Topic: General Discussion / BG Diary

the last few days ive eaten a cereal bar with 22g of carbs in but at 7am i have to have 8 units of QA to cover it, i have monitored my sugar closely i havnt hypod, but if i dont want to wake up at 7am i am actually condemned, BI wont cover the morning rise. I have also tried splitting lantus many times and dosages in the last 6 months, which for some parts of the day worked out good and bad but never covers the morning rise. Im a single parent and i just feel so energyless everyday, im not sure whether a pump would be the best option either, however i think i will discuss having a pancreas transplant because most days i wake up with blurry vision because of this and i dont seem to be able to do anything with injections to prevent it

Topic: General Discussion / Orlistat (Xenical)

i took that about 2 years ago, it didnt effect my blood sugar though. But it does cause an uncontrollable laxative effect which can be embarassing even when you consume little amounts of fat. Doctor put me on reductil after that which stopped my appetite completely but it did drop my blood sugar because reductil is related to anti depressant.
I hope you have some luck with your xenical Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Hb1Ac results

hmm your worst years seem to be your teenage years, I just can't imagine why Wink I always tell people how thankful I am that I didn't develop my Diabetes until I was in my 30's when my rock'n'roll years where all behind me. I meet so many people who were 'off the rails' in their teenage years and its not hard to imagine why.
It does show however 30 years and hopefully only a minor complication so its not inevitable that complications occur. Nice to see you Hb1Ac drop after the course as well, another happy DAFNE customer Very Happy

no worries some people can't see the word vegan Laughing

As for the tofu it's roughly 7-8cps per package at 400g but there is a lot of water in that weight. Also I only used half a pack so say 3 making it about .5cp per portion depending on which way you want to round it which is why i didn't really bother counting it.

I'll roughly estimate it at 4 and see what happens. My standard ratio is 1.5

Topic: General Discussion / How can you work out HBA1c by using your BG averages? Is it possible?

Just a reminder that your 'capillary' (finger-prick) BG tests and HbA1c are measuring completely different things so it's not really possible to apply a formula to work it out, however if you refer to the course handbook, that does give a very rough guide to your HbA1c and how it might relate to your overall BG levels.

The reporting of HbA1c has also changed, so you will be seeing the phasing out of the '%' results, to be replaced with 'mmol/mol', therefore if you have a HbA1c of 8% that will now be reported as 64mmol/mol.

Blood Glucose Range HbA1c Result

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypoes at dinner

Hi,

The safe advice is to treat any BG below 3.5mmol/l (even if it's a meal time) with 1.5 - 2 CPs rapid acting carbs, e.g. 150ml-200ml fruit juice; 3 - 4 jelly babies; 5 - 6 Dextrose tablets; 100ml - 120ml Lucozade.

You need to give these rapid acting carbs 10-15min to get into your bloodstream before you start to eat more food, otherwise it could take you longer to recover as the other food in your stomach will slow down the absorption of the glucose.

Once your BG is back up into the correct range for the time of day, simply match any mealtime CPs with your usual ratio of QA insulin.

Hope this answers your query?

...I gues the carb counter will be including cheese sauce though, so that might explain some of the difference between your calculation and the published on

you may be right there...................

moral of the story, unless eating out, use the packaging.................. Very Happy

Carb counter = Dafne one yes

No dairy as this is a vegan dish as stated.

6 sheets lasagne not pre-cooked
1 700g bottle of passatta (see first post for break down)
half an onion
several mushrooms
half a pack of tofu (negligible carbs)
drained chopped spinach

Allows for 4 portions

So in my opinion its only the lasagne sheets, you could maybe add one on for the whole bottle of passata and tofu, equaling 7 CPs, so 1.75CP per portion, assuming it has been divided equally, round it up to 2 if you want........apply your ratio and your off...................

i could go a lasagne now........... Smile

Did you have any cheese sauce on the lasagne - that would add CPs with any milk or flour/cornflour used.

I made a vegetarian lasagne recently and I found that my calculated CP per portion works out less than a pre-packed version or the values the carb counters give.

Topic: General Discussion / Orlistat (Xenical)

Just wondering whether anyone has used Orlistat as a weight loss drug.

Started taking this today and my BG increased considerably between breakfast and lunch even though I had used a correction dose at breakfast. Don't know whether this is just 'one of those things' or whether there is some relevance to me taking the tablet this morning.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Lasagne

The tomato sauce wouldn't really be significant, as its less than 10g per bottle, how much do you use, all of it............?

To me there a 6CPs in this dish, if in fact the packaging stated it as 1CP per sheet.................so divide that by 4 and you get 1.5CP per portion..........when you refer to carb counter, is that the DAFNE carb counter?

The 4.5CP listed is a reasonably accurate guide to the value in 300g of pasta, you cant beat the actual packaging you buy it in though.......

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Lasagne

I made vegan lasagne with 6 sheets dried and not pre-boiled. The carb counter says 1cp per sheet. My 6 sheet lasagne issued 4 portions so wouldn't that be 1.5cp per portion vs 4.5 listed under lasagne portion?

Is it counting the tomato sauce? mine is just passatta with onions and mushrooms in it. According to my calculations the cp would be 1.5 per portion (6gram carb per 100g in 700g bottle)

So I am looking at 3cp per portion?

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypoes at dinner

I would normally treat the hypo with jelly babies, but I am confident the glucose from it would be used up very quickly, so not noticeably effected by the following meal.............only high fat items would keep digestion at bay..........

treating also means you can inject before eating too, which is sometimes essential when trying to match the digestion to the insulin action........

my vote would be to treat the low, then inject as normal................and then start thinking about why your low, and if happening regularly your dose might be out..............

Topic: Site Development / Do you use the Diary Graphs?

I think the graphs are very good, and helpful. The only problem is that if I have any QA or BI without checking BG, the graphs just treat the absence of a BG reading as 0 and the graphs and averages are then confusing and inaccurate. Can the settings be changed so that any absent BG readings don't affect the data in this way?

(The reason i sometimes don't do a BG reading at food/injection times is if for example I did a BG half an hour earlier while driving, or if it's only a couple of hours since a previous QA so any BG wouldn't give a true result because there's still QA in my system etc.)
