Topic: General Discussion / Carbs v Cals Whilst I appriciate calories are a different messurment of food "energy", it would seem to me that if your levels are under control you don't put on weight. Therefore, would it be fair to say A) you don't need to calorie count to loose weight B) people in general should carbs count rather than calorie count to lose weight My parter is dieting at the mo and he has to count calories in items that us type 1's don't really have to worry about I.e. Tea, salad etc. What are your thoughts? |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Metformin /Type 1 I take metformin also 1 a day and I don't think it effected me one way or the other when I started using DAFNE. Although, the course leaders were shocked that I need so little BI (so they said). I take 10 at night only. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Lasagne Sorry to confuse you as you would not know I tend to round up in cases where the value comes out by half. So I did indeed take 6 my BG is at 6.9 |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Lasagne Ahh, I though you decided on 4CP for the lasagne.................so with your ratio of 1.5:1 you would be taking 6 units of insulin.....Your method of correction is news to me also, would you not just add 1 unit onto your carb dose of 6, or if you decided on 3CPs, 5 units....... |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypoes at dinner Exactly the advice I was looking for. Essentially if a do have a hypo at meal, treat it, wait 15 minutes, then act as normal (though no adjustments for the mealt time, jsut straight QA to CP ratio) |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Lasagne No I opted for 3 as the CP value of my vegan lasagne so I added .5 for the borderline BG and I'll test again in an hour or so and see where I am at. |

Topic: General Discussion / How can you work out HBA1c by using your BG averages? Is it possible? I think the formula came from a calculated observation/relationship between the finger test averages and the HbA1c test result....As I say, so far its not been correct, but definitely close, the more reading you have the more accurate it may become.......... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / BG Diary It is a pain I know..................For best results on Injections, splitting your BI dose is best, this can be with Lantus or Levemir most commonly, Humilin I is another, one will work best...............injecting your evening dose right before bed is best together with another injection when you wake, this gives you a larger quantity of BI in your system at this time, which will help towards getting your waking level down........ This also means that you may be running out of BI on the run up to bedtime, so you will need to compensate with more daytime BI, higher dinner time QA ratio or a combination of both.......... From my own personal experience, carbs are needed when you wake in order to let the liver know you no longer need a dump of glucose as you have refueled manually...............I have wanted to test my daytime dose with a carb free breakfast, or no breakfast at all, but its impossible, as the dawn phenomenon continues right up until lunch unless you refuel with carbs......... Currently I am carrying out this scenario, I inject at 2230 every night though as opposed to straight before bed, I have also noticed that 15-30 minutes of moderate activity (sweaty and heavy breathing) after dinner also helps as the muscles regain their stores of energy right into the next morning......... Trying to beat DP can be easy for some, but for other like myself, and possible you, a more strategic approach is needed..... Have you also considered resistance to insulin at different BG levels, the higher you are the less 1 unit may drop you, this may also help trying to get on target for lunch.... I would also stress again, that in order to be effective, you should not change your ratios by the day, you need to give that ratio a chance for a few days, and only try and change one thing at a time.............so I would recommend concentrating on your BI |

Topic: Site Development / Do you use the Diary Graphs? Blood Glucose Target Charts are good and bright. Like the way the graph scrolls out when started![]() Is it possible to use these colours throughout all of the graph types as the rest are indistinct and although I have no experience I could imagine them being difficult to see on a smart phone screen in bright light. chrisinbrum - I just manipulate the data entry to get the info where I want and that keeps the graph right. Topic: General Discussion / BG Diary the last few days ive eaten a cereal bar with 22g of carbs in but at 7am i have to have 8 units of QA to cover it, i have monitored my sugar closely i havnt hypod, but if i dont want to wake up at 7am i am actually condemned, BI wont cover the morning rise. I have also tried splitting lantus many times and dosages in the last 6 months, which for some parts of the day worked out good and bad but never covers the morning rise. Im a single parent and i just feel so energyless everyday, im not sure whether a pump would be the best option either, however i think i will discuss having a pancreas transplant because most days i wake up with blurry vision because of this and i dont seem to be able to do anything with injections to prevent it |

Topic: General Discussion / Orlistat (Xenical) i took that about 2 years ago, it didnt effect my blood sugar though. But it does cause an uncontrollable laxative effect which can be embarassing even when you consume little amounts of fat. Doctor put me on reductil after that which stopped my appetite completely but it did drop my blood sugar because reductil is related to anti depressant.I hope you have some luck with your xenical ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Hb1Ac results hmm your worst years seem to be your teenage years, I just can't imagine why![]() It does show however 30 years and hopefully only a minor complication so its not inevitable that complications occur. Nice to see you Hb1Ac drop after the course as well, another happy DAFNE customer ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Lasagne no worries some people can't see the word vegan![]() As for the tofu it's roughly 7-8cps per package at 400g but there is a lot of water in that weight. Also I only used half a pack so say 3 making it about .5cp per portion depending on which way you want to round it which is why i didn't really bother counting it. I'll roughly estimate it at 4 and see what happens. My standard ratio is 1.5 |
