Topic: General Discussion / Split background insulin

Even when you've changed insulin type and were already on a split dose before, it can be difficult to work out. Sad

Just this week I've changed from Lantus to Levemir in the hope that things will become more stable but it has been difficult. I've found that I needed a lot more than what I was taking for Lantus so I did start down the path of getting lots of ketones, but applying sick day rules thankfully got me out of it. Not something I needed considering I was still working out my new dose amounts but such is the nature of trial and error. Sad

Keep your chin up - you can work it out and definitely contact your specialist before it gets too much. Good luck Caroline!

Topic: General Discussion / Shortage of test strips

I had this problem usually when going to my local Lloyds. So in response to this, I started going to the 24 hour Boots pharmacy instead but I found that they were short of pen needles instead!

You can't win! XD

Topic: DUAG Committee / First draft of DUG letter

google docs is a possibilty but there are a few things to bear in mind. Firstly it is NOT secure and so no personal information should be stored on it. Its fine for generic letters or documents that do not contain any personal information but thats the limit to it. I'm also not sure how we can add references to docs from here to it. We each need an account and then to share the docs between those accounts. This is fine but I'm not sure about specific references to documents from here. Its worth trying since as Simon says it is easier for working on shared documents. We could just post here to say the doc has been updated instead of adding a reference to the doc in the post.
The only other issue I can think of is we are 2 weeks into the forum and only a small number of the DUAG have managed to find it, not sure how many will be able to manage google docs as well :-(

I have read Annette,s letter and found that the letter is just about right. I do not feel that it needs to be any longer, as people will not read a long letter.

The letter I read was posted on the 28th september. I do not seem to seem to be able to access the later addition.

Mark/Peter - on the handling of documents have you considered using Google Docs (documents.google.com) - you can version files and protect them there and Google has slightly more hosting space than us ;)

Topic: General Discussion / Giving Blood

I was told the same thing here in Australia. They would not accept my donation in case I had a hypo. A bit strange considering the Red Cross seems desperate for blood, but it's their right to refuse

tony, I have done a document, but its Brian and I that are supposed to be working on it and Brian is still on holiday. I think its only fair he gets chance to comment on it before I post it on here. I will do so as soon as Brian is back and has given his comments.

Peter, its a fair point but there are a couple of issues I need to work out before we can do this. Our web hosting for this site has a limited
amount of storage, I need to find a way to ensure that any uploading of documents could not overload the site. I'm sure people would not do this intentionally but they would not know when uploading what space is available. I therefore need to workout how to manage this. There is
also the issue that if we upload multiple revisions of the document then old posts refer to the old ones and they cannot remain on the server indefinately since we would definately run out of space that way. I am keen to provide a solution we just need to think it through properly. Therefore if we can email them to the list of now and I will let you know when I have an upload facility available.

Topic: Site Development / DAFNE Online iPhone application - help with content/design needed

Oh yes... I'd forgot last night after my rambling. I think the auto option would be better as well!
At first glance anyway as it seems the simpler option of the two. Thanks again Simon.

Same niggle as Dr Jez.  Apple's market research folk clearly didn't think I'd buy an ipod as I do it on most apps. Heheh.
To be honest I've only updated a couple of days ago so may well be teething problems on my part. Other than that the updates are ace. It's nice to see a couple of my own suggestions implemented. It's surprising how it's encouraged me to do a bit more testing and actually logging the results instead of just acting on a result and forgetting about it!
I've had another idea as well. I wonder if it would be possible to include a dosage calculator in the settings? I've just recently been varying my ratios and keep getting mixed up and even forgetting which ratios I'm on and at what points in the day. As is, the settings allow target BGs to be input for meal and bed times and it'd help me (and possibly others as forgetful as me) if I could also add ratios to each meal time. So then when I put in how many lines I'm going to have the app then says to take n units. Clearly any alterations or corrections would be done manually.
Once again my explanations are a bit muddled so I hope you can manage to decipher my late night ramblings!!!
Brilliant job Simon. Thanks again.

Mark, If we are going to post documents here, then we will need a means of making changes and uploading the newer version as Tony says. I guess there will be issues with controlling the amount of data stored on the server, as well as requiring more work from you. In the meantime I guess we email amended versions of the document?

Tony, Priority this weekend is the report on this week's Exec meeting. So will probably be next weekend before I get to my action from the DUAG meeting.

Any ideas? The pancakes look pretty insubstantial, but I've ended up quite high after underestimating their CP

Topic: DUAG Committee / Diabetes UK Volunteer conference Scotland - DUAG attendance?

In addition to the cost of the stand, we also need to know whether anyone is willing to volunteer to man the stand. It would probably need 2 of us and, unless those based locally are willing, would also involve accomodation as well as travel costs. Finally, having seen the reaction of the attendees at the DAFNE Collaborative, a joint DUAG/dafneonline stand is likely to be of much more interest than DUAG alone.

My view is that there would be quite alot of effort in organising this, and cost in attending. If the audience is expected to be ~130, would that be worthwhile? It would perhaps be better to try attending one of the other events that Mark mentions, picking one where the audience would be higher and we have a larger number of DUAG members living nearby to assist.

Topic: General Discussion / Shortage of test strips

On Thursday (30th September) I went to my local Lloyd's chemist to pick up my prescription and they could only give me one pot of Aviva test strips - my prescription is for three pots. I went back today to pick up the rest of my prescription and was told that they had not come in - they said that Lloyd's were having trouble with their supplier and could not forecast when they would get any more. Has anybody else had this problem?

Topic: General Discussion / Giving Blood

Hi guys just came across your discussion about giving blood I think the reason the blood transfusion service don't allow type 1 s to donate blood is that if you reduced your circulating blood volume you would suddenly become more sensitive to the insulin you already have on board, making you more likely to hypo in the time after you donate! You would also probably require to reduce your insulin doses in the days following your donation! It's strictly for our own benefit!!!!! And of course there's a legal issue in case you donate blood then hypo in the street and come to some harm then sue them!!! X

Topic: DUAG Committee / First draft of DUG letter

There are a few minor formatting issues I would say, nothing to major. I would also ask them if there are any issues they would like to raise with us. i.e ask them to feedback to us any questions/problems with DAFNE or follow up meetings. Any interaction we can establish with the DUG will be benificial to both sides. I know that is just the first letter to them and we shouldn't necessarily be too ambitious, however encouraging questions would be a good thing I think.

Hi Annette Looks good, I have added somethings in but am not sure if this has now taken the letter off target? What do you think? Still needs some tighter focus over first 3 paras. I have repeated a bit here.

Just found that my document is saved here on laptop and not posted in my reply, anyone (Mark, Annette how do I do this so everyone can see my changes to Annette's first draft?

Topic: General Discussion / Giving Blood

I think its pretty unlikely to be genes, since we don't really know what causes Type 1 for sure. They are not going to stop us because of that. Its more likely that its because we have to inject needles into ourselves all the time and needles are a primary source of infections/diseases. This is a bit unfair since we are hardly the same drug addicts, but thats life I guess.

I would prefer it to auto populate with the last Bl entry. Thanks for seeking the input!
