Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Looking for some comments on my diary I would suggest you need more BI in the morning.......eg. Wednesday 4th, nothing to eat all afternoon, so no QA or CPs in the system yet you still went high. You also commented on another time this happened, namely Saturday 7th. To me, that warrants carb free basal testing during the day, and you could probably bump on 2 units straight away and then test......Thursday at 23:59 you had 1+1 CPs, why did you not take QA for this....? This may explain the high morning on Friday. I suspect the PM BI dose is pretty much correct, but it wouldn't hurt to get some 3 am tests to make sure with no carbs at all before bed...which it seems you like to have, what nibbles do you have a night........ You can also expect your ratios to dramatically change once you have got the right BI dose, you may be resistant but you should be able to get them down to below 5:1..............your lows throughout the day I believe are down to too much QA, but this because your BI is off, so getting the insulin/carb ratios right is not easy, if possible.......... Also, once you are happy your AM BI is holding you steady, experimentation with the time of your PM BI dose can start, I see you take it quite late, this is helpful in combating the Dawn Phenomenon, but it does mean you can suffer later in the evening as your AM dose starts to die off.......... |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Looking for some comments on my diary Hi here is my diary for the past 7 days.I would like to know what your opinion is. To me it looks like the night BI is only lasting 8 hrs as on nights when I have had less than 8 hrs in bed, which is not many, the morning BS is ok and the ones with 9 or more I am high. I would like to add I am not sleeping all that time, I go to bed and read for over an hour, plus I have sleep apnea which is brutal cos I don't feel anything from my cpap treatment, but that's another story. Since completing dafne and being encouraged to eat more carbs and the big increase in insulin I have put on 5 pounds!! Not a happy chappy. All the best Derek |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Chicken soup That is a strange one, have you got results on paper that actually confirm the soup being eaten and the following days results high.........The amount of carbs in the soup is not that much so I cant understand how the carbs alone could be responsible............ What are your results like when you dont have anything or something other than soup or a sandwich and what time are you having these......? Your ratio at this time might be out and the sandwich and its filling may be slowing the digestion/glucose release giving you a top up later on.........as opposed to the soup which is in an out fairly quickly, you may drop overnight and then bounce back in the morning with excess liver action................. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Chicken soup Hello. I have been having chicken soup for supper for the past couple of days. It says a can is around 2 units, so half a can should be on. However, every morning after I have chicken soup, my blood sugars are 18 (around 6 the night before). Days when I don't have chicken soup (sandwiches instead) my blood sugars are fine. Anyone else noticed problems with chicken soup? (Heinz canned chicken soup) |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / No Carb and going high I think from previous posts the OP has stated they are on a 4:1 ratio across the board and has a high insulin resistance and so using the rule - 1 unit drops 1 mmol/l.That would explain the 4+3, so this dose could have been right, assuming the PM BI tests have confirmed 18 as sufficient.......but only by elimination can the real cause be determined..... As there was only the BI dose in the system I am leaning towards an adjustment of the AM BI still..... |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Polyol and Maltitol HiSorry for not replying sooner. I think the polyols and maltitol are the same as sugar alcohols and you don't count the carb content. That's what the dietitian told me anyway. The protein bar I had has 37g of carbs in the whole bar and 10gt of those carbs were polyols, therefore the bar would have 3CPs. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Fitting when hypo Hey Jules I would have asked the same as Robby - are you taking you QA insulin when you are skipping meals - if so that would account for the hypos. If you don't eat carbs - don't take QA.I've had diabetes 36years now (from birth) and have only ever fitted once. I'm sure it will all work out for you Wullie |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / No Carb and going high Hey been reading your post Derekh and you say you went to bed with a blood sugar of 9.7 and had 1 CP. I therefore don't understand why you took 4+3 QA???It should have been 1QA for the CP and personally I wouldn't have taken a correction at that point but instead adjusted the meal before QA in the future if you were still having the same readings over a couple of days. It looks to me as though you have had a hypo during the night which has self rectified and your rise in blood sugar is the after effects of your bodies normal Glucose release in attempting to get you out of your hypo. Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Polyol and Maltitol So it seems with products like protein bars and similar that there might actually be carbohydrate stated but that they dont actually effect BGs, and even for non diabetics, effect their calorie intake, for those watching their carb intake........Definitely a point worth mentioning for any diabetics who use these products and even worth investigating and adding to the the DAFNE curriculum.... |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Polyol and Maltitol Seems like its a bit of a gray area - they are only partially digested (not sure on percentages) if it's Glycerol then according to this Maximuscle article then they don't affect your blood sugars. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Polyol and Maltitol Would there be a carbohydrate value next to these then, I wouldn't think so.......... |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps Yes, this all seems to work very well! I think this is going to be very useful for me. Main advantage - a very easy to use interface, just takes a few clicks to save your readings. Calculates your doses based on any ratio - which is also a huge advantage for me. Never been a fan of taking around booklets, pens and calculators, this is very difficult in my line of work. So next time I will have something to show the doctor. Something like this I've been looking for for years actually. Thanks for your work Simon. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps Yep, you can do it the other way - if you go to the settings page enter your DAFNE Online username and password in the Credentials bit (make sure you press done on the keyboard to save it) and then make sure te Diary Upload setting (below them) is set to on. Then, whenever you save an entry in the phone (by adding a new one or updating an existine one) it will be uploaded to the site. You can then see the site diary by clicking the My Blood Glucose Diary link which appears in the toolbox in the top right of the page when you are logged in. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Polyol and Maltitol I don't think polyols even get digested, they literally go straight through your system... |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Information on menstrual cycle
Hi JWo, Souonds like you are getting there.I can manage the first 2 weeks of my cycle okay now through experimentation. It does require ignoring the step wise approach and cuttint doses drastically at my TOTM and then using those doses, sometimes w ith a slight increase for almost a fortnight. It is after ovulation when I increase doses that I am getting into a muddle. Just can't find BI to suit for that fortnight. The doses keep crepping upwards and it is so frustrating. Haven't tried the temperature thing, but will out of curiosity.I can see when the BI drifts off though and I need more of it. I hope DAFNE Extra will take care of this. However, this course will only be delivered in a few hospitals and is a couple of years away anyway, so we need to get this sorted. has anyone asked their team at their hospital about this? I know one person did and was told that DAFNE doesn't cover this, but then the course doesn't cover the dawn phenomena and the idea of getting up in the middle of the night each night to inject short - acting but this seemed to be an okay area of discussion in post course meetings. Anyway good luck all! |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Polyol and Maltitol If it was me, reading the carbs from the packaging would be good enough for me, otherwise there information is incorrect..........If there 10 grams of carb present isn't absorbed, what happens to it, once digested all carbs are pretty much the same, no? I assume these items fall under the artificial sweetener category, in which case do they not have to be in considerable quantities to even make a dent in terms of carbohydrate load......... |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps Ok the ratio's do work with pressing "done". Was confused because I assumed that "done" would take me out of the page altogether. Thanks"You can upload entries to this site". Done a fair amount of exploring and cannot figure out how to do this - how does it work? Im assuming that "download entries from site" does it the other way, and takes entries from the site and downloads them onto the iphone. I want to do it the other way if possible. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps Hi Mark,1. Make sure you press 'Done' on the popup keyboard after you enter the ratio - this should save it for you, let me know if thet's not the case. 2. You can upload the entries to this site, and the diary display on the site can be viewed in a printer friendly format, and you can also use the charts to show trends etc - is this what you are looking for? Thanks, Simon |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps I have recently tried to use this app, having just bought an Iphone. Two questions-1. It seems to be be impossible to enter any ratio other that 1:1. My ratio is 1.5:1. It just cancels the entry and goes back to 1:1 ratio each time. My iphone OS is the most recent. 2. Is there any way to upload the readings that you have entered to a computer? So that they can be printed to make it easier for a doctor to look at? |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Polyol and Maltitol As far as I'm aware Polyols aren't absorbed by your body at all (hence why excessive consumption may have an adverse effect), so I wouldn't count them.Simon |
