Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter)

From the Libre website:

2. How frequently does the sensor capture and store glucose readings?
The sensor automatically measures glucose levels every minute and stores readings at 15 minute intervals for 8 hours. When the sensor is scanned by the reader, the sensor automatically transmits 8 hours of data to the reader.

So when you scan it you get the reading for the last minute, but the reader stores data points 15 minutes apart.

Topic: General Discussion / Attn Simon Fisher - RE: The DAFNE app

Hi Paul,

Glad to hear your finding the app useful... Do you mean that the planned exercise section is missing? How do you envisage this working?

Hi Dan,

Thanks for that - when we first developed the site we hadn't opened it up to our Australian cousins - I'll look at making the timezone detection more friendly for you guys Smile

You can indeed - go to the settings tab in the app, enter your username and password and set Diary Upload to On, whenever you save an entry it will automatically upload to the site. You can download entries from the site to the app by swiping down in the Diary tab (like you do to check for new emails)

Topic: General Discussion / 15 Years of DAFNE

2017 will mark 15 years since the DAFNE course was first rolled out. Lead Educator Sally Woolgar has asked us all for help in publicising this significant event.

Firstly, if anyone works in the media and would be willing to collaborate with us to work up an awareness/publicity campaign then please get in touch with Sally directly via email.

Secondly, if there are any members who would be willing to contribute stories on
1. how DAFNE has helped them manage a particular situation – e.g. sport/work/pregnancy/illness/anything else
2. continues to help manage everyday life
3. the difference 5 days makes – life before and after DAFNE.
4. how DAFNE online helps e.g. the chat room/shared experiences and support

Our idea is to compile a portfolio of peoples stories and information about the programme that can be sent to media outlets newspapers, magazines etc. to try and get as many stories in the media as we can. The greater variety of stories we have the better, short or long. Sometimes we think we are not extra ordinary enough to interest others but that isn’t the case, people are interested in other people, not really in dry research data. I would also like to share the stories across the educator networks, the NHS can be a difficult place to work, we all need some good news to remind us why we do what we do.

Please share your stories here or directly by emailing them to Sally

Hi Annette,

You are correct, this is a problem I discovered yesterday and will be working on fixing. You entries are being stored the diary view just doesn't refresh to show this. You can get them to display by going to your diary settings and changing your day end, then going to the diary page and they should be there. Note they only don't appear if you enter entries using the home page, entries from the diary tab itself should display.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

As far as I can see there is no subscription available, they have probably thought it may be a good idea for the future but won't get round to doing it. Regarding VAT during the checkout process you tick a box to certify that you are VAT exempt for the sensors and it is automatically taken off. Although the sensor limit is 2 per order I must say delivery has been pretty fast when I do order them.

Topic: General Discussion / Health App Challenge

Plymouth Univeristy are currently running a health app challenge focused on young people creating apps for diabetes. They'd like to get feedback on the developed apps and if you submit a review you're entered in a prize draw for £200! If you'd like to help out young people with diabetes then head on over to http://www.diabetesappchallenge.org.uk and review the apps marked with the black stars (and say something nice about our own app whilst you're there too Very Happy )

I'd also recommend reading a book called Your Diabetes Science Experiment by Ginger Viera. I'm in the same boat, trying to lose weight and it gives a great overview of how carbs, protein and fat affect your BG, as well as detailed guidelines for exercise too.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Can a ipad app talk to the iPhone?

Hi Fudge,

The apps on two different devices won't sync like calendar and contacts as they don't use iCloud; however if you add in your DAFNE online username and password to the app settings tab, and set diary upload to on, the app will then upload your new entries to the website. From your other device you can then swipe down on the diary tab (as if you were checking for new email) to download your entries from the site.

Hope this makes sense, let me know if you'd like any further help.

"Spoon" is a bit of a typo. If you open up the App Store there should be an update available for the app (we are now on 2.1.7). Please note that you need iOS 8 to download the latest releases of the app due to it using new features in iOS 8.

I don't suppose anyone has gone through airport security with a Libre yet??

I was having a general conversation about airports with someone and suddenly wondered what they would make of the sensor?!

If nobody else reports before August I shall find out myself :-)

I visited New York in November and coming through security in Manchester I had my libre sensor on, I didn't even beep as I went through the scanner. My sensor had run out by the time I was coming back the other wat so can't comment on US Airport security, but I was fine in the UK.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / How to upload diary from app to website

Hi Catsalice,

If you have Diary Upload turned on in the settings and have put the right username and password in then the app will automatically upload new entries when you save them, you don't need to do anything else.

Thanks,

Simon

If you take a look at the settings page which version of the app are you using? I thought we'd fixed this in a recent update but maybe not...

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / iPhone 6

Hi,

Thanks for bringing this to my attention and apologies for the inconvenience. The reason for changing the way you enter BG, QA, BI and CP was to use Apple system keyboards rather than the custom one I created for earlier versions of the app. This is because by using system keyboards they will handle rotation of the device and different screen sizes a bit nicely.

