On Thursday (30th September) I went to my local Lloyd's chemist to pick up my prescription and they could only give me one pot of Aviva test strips - my prescription is for three pots. I went back today to pick up the rest of my prescription and was told that they had not come in - they said that Lloyd's were having trouble with their supplier and could not forecast when they would get any more. Has anybody else had this problem? |

Topic: General Discussion / Giving Blood Hi guys just came across your discussion about giving blood I think the reason the blood transfusion service don't allow type 1 s to donate blood is that if you reduced your circulating blood volume you would suddenly become more sensitive to the insulin you already have on board, making you more likely to hypo in the time after you donate! You would also probably require to reduce your insulin doses in the days following your donation! It's strictly for our own benefit!!!!! And of course there's a legal issue in case you donate blood then hypo in the street and come to some harm then sue them!!! X |

Topic: DUAG Committee / First draft of DUG letter There are a few minor formatting issues I would say, nothing to major. I would also ask them if there are any issues they would like to raise with us. i.e ask them to feedback to us any questions/problems with DAFNE or follow up meetings. Any interaction we can establish with the DUG will be benificial to both sides. I know that is just the first letter to them and we shouldn't necessarily be too ambitious, however encouraging questions would be a good thing I think. |

Topic: General Discussion / Giving Blood I think its pretty unlikely to be genes, since we don't really know what causes Type 1 for sure. They are not going to stop us because of that. Its more likely that its because we have to inject needles into ourselves all the time and needles are a primary source of infections/diseases. This is a bit unfair since we are hardly the same drug addicts, but thats life I guess. |

Topic: General Discussion / Giving Blood I believe the reason is that our BG at any time we give blood may be high or low. There may also be a possibility that there could be a gene in the blood that might cause somebody to develop diabetes, though I don't know, but i've always been told that I cannot give blood. |

Topic: General Discussion / Giving Blood ive always been told that the reason that we cant give blood is something to do with the fact that that we need to inject insulin and this might be take out of the body when giving blood. |

Topic: General Discussion / not good !! help Go Heather,When I read Kelly's post I was torn between what to say but you said it very well. The good thing is that you (Kelly) will feel (and look) better and the kids will have a happy, healthier Mum. I trust you get a lot of support at the hospital and can get back to some routine that helps you stay on the straight and narrow. I used to think my relationship with the diabetes was a war but I've come to realize that you can live with a truce. We all adjust differently and some have an easier time coming to terms with It than others. My thoughts are with you. Best wishes, Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / help with CP-QAs Karl, I beleive she is a DAFNE Graduate, but has yet to register as such. Some DAFNE centres are not very good at giving out the codes needed to sign-up as a graduate.Grandma Carol, if you contact your DAFNE Educator they should be able to give you a code so we can make your account a graduate account, that will avoid the confusion with other users and will give you access to the online course handbook. As Karl points out I think you are a bit quick to change your ratio, your BG's for monday look fine on a 2:1 ratio and one day doesn't really make a pattern to work from. On the tuesday you are a bit high still at 16:30 and so you might find the insulin did not have the effect it normally does. Many people find it harder to get their BG back down below 12 with the 'standard' 1 unit = 3 BG, it can be you need more when your BG's are higher. Unfortunatley everyone is different so there is no 'standard' answer. You need to take readings over several days before changing your ratios to make sure it is your ratio at fault and not a blip in your BG's ( which we can all get from time to time). |

Topic: General Discussion / help with CP-QAs Have you done the DAFNE Course ? It does not say graduate under your name. You should not change your ratios without a pattern, that's not one bad reading. if you have not please let us know , if you have reread the section on adjusting |

Topic: General Discussion / help with CP-QAs Also with these figures why are you changing your lunch ratio - 2:1 worked perfectly on Monday but not on Tuesday - no pattern there, could your CP's have been out. If you do change its .5 at a time. If it was me I would not change 2 meal ratios at the same time try to get 1 right first then sort the other. |

Topic: DAFNE Graduate Group (DGG) / ?elected? Why does this forum say that the DUG is an ELECTED group who meet to discuss? I thought that was DUAG? Any DAFNE graduate can be a member of the DUG can't they? |

Topic: General Discussion / help with CP-QAs Carol, Unsure if anybody can say that they know the best thing to do, as everybody reacts differently to changing ratios, etc. I would suggest that you change the ratio by a smaller margin. On the initial course I went on, we were advised to amend a ratio by 0.5 rather than 1.0, and that it would be best to adjust one ratio at a time, rather than changing two or more. From the readings above it looked that your first injection ratio was spot on as the lunch time BGs appear to be in range. Your first BG reading in the morning looks too high, and could be a result of either needing a higher BI or larger PM ratio. May be a need to do a test at 03:00 Hours to see if it is high or you are suffering a Hypo. Hope this helps. |

Topic: General Discussion / not good !! help Hi Kelly, I think that is great that you are going to 'spill the beans' to your nurse tomorrow. The fact that you are doing that, listening to people when they tell you that you look thin and ill, and that you are now not going to use your diabetes for weight loss again are all really positive and show that you are now helping yourself and getting on track to be healthy again. Once you are back to taking care of yourself and getting good blood sugar readings your body can start to try to repair itself and stop the progression of any damage that has already been done, your nurse will be able to advise you on this. Well done for coming to your senses and making the positive steps towards getting healthy, let us know how you get on. |
