Topic: General Discussion / Birth Announcement HelloI would like to announce the birth of our beautiful daughter, Lilia Maddison, born on the 23/07/2011 weighing 7lbs 3 oz. She was born at 36 weeks and 6 days by c section. The birth was early due to myself having recently developed Pre Eclampsia a few days earlier. I would like to mention that by doing the Dafne approach, my diabetes was never a cause for concern throughout the pregnancy. However, I am beginning a new chapter now.. trying to manage my diabetes again whilst breastfeeding. Im sure that I will conquer any obstacles with help from the Dafne Team and possibly other Diabetic Mothers breastfeeding. I would like to thank all the staff at the James Paget Hospital for their help and support they have given me to have a healthy baby. Good luck to all you insulin dependant diabetics out there who are trying to get pregnant/are pregnant and doing the Dafne way. If you wish to share your experiences with me, I would be interested to hear them. Caroline |

Topic: General Discussion / Help with adjustments post DAFNE Hi everybodyI am new to the forum. I have had diabetes for 13 years and have never gained control. I am now trying to get excellent control as I hope to start a family as soon as possible. I am attending pre conception sessions at the hospital but appointments are quite far apart and each day is precious to me to try and get control. I completed the DAFNE course last week as a starting point of getting better control and since then my readings are a bit more stable but high. I find it very difficult to look at my own results and see patterns and where to make changes so I am hoping that you can all help me please. I have attached the last few days of my diary and would be very very grateful for any comments/suggestions. Some info to note: I am on Novorapid and Levemir (switched from Lantus to Levemir 1 week ago.) Dafne nurses said that I am not to test between meals as temptation to correct highs but I do test sometimes when I am about to drive etc and they are going up to 18, I am really not happy about this. The nurses also seem to not want me to change the ratio of 1:1 for fast acting insulin but I am so tempted to just triple it! I really am desperate now and feel as if I am just wasting more and more time by trying to do things slowly. Any help will be greatly appreciated. If you need any further information to help please just ask me. Many thanks x |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Fitting when hypo Hi JulesSevere hypos can actually cause fits in anyone if the glucose level goes low enough, in fact it was used in the early 1950s as treatment for schizophrenia ('insulin shock treatment') and the idea was to cause a fit in people without diabetes by injecting insulin to lower the glucose. Of course it didn't work and was abandoned. Whether you have a fit or not will depend upon your overall threshold for fits which varies in all of us. For example shortage of oxygen (hypoxia) can also cause fits. They are not that uncommon in children and very scary for everybody. As novorapidboi26 says you are probably vulnerable as your glucose control is so tight (in fact probably overtight at 6.1%) which means your defences which push your glucose back up agin are not kicking in very well probably till your glucose is down to under 2. This isn't good! If your glucose is high when you wake up it is probably very low at other times, perhaps during the night. DAFNE courses really help people with hypo problems to reduce the risk although there are other issues to deal with as well. Simon |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / How to download data from iphone app Hi there, I'm halfway through my DAFNE course and was feeling a little disheartened this evening believing technology was not as great as i thought. Indeed I was close to throwing my ipod across the room for not uploading my diary but thank goodness for forums! the re-save trick is the one to do it.This app is going to make my diary maintenance so much easier.I will mention this tip to my cohort tomorrow and get the educators to pass it on in future courses too. Thanks for a splendid app. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Fitting when hypo I'm 41and a T1 diabetic and had a very bad hypo in hospital about two years ago and fitted I could hear every thing that was being said to me but could not respond to it when I did come round I found that I had split my head open on the end of the bed.Was thankfully not had any more hypos that bad since. Because I had fitted I had to let the DVLA know and lost my license for a year and had to have a medical to get it back. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Thyroxine side effects Maria, what I was trying to say (obviously not very clearly) was that if starting these thyroxine tablets increases your body's demand for insulin, then if you are not diabetic, your pancreas would naturally produce more insulin. If subsequently, you become diabetic, then your insulin doses would be calculated based on what you then need - when you are already on the thyroxine tablets. Does that make sense?I seem to have finally got my insulin doses sorted out and my BGs have returned to more acceptable levels, thank goodness. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Thyroxine side effects
Sorry Alan, I haven't logged in for a while & just noticed your post. I don't think being on thyriod tabs before I had diabetes would make any difference to the outcome with diabetes. The tablets I'm on are called EUTROXSIG & I take 200mcg for four days & 300mcg for the other three with no problems. With you taking such a small dose (25mcg) then having to compensate with large QA corrections, WOW, that must be one powerful medication you're on! ![]() All the very best. Maria |

Topic: General Discussion / Help needed, ketones but bg in range Hi Deano,As well as using your sick day rules (well done), you probably just need to have some CPs with QA insulin to help to clear the ketones. Hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday |

Topic: General Discussion / Help needed, ketones but bg in range Hi, I currently on holiday and have come into a problem. Woke up today with massive toothache, went to emergency dentist and have absis and broken wisdom tooth. Been given some antibiotics and pain killers to treat until infection gone.I tested earlier and blood glucose high with three ketones, so started the sick day rules and have basically done the job of reducing the ketones and bg. However my bg is now in range but I still have one/two ketones(on borderline). Im drinking loads of fluids to try and flush them out, I'm going to check my BG and ketones in three hours time again. Its late saturday night and should be enjoying holiday, but all I have to show is ketones and sore mouth que violins lol. Any help would be appreciated, Cheers deano |

Topic: Site Development / Do you use the Diary Graphs? Chris - just looking at this again; the graphs which calculate averages (mean/modal) don't take into account BG readings of 0 or empty ones, which graph is behaving in the way you describe?Garry - thanks for the feedback, will change them. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Thyroxine side effects Maria, what tablets are you on? I'm on 25mcg Levothyroxine and they definitely seem to be affecting me - my BG readings seem to have gone through the roof since I've been taking them. As well as giving myself QA corrections of +2, +3 and +4, I've had to increase my BI dose. The nurse at my GP surgery has looked on the Internet and found that these tablets can require increased insulin doses.I noticed in your posting that you were on Thyroxine before your diabetes was diagnosed, so perhaps you wouldn't have been affected by this. |

Topic: General Discussion / Are we all eating too many carbs? Thanks for that Mark - you've confirmed what I was thinking about it. As you pointed out 'don't believe everything you see on the internet'.Anyway, I enjoy my carbs - Lamb Madras without rice? UNTHINKABLE! |

Topic: General Discussion / Are we all eating too many carbs? Sorry but for me the wonderful thing about the internet is anyone can publish any rubbish and hence we get articles like that. He says 'back in the day before insulinwas discovered... diabetes was treated with a low carbohydrate diet', haha, nope sorry before insulin was discovered people just died. There is a good book about it apparently, my consultant who likes to stray from the subject ![]() The article then goes on about engineers being the best medics, again haha, I hope my consultant didn't help to write windows or I'm in big trouble ![]() As you can tell I don't think much of the article or the idea that we eat too many carbs, i would rather enjoy a shorter life eating them than have diabetes for 80 years. Genetically I might be able to eat loads of carbs and never suffer complications anyway or I might be a perfect diabetic and get them anyway, life is just not so simple as eat low carbs = live longer. I'm not advocating a total do what you want obviously but I really don't think low carb diets are a good idea. I also trust the medical profession to give me the best advice they can rather than believe its all drug companies trying to line their pockets.... rant ends ![]() |
