Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Low carb bread

Hi Helen,
I tend to agree with you that it it is all so confusing, that is the Lo Carbs Aldi bread combined with higher fats and proteins will lead to weight loss. Even one of my friends today told me he was not eating avocados as the higher fats will lead to weight gain. I disagreed with him as it has always been free food in my diet and not a concern due to the “good fats.” It is also such a hassle guesstimating the insulin dosages due to the higher fats and proteins without substantive proof that Aldi Lo carb bread will necessarily lead to weight loss.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Low carb bread

Thanks Torana, I will have another look at the Aldi local bread but as I don't eat much bread I will probably stick with the low GI stuff from W'worths. Good Luck, Helen

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Low carb bread

Hi Helen,
Thanks for your reply. It is clear that the nutritional information states that two pieces of Aldi Lo carb bread is two pieces for five grams of carbs as opposed to other bread approximately two pieces for thirty grams of carb. Of course, it is difficult to estimate insulin dosages with the higher fats and protein to take into consideration but WOW what a difference in the carb intake throughout the day especially if one wants to lose weight! I have also found my sugars are much more stable after the meal, most probably due to the low GI index of the bread.

Topic: General Discussion / Managing diabetes on a holiday to Nepal

Not posted before - but looking for any help, advice or comments on the following:

I am visiting Nepal for a holiday in 10 days time. Has anyone any experience of this country in respect of managing their diabetes. I am visiting Kathmandu, Chitwan National Park, Pokahra areas so altitude less than 2000 metres. Any advice on type of food in respect of carb counting, anticiapted problems with meter would be helpful. I appreciate it is a late request but any feedback would be welcomed. I am 65 and relatively fit for my age I am not going treking to base camp or climbing Everest!

I was going to use the http://diabetestravel.org site for calculating my basal insulin for the flights but have not found it so useful this time (unlike in the past for trips to USA & Canada) so if anyone knows of any other such calculators for managing basal insulin (twice daily for me) on flights / time zones I would be please to know of them.

Thanks in anticipation.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / ½ a f n ¾ using libre freestyle for2 months

My Hb1 has remained fairly stable for 14 years since completing Darnell course 14 years ago.
However since using freestyle I notice post lunch levels rise very high on some days even though I know I have started having more insulin at lunch time than my carb counting would indicate I require.Lunch is always fairly small simple meal such as slice of whole meal bread and small salad, more likely homemade soup in winter .Icant help wondering if I am making situation worse by becoming anxious about it ,sometimes b g seems to start coming down fine then without any food or change of normal routine starts to rise again.Any suggestions welcome

I'm a bit more prmitive, I print onto A4 and cut it in half to get A5 Very Happy Same result and just use a heavy grade paper or cardboard for the cover. One important point is word documents might need adjusting on your printer as all printers set their own non-printable parts to the page unless they are 'photo' printing but you can usually get it to print ok.... If you want my templates I'm also happy to send them to you. We should find a place on the site to make them available I guess....

Topic: General Discussion / Splitting lantus dose

I split mine - have done for years - currently equally 10 at 0900 and 10 at 2100, but I adjust depending on weight - if a put on a few kg's then I need to up it - and usually this is the 2100 dose as I am often rising in the morning - my consultant doesn't recommend having too bigger gap between the 2 doses though

Topic: General Discussion / Dexcom G6

Cheers guys

In the end I did go with the G6 - and I do like the alerts - it isn't without its issues though - 1 of which is stickyness - I never had a Libre ever come off, 14 days for each, but the G6 is almost falling off after 10 days, and I have started using (an additional cost) SkinTac to keep it on. There are also some reliability issues - I haven't had any yet, but many in the FB forum are.

To be honest - as it stands, I don't think I will renew the 12 month contract - a) 12 months is a long time, b) the issues reported mean I am not too convinced this is as great as it seems, and c) whilst the Libre doesn't have alerts - yet! adding the miaomiao tool may mean that this is a better tool.

Cheers

Sorry Annette, I've been working on updating and fixing the iOS app and missed these - the issue is now fixed in the latest version (2.3.3) so I'd encourage you to upgrade as soon as possible.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Correction

Everyone is different and so are times of day........I use two different correction factors.....

if you just use the trial and error techniques taught in DAFNE you can work them out for you...

No, it’s not ok. Just entered my night time BG and it’s given it loads of 0’s ending in a 1 again. Sigh. Is anyone actually taking any notice of my postings or am I wasting my time? Question

Ok, that seems to be ok now, but I can’t see my results for today on my phone. I really don’t want to have to go to the website every time I want to check my results for the day! I recently updated to iOS 12.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Low carb bread

Hi, I also did some research into locarb bread and found that it was much higher in fat and protein and often sodium. I decided to stick with the high fibre, low GI, seed and grain rolls. (I buy mine from W'worths). They have a carb value for weight which I find helpful. I think weight gain/loss is a very complex problem and am not qualified to assist. Helen

It’s just done it again. Is it because we’ve just had an update and the app isn’t updated yet?

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Correction

Hi, I take 1 unit to bring down 3mmol. It always seems to take longer to come down from a high reading than it does to go up after having a hypo but if taking correction at mealtime you should be nearer or in target by next mealtime.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Correction

My DAFNE course workshop says 1 unit will drop BG by 2 to 3 units, but more may be required if BG over 11.

I would use that as a guide, then over time you might be able to work out what corrections work for you. Keeping good records helps (I use a spreadsheet).

I find it varies e.g. according to time of day or current BG level, and doesn't always work consistently.
During the day, 1 unit may drop BG by 2 to 3, late afternoon more like 1 to 1. I have also taken it at bedtime and BG has gone up overnight (also not taken any and BG dropped overnight by up to Cool.

Hope this helps,
J

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Low carb bread

I have been using an Aldi low carb bread that has for two slices five carbs. I was finding that my fast acting insulin instead of being lowered had to be increased to the level of having my two normal 15g of carb slices of bread. Befuddled, I asked my dietician who looked at the nutritional information and stated that the fats in the low carb bread was 12.8 and the protein 23.8 for the two slices. Could someone assist me with the question if the higher fats and protein lead to an increased insulin requirement will it also have an effect on weight gain even though it’s low carb bread?
