Topic: General Discussion / Prescription supplies Hi,I'm debating going away for a year backpacking to New Zealand but not sure how that will work with my prescriptions. Does anyone have any experience of trying to get a years worth of supplies from their GP? My GP seems to be less than helpful as a general rule so I haven't asked him directly yet I have a pump and have contacted roche in New Zealand and they said I can purchase pump supplies at a cost Thanks, Lee |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android app
Thanks a million Simon, I've got an LG Optimus GT540. Like Lizzie I have Android OS 2.1 and it took ages to get that upgrade! I did however buy the Pro version of "Quickoffice" and it works superbly with the PDF download of the "DAFNE Carb Counting Booklet" on this site. Regards, Marcus. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android app Novarapid boy is spot on, its dependent on your phone company (Network operator to tekkies![]() that crtiicise them having the updates done by apple and NOT the phone compaines is a big advantage for me. And I get Angry Birds updates all the time, whats not to like ![]() ( its also possible that there is an update even if the phone doesn't tell you there is, another joy of some operators, we used to have to update our users phones becasue it was too complicated for them to do ( you might suspect this is a deliberate ploy by the phone companies). |

Topic: General Discussion / Help ! Any Thoughts Please. I've had a rare touch of this before but more in the form of itchiness after injecting. This was while I was on Lantus... if I remember correctly (I last experienced it years ago). Not had it with Levemir.I believe it was caused by how or where I injected if I'm honest considering it has not been a reoccurring problem for me. How well do you circulate your injection sites? Whatever the cause, I hope this issue is resolved for you soon. I'm guessing whatever is causing it is effecting your insulin absorption rate if your sugar levels are being difficult to control. |

Topic: General Discussion / Background Insulin Wow, this sounds familiar to me right now, deanna!![]() Have you been testing your BGs around the time your QA finishes after your evening meal (I find mine usually runs out about 5 hours after, so often around 1 or 2 am)? If it is high, it may be time to consider at a ratio change perhaps.... HOWEVER ... I know I'd prefer to tackle my morning highs situation this evening by having a carb free meal tonight. I shall explain why! I have been finding that my BGs are around 15 when I test after my evening meal QA has run out (humalog, so 5 hours max working time) and so injecting 3 QA to get it back down with good BGs in the morning. So there's a 3QA missing somewhere! What puzzles me though is, my dinner last night came to a total of 17CP (I take 1:1 ratio for all meals at the moment) - BUT if I was taking a higher ratio of 1:1.5, that works out to be at least 25.5QA. 25.5 minus 17 equals 8.5 QA units difference. 8.5QA is not 3QA (even 8.5 divided by 1.5 isn't 3, it's 5.6) so something isn't right here. It does hint at BI, so carb free for me tonight for (hopefully) some confirmation! ![]() Best of luck with your over-night investigation! Edit: Just added the eve meal stuff... how disappointing! I'm guessing this was a result of my inconsistent "work exercise". It's really hard to judge considering my "exercise" depends on customer demand! T_T Not sure what's best to do now though... being that high renders the carb free a bit pointless... unless it rises? :-. Shall see! |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android app My phone (Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro) tells me when there is an update available, as far as I know there is no way I can manually update to a newer system than the 2.1 I have. |

Topic: General Discussion / Help ! Any Thoughts Please. HiI sometimes experience the same " burning" which can last for a couple of hours! I have put this down to my actual injection technique where injection is not quite deep enough prior to giving the insulin ! Do you get a slight raised area around injection site ? |

Hi, I just add any 'no added sugar' diluting juice to the tea (just now I am using 'Ribena Really Light') to disguise the taste. Diluting orange or barley waters etc. will all help to make the tea easier to take- it is not a strong taste but I think the aftertaste is a bit like I've been chewing grass which is really not that pleasant!I hope it works for you. |

Topic: General Discussion / Hay fever - BG's gone high Hi Heather,My best mate is heavily into herbal treatments so if I mentioned the nettle tea - there would be a lot of approval :-) Thats a great idea - will look into it - where d'you get the sugar diluting liquid? The grassy flavour sounds a bit nasty as I know grass pollen is the reason why I get the hayfever. Cheers again. |

