Topic: Questions for HCPs / Information on menstrual cycle
Hi JWo, Souonds like you are getting there.I can manage the first 2 weeks of my cycle okay now through experimentation. It does require ignoring the step wise approach and cuttint doses drastically at my TOTM and then using those doses, sometimes w ith a slight increase for almost a fortnight. It is after ovulation when I increase doses that I am getting into a muddle. Just can't find BI to suit for that fortnight. The doses keep crepping upwards and it is so frustrating. Haven't tried the temperature thing, but will out of curiosity.I can see when the BI drifts off though and I need more of it. I hope DAFNE Extra will take care of this. However, this course will only be delivered in a few hospitals and is a couple of years away anyway, so we need to get this sorted. has anyone asked their team at their hospital about this? I know one person did and was told that DAFNE doesn't cover this, but then the course doesn't cover the dawn phenomena and the idea of getting up in the middle of the night each night to inject short - acting but this seemed to be an okay area of discussion in post course meetings. Anyway good luck all! |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Polyol and Maltitol If it was me, reading the carbs from the packaging would be good enough for me, otherwise there information is incorrect..........If there 10 grams of carb present isn't absorbed, what happens to it, once digested all carbs are pretty much the same, no? I assume these items fall under the artificial sweetener category, in which case do they not have to be in considerable quantities to even make a dent in terms of carbohydrate load......... |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps Ok the ratio's do work with pressing "done". Was confused because I assumed that "done" would take me out of the page altogether. Thanks"You can upload entries to this site". Done a fair amount of exploring and cannot figure out how to do this - how does it work? Im assuming that "download entries from site" does it the other way, and takes entries from the site and downloads them onto the iphone. I want to do it the other way if possible. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps Hi Mark,1. Make sure you press 'Done' on the popup keyboard after you enter the ratio - this should save it for you, let me know if thet's not the case. 2. You can upload the entries to this site, and the diary display on the site can be viewed in a printer friendly format, and you can also use the charts to show trends etc - is this what you are looking for? Thanks, Simon |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Iphone Apps I have recently tried to use this app, having just bought an Iphone. Two questions-1. It seems to be be impossible to enter any ratio other that 1:1. My ratio is 1.5:1. It just cancels the entry and goes back to 1:1 ratio each time. My iphone OS is the most recent. 2. Is there any way to upload the readings that you have entered to a computer? So that they can be printed to make it easier for a doctor to look at? |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Polyol and Maltitol As far as I'm aware Polyols aren't absorbed by your body at all (hence why excessive consumption may have an adverse effect), so I wouldn't count them.Simon |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Polyol and Maltitol HiWas wondering if anyone knew when carb counting do you include the polyols and maltitol? Reason I ask is I bought protein bars which have 37g carbs of which 10g is polyols and I have a sweetener/syrup which is maltitol. Thanks in advance best regards Derek |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / No Carb and going high repeat the same conditions for another couple of days to confirm its no a one off....................as there was no other insulin action apart from your BI, mostly the 20, I would assume that 20 may need increased, but make sure it wasnt a one off though......... |

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise and high BG Littleboots, i have the same problem as you. I'm a bit of a gym junkie - Ive always had the mentality that exercise will lower my BGL. Since doing dafne (and tracking my BGLs vigilantly) ive learned that this is not the case. My BGL is high 99% of the time after exercise... If I don't give 1.5- 2 units prior to exercise, my BGL goes high and stays high for hours afterwards (even if i correct straight after exercise). It left me feeling fatigued and like rubbish! I was then advised to try giving the extra units BEFORE exercising ( i was very fearful of doing this at first but carried jelly beans just in case i had a hypo), but was told by my specialist to always '"marry" this later and make sure i deduct the QA i had given from my next meal in order to prevent a hypo. After some experimenting though, I personally discovered that i don't need to "marry" this later, and that i just to indeed need the additional units to cover exercise. If you haven't already, i would suggest you monitor your BGLs very closely around exercise, and maybe try giving 0.5unit or 1 unit before you exercise to see what effect it has. Personally for me, weights, boxing and spin classes (high intensity) will have the biggest impact on my BGL so i'll give 2 extra units prior.. other less intense activities, ill give 1- 1.5 units. |

Topic: General Discussion / Id cards I constantly need to get new ID cards from my clinic as I find that they do not last as long as they used to. What I wonder though is - would there be any DAFNE specific cards available now or in the future.Would be good in order to assist medical and nursing staff realise we are DAFNE trained. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / No Carb and going high Hi Here's the story. Went to bed at 12:45am this morning with a BS of 9.7, had 1 CP and took 4+3 QA, and also my BI of 18 units. Woke this morning at 8:10am with BS of 7.6, had breakfast at 9am which was Carb free (cheese omelette) so took no QA but took 20 BI and by lunchtime at 1:17pm my BS was 13.7, why? The bedtime BI surely must have still been in my system and the morning BI kicks in after 2 hrs. What have I done wrong and what should I have done. kind regards Derek |

