Topic: General Discussion / Access to courses. Vic,The answer to this is not currently, however one of the reasons for having the DAFNE User Group ( DUG) and electing the DAFNE User Action Group (DUAG) is to try to do something about this. There is a forum on this site dedicated to the DUAG/DUG where you can find more information. You should have been given a form to join the DUG when you did your DAFNE course, ideally we would like more people to fill in these forms and join. All the info about the DUAG and DUG is in the forum, but basically its the 'user' part of the DAFNE programme that will help influence the future of DAFNE and promote DAFNE both to Diabetics and Primary Care Trusts ( who fund the DAFNE course). It is by 'pressuring' PCT's to run DAFNE that we can increase the opportunity of all Diabetics to benefit from the course. |

Topic: Questions ? / GLUCOPHAGE Hi i have been prescribed these Metformin tablets, and was told i should increase the dose up to 4 tablets a day. These are supposed to decrease my appertite, and make me more sensative to insulin, so i should be able to reduce the amount of insulin i take per injection. However nothing seems to be happening, have you any suggestions for me? should i carry on, or should i finish with them. |

Topic: General Discussion / Access to courses. Hi,Please forgive me if this is an old topic, as I am new to this site today. Having recently been fortunate enough to be offered a place on a DAFNE couse, my question is, is there anyway that someone who lives in an area which doesn't run courses, access a Dafne course? My daughter, who is 29 years old, has been admitted to hospital with DKA on three occasions and is also keen to start a family. I feel that she would benefit enormously from attending a course but there are no plans in her area. Regards. Vic. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Cherries I have just finished my 2nd Dafne course and can confirm that you don't inject for them - although I guess if you eat a whole punnet you might want to reconsider that. |

Topic: General Discussion / Help Hi, Im quite new to Dafne. I have been diabetic since I was 14 and I am now 24. At the start of being diagnosed I was sleeping a lot and also my sugars were up and down like a yo yo, therefore you have the mood swings and the sugar cravings when low. Its only now that I have started to look after myself more and eat more healthily. At the start you kind of feel everyone is watching what you eat and telling you what to do, like you don't have control but now I see that everyone should eat like a diabetic and I feel a lot better for it.You should be getting support from the Gp. Sometimes it takes a kick up the bum so to speak, or he will just come to terms with it and see that its not that bad. Just keep with it Megan |

Topic: General Discussion / Help HiWas wondering if anyone could help, although I am not actually a sufferer of Diabetes my husband is. He recently got diagnosed with Type I and to tell you the truth I don't know who he is anymore. He thinks he can carry on as if nothing has changed. His Doctor is not helpful and the support team are not supporting him at all. All he seems to want to do is sleep, he can't get levels correct, and can be very argumentative and lazy. I am finding it very hard to live with him as I don't know what type of mood he is going to be in, I cannot even begin to imagine what he must be going through but I do feel he is not helping himself with what he eats (craves chocolate all the time). He goes without his Green Insulin pen for weeks on end and says he forgets to take the orange one. If he does take it its before food and he has been told to take it with food. He has also been smoking heavily, and doesn't seem to care what anyone else says. I am at my wits end, and I don't know what to do anymore, can anyone help? Thank you |

Topic: Site Development / Deleting Multiple Diary Entries Hi Simon..I can support MarkW on this, as a result of using the BG summary report & digging down during a post Xmas/EOY review, I found quite a few data entry errors I had made which needed to be deleted/corrected. Typically these were date errors (1 day out) causing 10 entries to be allocated to a single day although entered on 2 separate occasions. Also simple entry of BI value in QA box etc You may feel I've just got thick fingers but I wondered if a Consistency Report could be produced which would advise apparently odd data values as an adjunct (say) to the Summary report or maybe better immediately with the entry errors . The user could chose/flag to ignore or correct if necessary. There are lots of checks which could be made to highlight major oddities rather than normal variation but perhaps some are: -Date entered is already on file -Date missing from sequence already on file -QA is much higher than usual (say 200% avg) at that time of day -Usual BI entry missing No doubt other users can add more checks if you think the report is a possibility. Let us know what you think. Thanks, John |

Topic: General Discussion / Forever chasing my tail - Any suggestions please Hi Liz,Glad you seem to have sorted out your BIs now it must make you feel better to be getting in control now. I did let things go a little at Christmas - not as much as I usually do - don't think I have ever worked out the CP on the Christmas pudding packaging before!! But the DAFNE principles did seem to work even when I was indulging in things I haven't eaten for quite some time. My main downfall was the tin of Hero's. Once the lid is off it is easy to eat more than you meant to but hey its only Christmas once a year and the kids have managed to finish them off now so temptation has been taken away! How was your Christmas? Good luck in getting things sorted. Karen x |

Topic: General Discussion / Weight wanted Can anyone tell me how to put on weight without sending my blood sugars into silly land ?I know from being diabetic for nearly 20 years that when I weigh between 9 and 9 1/2 stone I have test results that are, while not perfect, much more as they should be. I have not had a hypo for several weeks, and my last HbAic was 7.7 Since the middle of December I have maintained a steady weight of 8 1/2 stone.(Yes, this does include over the Christmas period in which I pretty well sat around and pigged out constantly). I shall, as soon as the snow has gone, be resuming a horrible part time job I have delivering menus round the locality, which I know will result in a weight loss of about 1 stone (based on having done this many times over the last 5 years). This means by the end of February I expect to be about 2 stone less than I want. I already eat loads, toast/cereal about 1 hour after I get up, a reasonable lunch and have a full cooked dinner every evening, have home made cake at least 5 times a week, and supper consisting of a sandwich (or more) every night. |

Topic: General Discussion / Forever chasing my tail - Any suggestions please Hi Karen, Happy New Year to you too. Thanks for checking in. I haven't totally cracked it yet but I think my BI's are pretty settled now. And I'm working on adjusting the QAs according to whatever it is that makes them change cyclically. How are you doing? Did you manage to get through Christmas and New Year with a healthy average or did you just throw caution to the wind?! Liz |

Topic: General Discussion / Need a kick up the backside! :( Wow, look at all those greens!!! I'm impressed - if you carry on with readings like that I am sure that your next Hba1c will reduce dramatically.I would suggest carrying on with what you are doing at the moment because it is definately working. Life you said even the reds are below 10 so this is excellent! Well done Derek and keep up the good work. Karen x |

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise and diabetic control Hi SheilaAny excercise is good for you. I personaly stick to the rules. I go to the gym 4 times a week and each workout takes just over 2 hours intensive training. I found the more I worked out the better my matabulism became and the less basal insulin I needed as Im on an insulin pump. For the hours I work out plus the hour before I drop this down by 50% and also eat 10 grams of carbs. I hope you continue to work out and enjoy the improvement in quality of life you will get from it. Barry |
