Topic: General Discussion / Coeliac as well as Diabetic? Hello to you all, I must just say that I have found Genius bread (fresh in daily at Tesco) has made a big difference. Although it is quite expensive, it's much more like normal bread than the rest and not at all like the usual cardboard, and easy to get hold of so makes life seem more normal.I have also found that doing DAFNE has helped such a lot, because it's given me more flexibility with meals, being able to miss a meal or have less carbs. I used to get in a terrible state trying to find enough carbs that were gluten free in restuarants, when out etc. I'd be interested to hear any experiences of gluten free when travelling abroad. (I've heard Italy is good as they have a lot of coeliac). I can vouch for West Wales where lots of people have it and they treat you very well. Wishing you all well, Janys |

Dear Sandra, I have had type 1 Diabetes for 28 yrs and I was diagnosed Coeliac 3 years ago at Manchester Royal Hospital . I have adjusted well to my Gluten free diet . The main drawback with the food especially in the "free from" sections in the supermarkets are as well as being Gluten free the foods are also wheat /soya/milk free making them virtualy tasteless For the prices not worth the money . If you like cereals as I do , Sainsburys cornflakes ,rice crispies ,are suitable for Coeliacs ,and being Diabetic /medically exempt able to get all my bread (Glutafin sliced bread ) , biscuits etc free on my monthly prescription from my GP .I have just done the D.A.F.N.E. course and found it very rewarding I now feel less worried about other people having to take care of me with hypos etc The course has given me the confidance to take control of my Diabetes hopefully to give me a better quality of life from now on .The very best of luck to you for the future |

Topic: General Discussion / Access to courses. I live in Milton Keynes which does not run DAFNE courses but my GP along with a group of others persuaded the PCT to fund patients who wanted to do a DAFNE course in Northampton. The theory is that if they have to fund enough people 'they'll see the light' and start thinking about running the courses in MK. So it really is worth keeping the pressure on. |

Topic: General Discussion / What meter are you using? Hello,As some of you know, I've been having a go at writing software to get the readings from our meters and upload them to our online diaries with a few clicks. Be interesting to know whats the most popular meter, and if I'm targeting my efforts at the ones which will be of most benefit. I'd appreciate if you could leave a reply with the make and model of the meter you are using. Thanks, NiVZ |

Topic: General Discussion / Help Hi JamBenJak,Everything that you say sounds so typical of the feelings one experiences from time to time as a diabetic. Difficult indeed to live with or understand. Sometimes we truly are not aware of the suffering we are causing during the mood swings. I have been Type 1 for 30 years and struggle to get anywhere near correct levels, my daughter Type 1 for 16 years and she suffers worse than me, we try but it's difficult. I don't have any answers for you but your husband needs to be made aware that it is his choice, he has a condition which isn't going to go away and he needs to choose how he wants to deal with it. When diagnosed, my specialist said "you are going to inject yourself twice a day for the rest of your life", I told him "no way" so he said "ok then die". I wonder what age your husband is and whether you have any children? He and you both need help and support, it seems as if he is struggling to accept the fact that he will need to change but it does get easier. Cant tell you that the mood swings will go though, depression is never far away. Please go to your diabetic team at the hospital and ask for their help, GP's are often too busy. Stick in there, you are obviously desperate to keep things together otherwise you wouldn't come on here asking for help. It's not an easy ride but has to be worth it. Good luck. Vic. |

Topic: Site Development / Meter Upload Development Hello,Just a quick update. With Mark and Simon's help we've now got it readng date/time, BG and comment (before/after meal) from the UltraSmart :-) It's very rough and ready just now, but at least it's getting the data in a suitable format now. I've also made the program more 'modular' with the hope it will make it easy to add other meters in the future. NiVZ |

Topic: General Discussion / Morning glucose rises Hi PWelcome to the site! I experienced what you are going through and still do but not as bad as it was a few months ago, read the posts in the General Forum "dawn phenomenon" you may find the answer/support there to give you an idea of what you can do but before you make any changes seek advice from your DAFNE educators and be recording your results religiously as that is the key to helping you too. Have a read and keep in touch Sam |

Topic: General Discussion / Morning glucose rises Hi everyone -I'm really new to this site and haven't had a chance to list all my readings as yet but I seem to be geting real high morning BG. Sometimes as high as 22! I've done tests throughout the night and things are fine - it just seems to surge out of control about 5 or 6 am as if there's been a glucose surge before I wake. Anyone else had this problem and how do I deal with it? Any help much appreciated! Pinkie |

Topic: General Discussion / Access to courses. Vic,The answer to this is not currently, however one of the reasons for having the DAFNE User Group ( DUG) and electing the DAFNE User Action Group (DUAG) is to try to do something about this. There is a forum on this site dedicated to the DUAG/DUG where you can find more information. You should have been given a form to join the DUG when you did your DAFNE course, ideally we would like more people to fill in these forms and join. All the info about the DUAG and DUG is in the forum, but basically its the 'user' part of the DAFNE programme that will help influence the future of DAFNE and promote DAFNE both to Diabetics and Primary Care Trusts ( who fund the DAFNE course). It is by 'pressuring' PCT's to run DAFNE that we can increase the opportunity of all Diabetics to benefit from the course. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / GLUCOPHAGE Hi i have been prescribed these Metformin tablets, and was told i should increase the dose up to 4 tablets a day. These are supposed to decrease my appertite, and make me more sensative to insulin, so i should be able to reduce the amount of insulin i take per injection. However nothing seems to be happening, have you any suggestions for me? should i carry on, or should i finish with them. |

Topic: General Discussion / Access to courses. Hi,Please forgive me if this is an old topic, as I am new to this site today. Having recently been fortunate enough to be offered a place on a DAFNE couse, my question is, is there anyway that someone who lives in an area which doesn't run courses, access a Dafne course? My daughter, who is 29 years old, has been admitted to hospital with DKA on three occasions and is also keen to start a family. I feel that she would benefit enormously from attending a course but there are no plans in her area. Regards. Vic. |
