Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE strapline poll

We've just modified the poll to allow you to vote for the original one being kept. Also, you don't have to use all four ranks now, so if you only had 2 favourites you could use ranks 1 and 2 (you can't have duplicates though).

Hope this helps!

I prefer the original strapline but it seems impossible to vote for this as you have to give your number preference for the other suggestions thereby voting for something you don't want

Hi,
May I recommend you read the online handbook that gives you the answer here . You don't really need a HCP just a better memory ;-)

Topic: General Discussion / Coeliac as well as Diabetic?

Hello Andrea, I have found that the effects of insulin are sometimes hard to predict. I seem to go on OK for a couple of weeks with good tests, and then it changes and has to all be adjusted again. I also frequently find that there is a sort of "knock on" or delayed effect so that if I am unusually active in the afternoon, then I will not be low until the evening, or if I do a heavy day's exercise my tests will be still low for a day or two after. But I have had diabetes for a long time and the dafne nurse said that in that case insulins can take longer to take effect. It was once suggested at the clinic that there may be an erratic absorbtion of food from the gut with coeliac which could possibly account for it (though I'm not sure about this myself). What do you find? - Janys

Topic: General Discussion / Coeliac as well as Diabetic?

Hi! I am a fresh 'dafne graduate' and also have coeliacs (and under active thyroid), it is so nice to know there are others in the same boat. Have found the whole DAFNE course fantastic, met a great group of people and learned SO much. The only thing I have found is that my diabetes appears to act slightly differently to other type 1's, has anyone else found this? Cheers for now. Andrea

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Red Wine/Tonic Wine

carbohydrates no, sugar mmm maybe. There are 1000's of Red Wines all are different, generally I find Red wines lower my BG however not
all do. Part of the problem is wine bottles never list any additives on them and you never quite know whats in them. The only real answer is to experiment and only drink those that don't raise your BG's. Look on the bright side they are good for your heart even if they raise your BG a bit ;-)

Guys,
Can I suggest you post your email addresses to each other via our private message facility i.e the message inbox in the left hand menu on every page. Posting your email address on a public forum is not a good idea since spammers scan ALL websites for email addresses to send spam to. I don't want us to be responsible for your email boxes filling up with spam.

Sorry to be paranoid but there are bad people out on the net you know....

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Red Wine/Tonic Wine

On the course we were told that there are no carbohydrates in red wine or tonic wine.

Yet my sugars go up when drinking these drinks..

Anyone got any insight.....

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Glucotabs: Where they can be found?

The medical shop have just started stocking a key ring that has a container which holds 4 glucotabs. Received an e-mail from them the other day and have ordered a couple to try. The 10 tablet tubes are great but I think this key chain idea will be a wonderful alternative. I always have keys on me but seem to spend ages trying to locate a 10 tablet tube at times before i leave the house!

Unfortunately shazz, it would appear not. Not to worry though, I have made a few adjustments, which, hopefully will help reduce the amount of hypo's.

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE strapline poll

Hi Lizzie, currently not as we wanted to avoid people entering all 1's for the rankings so that the 1-4 ranking system was enforced and we got meaningful results. If you really don't want to vote we'll add a row to the results we send to DAFNE Central stating that you would like to keep the original.

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE strapline poll

Sorry, I am probably being thick, but I tried filling in the box suggesting keeping the old slogan but then it told me there were duplicate ratings, probably because I did not change the numbers in the boxes of the other choices and left them all as 1. But I don't particularly like the other options and don't want to give a false number for them. Is there any way of only filling in the box and not having to rank the other options?

Topic: General Discussion / Restaurants with carbohydrate info

My phone does have internet access but it is not a smartphone or iphone thing, so a lot of regular internet pages designed for computer screens, such as restaurant websites, are too large for it to load. The DAFNE site is fine because it is desgined for mobiles, but like I say it cannot always manange to convert a normal site to a size possible to view on its screen.

Restaurant carb info is a bugbear of mine, especially places like Eat or Pret which are so trendy with their minimalist packaging covered in boasts about the name of the farms where each separate ingredient was picked and harvested, pictures of the farmers and their familes, etc, that there is no room for something which might be of actual use like nutritional information. I wrote to Eat about this and this is the reply I got:

"The decision we have taken to limit the information on our packaging is to keep the image in line with our brand standards of being simple & uncomplicated. To this end we only cover the ingredients, and essential allergens information. I have however passed your comments & suggestions on to our food development team, who are charged with menu construction & product development. They are always more than happy to receive feedback from our customers as they strive to help EAT. do things better."

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Weight gain since starting DAFNE

Hi there Christine

I too have put on weight since the DAFNE course at the beginning of December 2009. I have no idea why as I'm eating less than before DAFNE - it's a hassle giving injections between meals! However, I'm very pleased with my control and although nothing is perfect at least I understand now why results go up and down and what to do about it.

Best wishes, Gill
