Hi Shaun and Janys, well it seems we are few and far between, being Coeliac and Diabetic! I know of one other person whom i met on Facebook. I have sent e-mails to you both and look forward to chatting to you.

Dear Sandra, I have had type 1 Diabetes for 28 yrs and I was diagnosed Coeliac 3 years ago at Manchester Royal Hospital . I have adjusted well to my Gluten free diet . The main drawback with the food especially in the "free from" sections in the supermarkets are as well as being Gluten free the foods are also wheat /soya/milk free making them virtualy tasteless For the prices not worth the money . If you like cereals as I do , Sainsburys cornflakes ,rice crispies ,are suitable for Coeliacs ,and being Diabetic /medically exempt able to get all my bread (Glutafin sliced bread ) , biscuits etc free on my monthly prescription from my GP .I have just done the D.A.F.N.E. course and found it very rewarding I now feel less worried about other people having to take care of me with hypos etc The course has given me the confidance to take control of my Diabetes hopefully to give me a better quality of life from now on .The very best of luck to you for the future

Hello to you all, I must just say that I have found Genius bread (fresh in daily at Tesco) has made a big difference. Although it is quite expensive, it's much more like normal bread than the rest and not at all like the usual cardboard, and easy to get hold of so makes life seem more normal.
I have also found that doing DAFNE has helped such a lot, because it's given me more flexibility with meals, being able to miss a meal or have less carbs. I used to get in a terrible state trying to find enough carbs that were gluten free in restuarants, when out etc.
I'd be interested to hear any experiences of gluten free when travelling abroad. (I've heard Italy is good as they have a lot of coeliac). I can vouch for West Wales where lots of people have it and they treat you very well.
Wishing you all well, Janys

hi everyone! i agree with Janys, Genius bread is fab! I have been testing rolls from them, which are very tasty, they are going on sale this year don't know exact date yet, but it is just something great to have as opposed to just bread.
I don't get things on prescription as i don't eat enough pasta, bread to justify it, i didn't know i was Coeliac, but had almost given up bread as i had stomach pains, and would never have found out i had Coeliac until i was diagnosed Diabetic 4 years ago.
Still find it hard sometimes, i work for M&S and some of their new Simply Fuller Longer meals are gluten free and delicious!
Our wee group seems to be getting bigger, thank god as i was beginning to feel isolated.
Sixtall, welcome what is your name?
speak soon everyone

Hi! I am a fresh 'dafne graduate' and also have coeliacs (and under active thyroid), it is so nice to know there are others in the same boat. Have found the whole DAFNE course fantastic, met a great group of people and learned SO much. The only thing I have found is that my diabetes appears to act slightly differently to other type 1's, has anyone else found this? Cheers for now. Andrea

Hello Andrea, I have found that the effects of insulin are sometimes hard to predict. I seem to go on OK for a couple of weeks with good tests, and then it changes and has to all be adjusted again. I also frequently find that there is a sort of "knock on" or delayed effect so that if I am unusually active in the afternoon, then I will not be low until the evening, or if I do a heavy day's exercise my tests will be still low for a day or two after. But I have had diabetes for a long time and the dafne nurse said that in that case insulins can take longer to take effect. It was once suggested at the clinic that there may be an erratic absorbtion of food from the gut with coeliac which could possibly account for it (though I'm not sure about this myself). What do you find? - Janys

Hi Andrea, and welcome, i also have an underactive thyroid, which i think i am on the right dose of thyroxin now! Like you and Janys my BG's are all over the place as well good days and bad days! Recently at work my BG has been quite low but i haven't felt that they were, i usually can feel hypo-ish at about 6, one day i went down to 3 and felt fine! Got clinic in April i am going to mention it.
speak toy you all soon
