Topic: General Discussion / Dosage auto-calculation in apps

Hi April,

I'm afraid not in the short term - this is EU law which we have to fall in line with (or risk the consequences). Longer term we are looking at getting the app certified but we need a company to help us do this and so far it seems the NHS aren't willing to help.

Topic: Site Development / Formatting url BBcode is broken

I've just tested above and it seems to be working OK - can you try and use it in a post on this thread and I'll see where the code is messing up. Note you have to add in the the http:// on the URL.

Thanks Richard, it's good to hear a bit of positivity after all the negative reviews/comments we have had. I'm glad it's managed to help you maintain better control of your diabetes.

Topic: General Discussion / Dosage auto-calculation in apps

Hi Rich,

We have brought this to the attention of DAFNE in the UK however I'm not too hopeful of help with the certification as we aren't NHS employees and they have always maintained that DAFNE Online and DAFNE are separate entities. I can't speak for DAFNE in other countries but I have a feeling it may be the same.

I've been reliably informed it would be upwards of £3000 for certification, potentially nearer £10k Shocked

Topic: General Discussion / Dosage auto-calculation in apps

Hi Firstrunner,

I'm not sure if you have read the rest of the thread but the whole reason for removing the calculation was forced by the UK and European governments, and was completely out of our hands.

A lot of people have discussed taking on the MHRA or starting a Kickstarter fund to get the app certified as a medical device. So far nobody has stepped up to help.

Topic: Site Development / Problems with Mozilla Firefox

Hi Derek,

I've had a look at our log files and it does seem like your connection is being interrupted - it's not storing the fact that you're logged in properly on your browser. Can you try doing the steps in this page to see if that helps? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1024256

Which version of Firefox are you using? On Windows or Mac, and finally is this at work or home?

Thanks,

Topic: General Discussion / Problems with my diary

Hi Derek,

Sorry about this we're just ironing out some issues with an upgrade to the site software - are you saying that the diary above displays OK, but when you look at it through the tools menu then it's incorrect?

If possible could you send a screenshot to [email protected]

Thanks,

Simon

Topic: General Discussion / Dosage auto-calculation in apps

Hi Bejt1,

Although the dosage calculation was useful I agree, to say that DAFNEOnline is of little use now is a bit unfair, we still have the Diary, Charts, Carb counter, Handbook and Forums which have proved useful to a lot of people over the past 7 years.

Secondly, Mark and I run this site and apps in our spare time, we both have jobs, families, lives etc. we devote a significant chunk of that time to develop and support the site with little incentive save to support our fellow DAFNE graduates. Taking on the MHRA would take up a significant further amount of time and I'd rather focus on making the site run smoothly. If you or anyone else would like to start a campaign or take on the MHRA then I for one would be happy to support you with the technical expertise and DAFNE Online knowledge required. You can contact me directly via site message or [email protected] and we can figure out how to get it started.

Topic: General Discussion / Dosage auto-calculation in apps

Hi Graeme,

Unfortunately not, there is no way to go backwards with mobile apps. Sorry about that.

Thanks to all who have been understanding about this issue, it really helps in spite of the fact that others have been less supportive and some even abusive on the App Store reviews.

Topic: General Discussion / Dosage auto-calculation in apps

I agree with all of the above comments, we are severely disappointed too as all we are in it for is to help people who've done the DAFNE course, as we have. The MHRA is the regulatory body but it is the European Commission who sets this rule for all of Europe. Anything which performs a calculation must be labelled as a medical device and suitably certified. Penalties can be hard for non-compliance and as much as I love working on DAFNE Online I'm not willing to pay a massive fine/go to prison (I'm sure you'll understand).

John as you rightly say both Keith, Mark and I are UK based so are subject to the EC and UK law. Unfortunately there is no way to go back to a previous version (if there was I would have had to remove them from the app store as I'd still be non-compliant in the eyes of the MHRA).

If anyone knows of anybody who can help with the certification process please do let us know, as we would really like to get this feature back in.

If you want to get in touch with the MHRA then the gentleman who has been in touch with us is Leo Syron and he has said that I can share his information here: [email protected]

Topic: General Discussion / Dosage auto-calculation in apps

Unfortunately we will have to remove the auto-calculation of insulin dosage from the iOS and Android apps in the next update. By including a calculation function it means the app is classed as a "medical device" and as such needs to be regulated by the MHRA. This involves a long and expensive certification process (thousands of pounds) which as DAFNE Online is done in our spare time as DAFNE graduates is something we simply cannot afford to do. We were approached by the MHRA who in no uncertain terms told us to either remove the apps from sale or get them certified; we did however manage to agree with them that by removing the calculation function from the apps then it would declassify them as medical devices so the rest of the functions can remain and they can stay on sale in the app stores.

I know this was a useful feature for many of you, so I apologise that it will be disappearing from the apps. We will work with the NHS DAFNE team to see what is possible regarding certification, but in the short term we needed to get the apps back under compliance to allow them to continue to be available for DAFNE Graduates.