I'm currently out of the country with the day job but will take a look at fixing the issues when I get back at the weekend.

If you're having issues with the QA calc could you email me with what you entered, what you expect to see and what was actually calculated so I can try and reproduce this. [email protected]

Once again, apologies for the inconvenience.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / iOS 8 health integration

Hi,

An update to the app (now version 2.1.1) will be hitting the App Store later today. With this update I've added in the Apple Health integration for Blood Glucose and Carbohydrates. For carbs it will take your CP intake when you save an entry and multiply by 10 to get the carb intake in grams. For the Blood Glucose these are saved in mmol/l however whilst they are currently being saved into Health they are not visible due to Apple removing this facility in a recent update. They will be fixing this soon so that you can see your Glucose in the Health app. For more info on this issue see here

As always feedback is encouraged - you can post on the forums or get in touch with me via email

Welcome to the forum! Yes indeed there is, it's just a matter of time unfortunately. What did the other app do which you'd like ours to do as well?

Thanks,

Thanks, you can call me Simon F though Very Happy

I'm pleased to see that Abbot have now fixed the VAT removal on their website; when you add an item to the basket and specify that you are eligible for VAT relief then the price will be the VAT excluded one. They also seem to have realised that £10 for delivery was a bit steep and this is now reduced to £5. Still nothing on subscriptions though.

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter)

I too have been privileged enough to have a 14 day go of the new Freestyle Libre system so thought I'd add in my 2p worth...

In terms of functionality, Mark is spot on. It gives you a chart plotted against your target range of interstitial glucose readings. The time lag between blood and interstitial readings is around 20 minutes and I believe that this is accurate having used the meter over the past 2 weeks. I was a bit concerned before using it as I'd been warned about the meter being way off with glucose measurements however am pleased to say I did some finger prick tests to verify the readings I was getting and they were largely the same.

In terms of the sensor, applying it to my upper arm was painless and it's very easy to forget it's there (I too have knocked it on more than one occasion). It's also been showerproof, and I've been doing some fairly vigorous circuit training over the past couple of weeks and am pleased to say the sensor stayed attached despite copious amounts of sweat production on my part.

Having the ability to see the trend leading up to your current glucose reading is really useful and I found it helped me more accurately judge my insulin requirements (e.g. I wouldn't correct as much if I was high but on the way down) and avoid hypos.

In terms of convenience it is so much easier to swipe the sensor with the meter rather than load a strip, prick my finger, apply the blood to the strip and clean the blood after. As my confidence in the sensors readings grew I needed to do finger prick tests less and less.

I also particularly liked the fact that the meter isn't continuously monitoring; a few months ago I tried the Navigator CGM system and got really annoyed when the meter woke me up a few times during the night telling me that I was headed for a hypo when that was nowhere near the case. That said I do have good hypo awareness so perhaps a true CGM would be of benefit to those who don't have good hypo awareness.

In terms of the meter it is well built, and the chart and logbook functions are as you'd expect. One annoyance for me was the fact that you could only add food/insulin notes to the reading you've just scanned - you couldn't add them in to earlier readings or points in time. Pretty useless if you're in a hurry.

I've not yet had a chance to try the software but will give that a go and let you know my thoughts when I do.

One major sticking point that to run this will be prohibitively expensive for a large amount of people. As Peter rightly says, the annual running cost without VAT is around £1300, which in comparison to the annual cost of finger prick testing £0 is a massive difference. I'm no expert in manufacturing however would guess that the sensors only cost a tiny fraction of their retail cost to produce. Given that these meters and sensors could greatly improve the management of a persons diabetes, I'd perhaps naively hope that Abbot would make this more affordable to the end user.

Which brings me on to Abbot and their website - it is pretty shocking. There is promise of training however none is there. Subscriptions are mentioned but after an email exchange with them it seems they are not available yet with no timeframe or details of discounts. The shopping cart system asks if you are eligible for VAT relief and then doesn't apply it, instead charging you full price. It all just seems a bit cobbled together. Which would be almost excusable if they weren't wanting you to pay £1300 a year to use the system. They seriously need to sort these issues out before I will have confidence in their ability to deliver.

So, in summary... This is fantastic technology. I've only been diabetic for 8 years so have missed out on the urine tests of yore but still feel that this is so much more advanced than finger prick testing. I really believe that it could improve my quality of life and management of diabetes, and would love to use thus system full time. The two major sticking points for me are the unjustifiably high cost for the end user, and poor website Abbot have created to sell this. That said, if you do get the chance to ha e a go, I would say go for it - experience the future!

Topic: Site Development / DAFNE Online iPhone application - help with content/design needed

Hi Linda,

It sounds like you haven't updated your iPhone for a while, and the app requires some of the latest apple updates to run. You can update to the latest version of iOS by following the instructions here https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623

Thanks,

Simon