Topic: General Discussion / Prescription supplies Hi Lee,It was a long time ago but yes it was easy. I just booked a GP appointment, explained what happened (I left my spares in a fridge in Thailand) and he did me a prescription. Yes I had to pay. Think I might have paid to see the GP too. I claimed it back on my health insurance. Michelle |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Information on menstrual cycle Anyone had any positive progress?
As I've shown on the updated progress of my work towards TOTM understanding, since that change from that Monday of taking MORN 7 and EVE 16... I've now been on MORN 7 and EVE 14 for a couple of weeks now but I've yet to properly identify when I'm supposed to put it back to 10BI and 16 BI. I have also been monitoring my body temperature every morning - It has been hovering up and down between 35C and 35.8C (35.8 was this morning)... I'm not sure when to make the association that it's my "time" considering the temp window is so small... but based on that chart from the wikipedia page, perhaps I should wait until I hit above 36C? Considering I've also been regularly under the 36C... is this because of my diabetes? I know I'm infamous for being a very easily chilled person to others. What do we think? Thanks for any responses! |

Topic: General Discussion / Help The first link didn't really go into much about type 1, although there was a diet plan he thought could eliminate the need for insulin if caught early enough, to me that is a fairytale.............I can understand the theories on low carb, high fat diets in the way he described it, however the myth that diabetics, especially type 2 patients should eat lots of carbs is long gone I believe..... Low carb and most importantly slowly absorbed carbs are best........definitely food for thought in the weight loss context though, i will need to investigate further......... |

I am not aware of any rules regarding links and currently the forum is not moderated, but I am sure links regarding insulin and carbs are perfectly suited to this site............thanks I will take a look..... I think the beauty of DAFNE is that you dont need to use sweeteners, you just inject for what your eating.....simples.... |

Topic: General Discussion / Help Hi MichellemI have thought about joining a slimming class because you just don't know how much to eat. I joined Tesco diets last year for a short spell and discovered I wasn't eating enough to keep the metabolism ticking over, lost some weight but it was hard to follow as there far too many different foods to eat. I can eat the same thing every day and don't need variety. I think it is an age thing also as I used to lose weight easy but now it seems impossible lol. Novorapidboi, there are a lot of articles online about insulin, carbs and weight gain. When bodybuilders want to bulk they use carbs to do that. There used to be some who actually took insulin to put on weight, don't know if they still do. I don't know if you are able to post links o here but here are a couple of sites to check out http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/index.html a site by Barry Groves PHD from the Cotswold, with lots of info about diet and carbs etc http://www.garytaubes.com/ a site by an American science writer who has written books on carbs and weight gain. Worth a look, probably get banned for posting information that goes against the current dietary guidelines. When first diagnosed I was told you must eat carbs and so I done that, the more carbs = more insulin and over the years the weight crept up and despite always eating low fat the GP always assumed I was consuming too much fat, but my vice was sweet stuff, ice cream, cadburys twin pots and despite no longer eating these things I am finding it hard to lose weight. I've actually gained 4 lbs since doing dafne because of eating more carbs and a large increase in insulin. Used to take 6-8i units at meals but now can take up to 26 units, which I have never taken. If anyone likes sweet stuff you can buy calorie and carb free syrups online and a calorie free sweetener which tastes exactly like sugar called ZSweet, it is expensive though. Best regards Derek |

Topic: General Discussion / Prescription supplies That's what I did but was only going for 3 months so didn't need to take as much. You'd need to consider the amount you'd need to be carrying if you had a whole years worth of supply. I ended up losing my spare insulin and had to buy some when in Oz, it wasn't too bad, just saw a GP and he prescribed it for me. |

Topic: General Discussion / Help Hi Derek,You talk about wanting to lose weight as well as get your HBA1c down but it being difficult to manage both at the same time. I managed to lose 2 stones (it took me a year, but slow and steady is the way). In that time all my insulin needs and HBA1c came down. I was still eating carbs but trying to use complex carbs and was also still eating lots and could snack when I wanted. It could also help with the night time snacking as you'd be able to but would get more ideas on the best things to have. I'm not sure if I should be singing the praises of a specific group on here but it was 'Slimming world' and I'd recommend you might want to think about something like that. The support of a group might help too (men do go!) Good luck with your BS, you seem to be getting there! Michelle |