Hello, I know that I'm probably going to sound like a hippy but have you tried nettle tea for your hayfever? I find it works better for me than the Piriton that I used to take and it doesn't affect my blood sugars at all. I have a mug of it every day in Spring and Summer and I haven't had any symptoms at all so far (I must admit that I disguise the taste of the tea by adding some sugar free diluting juice as its a bit 'grassy' for my taste!). You can get it in most supermarkets as well as health food shops and it might just be worth a try. |

Topic: General Discussion / Hay fever - BG's gone high I'm not keen on the cetirizine to be honest - BG's weren't affected at all but I wasn't keen on being drowsy - cetainly wouldnt work if I was at work. Its a mystery then re: Loratadine - I checked several websites and it said it caused insulin resistance - maybe I'm just 1 of the unlucky ones but it definitely affected my BG's.I'll have to try several antihistimines to find the right one I guess. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Blueberries If you go here it states 50 berries are 9.85g (1CP).........but things like these are only a guide, testing is the best way to find out how X amount effects the BGs........has your counting been working so far............? |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android app
Most of the phones out there now have the latest android OS designed for phones, most commonly 2.2, 2.3(Gingerbread) exists and many more advanced users have manually installed this version, some manufacturers have too I believe but testing is still taking place on other phones before they release 2.3 for everyone........ So to answer the question for the majority of Android users, without jail-breaking their devices, only OS versions tested and provided by the Network Operators are released when they see fit...... |

Topic: General Discussion / Help ! Any Thoughts Please. I haven't heard of this happening to the levels you have described unfortunately...................however I am aware that the insulin Levemir is slightly acidic and can cause allergic reaction and some time burning quite often in a lot of people.....This wouldn't explain your reaction to the analogue insulin's like Novorapid etc...............as these insulin's have been made in a lab the problem may lie with that fact, maybe some animal insulin may solve your problems............. I hope you find some answers............. ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Background Insulin As Chris mentioned, the 'Dawn Phenomenon' is the most likely culprit and its something that everyone probably experiences, only some, like myself, struggle to tackle it....What have your readings been at 3am then, if you have monitored them and they look fine, as mine do, then the Dawn Phenomenon is the most likely cause.... My unprofessional advice would be to start increasing your background dose, if split, then the evening dose should be increased, do some 3am test again to see what effect its having, it may help tackle the highs...it might not eliminate them completely but it may help................... |

I take Cetirizine hydrochloride based tablets and these don't affect my blood sugar. I found Loratadine based tablets didn't work very well on my allergies. Its worth trying both types to see which work best and have the least effect on yout BG. I agree with others the lactose content should not have a noticable effect on your BG. |

Topic: General Discussion / Hay fever - BG's gone high It is a pain. It might be that I'm a bit susceptible to this type of antihistimine.I think I panicked when I saw my BG before was only 5.0 - I tend to panic a bit if the BG readings arent perfectly in the 'zone'. So from now on - less panicking. chrisinbrum - I might have to check out the tablets your taking. I've already had different reactions to 2 antihistimines - with cetirizine after 1 tablet I became a zombie - completely knocked me out and with the loratadine - although the tablets are tiny it took 4 days before I felt the effect - it didnt matter what I did with corrections nothing worked, hence when I came off the tablets I've been able to control my BG's better and the corrections are now working. |

Topic: General Discussion / Background Insulin Have you been doing blood tests during the night then? Has that shown what your BG is doing during the night, and does it show your BG going up at a particular time?On our DAFNE course we were told about the 'dawn phenomenon'. Basically I think your body releases hormones before you wake up to get your body ready for the day ahead, and this can make your body release it's own glucose stores...so your BG starts going up. |

Topic: General Discussion / Hay fever - BG's gone high I take desloratidine (neoclarityn) tablets for my hayfever and they don't seem to cause a problem, or I haven't noticed that they do anyway!I'd be surprised if it was the lactose in the loratadine tablets - they're still small and I'm sure you'd need a lot to equal just 1CP. |

Topic: General Discussion / Background Insulin Recently i have been waking up in the morning with high glucose readings from anywhere between 10.5 - 16.0, no matter what reading i go to sleep on. I have been diagnosed for over 2 years now and apart from these last few months, have had no problems or bad reactions to any insulin i have been taking. At first nurses and doctors thought that i could be experiencing hypos during the night which could result in a high glucose level in the morning, however, i have been monitoring this possibility for over a month now, and i feel that i should now rule that out of the equation. Has anyone got any ideas what could be causing this ? |
