Corn on Cob - did you know?.....

Just thought i'd share this after I had a corn on the cob for dinner!

I wasnt going to bother checking/counting this as DAFNE says not to worry too much about vegetables etc!! But I glanced at the nutrition info and it said 100g of cob (cooked) was 19.6g!

I had a 185g piece (standard sort of size from shop - but double the sort of one you get at the harvester!) and so it worked out 3.5 CP's.

I was surprised by this! I went with it, and I guess ill see later whether its right!

I would be interested to know how you got on with counting your corn on the cob. I have always counted sweetcorn pre DAFNE because like you say there is quite a lot of carbohydrate in it. I was surprised to find from my DAFNE course that you do not need to count either peas or sweetcorn because of how these are digested by the body. I haven't counted them since and don't seem to have any problems.

Look forward to seeing whether you was affected by counting it as 3.5 CPs.

well....

three hours on I am 5.1! (was 5.6 before dinner). So it seems to have been ok. I am pretty sure I counted the rest of my meal correctly.

So I guess the packet was right really. I haven't gone drastically low so its round about correct at 3.5 CP's for the normal size corn on the cob.
As its bed time though Ill have 1 CP I think!

Hi Folks,
I was interested to read your notes on corn on the cob. Like Karen I used to count it but since DAFNE I haven't and I don't get high blood sugars as a result. Strange how different people react in different ways. Cheers John

I had a problem with Corn on the Cob as well. I counted it during my Dafne course and it resulted in low blood sugars. Was told not to count it. Have carried on not counting it and seem to be ok with that. Go with whatever is best for you.

I still count tinned sweetcorn, even though I get the unsweetened varieties there still seems to be a lot of carbs in there.

You apparently dont count the carbs in corn because of the high fibre content. I dont count it and dont have problems.

Just resurfacing this one....
I haven't had corn on the cob for years, but decided to reawaken the 70/80's, when I spotted a basket full in my local F&V shop. I was unsure to count the CPs or not, but whilst it was bubbling away in the pan, I did a bit of surfing. I hadn't weighed the cob, so just judged it to be average-size, and decided on 2 CPs. I took my corresponding amount of insulin for the full meal, and must have judged it about right. Nothing else in the evening, and pre-bed I was 7.6BG.
And it was DELICIOUS!

Everyone is different as we all know, I personally dont count.........

For those who do, what is your total daily dose of background insulin.......?

I count the CP value of sweetcorn on the cob, and inject QA according to the ratio for the rest of that meal

My BI is 16 (7 at breakfast, 9 at bed)
