Topic: General Discussion / Do you have access to the Online Handbook?

Hi, I have entered a valid code but the handbook link still does not appear on the right hand side. Any thing else I need to do or is it just a case of waiting a day or two?
Thanks

Topic: General Discussion / Giving Blood

I believe the reason is that our BG at any time we give blood may be high or low. There may also be a possibility that there could be a gene in the blood that might cause somebody to develop diabetes, though I don't know, but i've always been told that I cannot give blood.

ive always been told that the reason that we cant give blood is something to do with the fact that that we need to inject insulin and this might be take out of the body when giving blood.

Topic: General Discussion / not good !! help

Go Heather,

When I read Kelly's post I was torn between what to say but you said it very well.

The good thing is that you (Kelly) will feel (and look) better and the kids will have a happy, healthier Mum. I trust you get a lot of support at the hospital and can get back to some routine that helps you stay on the straight and narrow. I used to think my relationship with the diabetes was a war but I've come to realize that you can live with a truce. We all adjust differently and some have an easier time coming to terms with It than others. My thoughts are with you. Best wishes, Helen

because it was created when the DUAG name did not exist and I have never noticed it and updated it since, a slap on the wrist for me ;-)

Topic: General Discussion / help with CP-QAs

Karl, I beleive she is a DAFNE Graduate, but has yet to register as such. Some DAFNE centres are not very good at giving out the codes needed to sign-up as a graduate.
Grandma Carol, if you contact your DAFNE Educator they should be able to give you a code so we can make your account a graduate account, that will avoid the confusion with other users and will give you access to the online course handbook. As Karl points out I think you are a bit quick to change your ratio, your BG's for monday look fine on a 2:1 ratio and one day doesn't really make a pattern to work from. On the tuesday you are a bit high still at 16:30 and so you might find the insulin did not have the effect it normally does. Many people find it harder to get their BG back down below 12 with the 'standard' 1 unit = 3 BG, it can be you need more when your BG's are higher. Unfortunatley everyone is different so there is no 'standard' answer. You need to take readings over several days before changing your ratios to make sure it is your ratio at fault and not a blip in your BG's ( which we can all get from time to time).

Have you done the DAFNE Course ? It does not say graduate under your name. You should not change your ratios without a pattern, that's not one bad reading. if you have not please let us know , if you have reread the section on adjusting

Also with these figures why are you changing your lunch ratio - 2:1 worked perfectly on Monday but not on Tuesday - no pattern there, could your CP's have been out. If you do change its .5 at a time. If it was me I would not change 2 meal ratios at the same time try to get 1 right first then sort the other.

Why does this forum say that the DUG is an ELECTED group who meet to discuss? I thought that was DUAG? Any DAFNE graduate can be a member of the DUG can't they?

Carol, Unsure if anybody can say that they know the best thing to do, as everybody reacts differently to changing ratios, etc. I would suggest that you change the ratio by a smaller margin.
On the initial course I went on, we were advised to amend a ratio by 0.5 rather than 1.0, and that it would be best to adjust one ratio at a time, rather than changing two or more. From the readings above it looked that your first injection ratio was spot on as the lunch time BGs appear to be in range.
Your first BG reading in the morning looks too high, and could be a result of either needing a higher BI or larger PM ratio. May be a need to do a test at 03:00 Hours to see if it is high or you are suffering a Hypo.

Hope this helps.

Topic: General Discussion / not good !! help

Hi Kelly, I think that is great that you are going to 'spill the beans' to your nurse tomorrow. The fact that you are doing that, listening to people when they tell you that you look thin and ill, and that you are now not going to use your diabetes for weight loss again are all really positive and show that you are now helping yourself and getting on track to be healthy again. Once you are back to taking care of yourself and getting good blood sugar readings your body can start to try to repair itself and stop the progression of any damage that has already been done, your nurse will be able to advise you on this. Well done for coming to your senses and making the positive steps towards getting healthy, let us know how you get on.

Autopopulate for me too I think.
Also wondered (minor sausage thumb niggle) if there was a way of making it harder to inadvertantly hit the home button when tapping the decimal point on the excellent QI/BI number keypad?

I do find this a little strange as to why we cannot give blood. Is our blood any different then?

Auto populate gets my vote - they if you have adjusted - you don't have to remember to change the default - one other bug not sure if it was there before or a new one - if you press the + for a new diary entry then the cancel it still does an entry

A question for you guys - how do you want the app to populate the BI value? There's a couple of ways that I can think of:

1. Add a field to each of the entry types in the target page, allowing you to specify the default BI for that time of day
2. The app can automatically look up your last used BI for that entry type and populate the field with that

Any thoughts on the above options?

The latest version of the app (1.1.1) is now on the app store, fixing some of the above bugs. This new version:
  • Added the ability to specify when you go to bed, so that bedtime entries will appear in the correct diary day.
  • Also fixed the following two bugs:
  • Users couldn't view the last entries in the list of diary entry types
  • The app would crash if the user tried to delete the first row in the diary view (link to summary).
Let us know if you find any problems with it. Also if you do like the app, please remember to rate it on the app store!

Topic: General Discussion / Split background insulin

hi, I just wanted to add that I had the same problem when I was on Lantus. The hospital advised me to have lunch and then eat no cps for the next 5 hours(if your on novorapid) and then check your sugars. Check them an hour later still without eating any cps to check what's happening when your QA has ran out and if they've risen you need to split your longacting insulin as it's not being effective at controlling your fasting sugars. I had to do that twice just to confirm that it was definately running out in the evening. I just wanted to suggest it so you'll be able to show it to your dafne team at your checkup.
