Topic: General Discussion / Cysts and antibiotics

Hello everyone, I've been having a right old time with cysts recently and am currently on my fourth or fifth (I've lost count) course of antibiotics. I haven't spoken to my diabetes nurse and will do tomorrow. But I just wondered: Has anyone had problems getting cysts on your skin?
The first one arrived on the top of my head a few months ago, I thought it was a spot. But it caused great pain (I think it was sebaceous), I got antibiotics and it went. Then one turned up on my nose, I thought it was a spot. But it wasn't. When it went, after antib's, It left behind a little dot and my GP diagnosed BCC (Basal Cell Carinoma). Then, that same day, I got two separate opinions from two more docs. The third said it wasn't BCC but gave me antib's for the latest infection, a blotch on my cheek which is pretty swollen. I've now been on antib's for those (a general antibiotic) since Friday and it's still kinda swollen. Meanwhile, I've been trying as hard as I can to keep my bloods controlled. It's obviously important as hell that I do and I now appreciate how much. But has anyone had a similar thing?
I have basic private health insurance and was just speaking to yet another GP this evening who told me what I have sounds like I need an antibiotic specifically for my skin (yikes, I didn't know such a thing existed). Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Gareth

Topic: General Discussion / Meter strip top-up query

I currently use an Optium Xceed. One of the main reasons is that I can "top-up" the strip with more blood if I don't get enough on the first attempt. This happens quite frequently.

At my last clinic, I got a Optium Neo, which doesn't seem to allow this "top-up", nor does my Aviva Xpert. The Neo allows the clinic to upload all my readings to Diasend.

Does anyone know of a newer meter which allows blood top-ups, and is also compatible with Diasend?

Topic: General Discussion / low bg warning signs gone

This can often happen when control is really good.....

However, as a DAFNE graduate, you now have the ability to adjust your target ranges without any difficulty.

So it will just be a case of adjusting your target range, which will in turn effect your dose calculations.......if you are on target all the time before a meal, then you may need to tweak your insulin/carb ratio in order to keep you a mmol or two above normal...

Topic: General Discussion / Four O'clock Follies (or why does my BG fall off a cliff at 4pm)

Yeah, I was on 2:1 and I'm having to bring it up to 3:1 just to keep stable... I used to be on 1:1 so this is all new and feels like SO much insulin

That's what my consultant recommended as well - I've already dropped daytime BI by 2 and dropped lunch CP ratio from 5:2 to 9:4 and now 3:2. I will start to look at a 7:4 ratio.....

I have this same problem, it's strange Sad I think it is CP ratios though.

Sorry to be so tardy in my reply. Dropping BI, CP ratio and injecting half hour before eating have solved this - or reduced it to a degree that its effect is negligible.

Topic: General Discussion / low bg warning signs gone

After DAFNE (late last year) my low BG warning signs got minimal (2.8 with no main symptoms) because my nervous system got used to well-controlled BGs, and now I'm in anxiety about it. Irony is the stress is causing high BGs.

Anyone else had this problem?

I'm thinking I'l have to go back to pre-DAFNE control to restore the alarm, or at least some of it. It's not as if I deliberately try to keep things tight, it was just that DAFNE works.

Nice. Experimentation is a good thing with T1D. Smile

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Splitting the bolus for fatty foods

Thanks for your reply! I actually eat quite a lot of vegetarian meals myself and have noticed that effect with those high fibre foods too, particularly barley which always used to lead to hypos!

I am on fast acting insulin, Novorapid, and Lantus, which lasts for 24 hours and I can't see my GP prescribing a third one unfortunately!

I guess I'll just have to keep experimenting but I am getting there! :-)

I'm vegetarian, but I find that foods like lentils, chick peas and beans have a really low GI, and can spike my BGLs for hours afterwards. When I eat these, I inject Humalog NPH which has a much longer tail than my regular Humalog. There is hopefully a section in your manual about the different profiles of insulin or you could use this link as a guide to find an insulin that may be better for you when eating fatty foods. https://www.healthxchange.sg/diabetes/essential-guide-diabetes/diabetes-types-insulin-action-profiles It is a little inconvenient to have another pen, but it does tend to make my BGLs much flatter than if I try to split my dose.

Novo Nordisk make a similar pen - the Novopen Echo - https://www.novonordisk.com/patients/diabetes-care/pens--needles-and-injection-support/NovoPenEcho.html or https://www.novologpro.com/prescribing/insulin-pens/novopen-echo.html

Topic: General Discussion / Four O'clock Follies (or why does my BG fall off a cliff at 4pm)

Can you please share your DAFNE diary with this thread? (Select dates in the "Include my Blood Glucose Diary entries between" section below). In the diary also include anything relevant such as exercise, times of stress, or when stress is released. We then have a better idea of your doses, when they occur and can make better suggestions. Otherwise it is just too vague. Thanks.

Dear Assembled Pancreatic-ally Challenged,

As DAFNE-ilise by CP ratios and tweak my BI levels, as I've got my BG levels back to "my feet won't fall off" levels I've noticed a strange problem, my BG levels really start to drop at around 4pm. I can see from my Libre that everything is stable up to them, then it falls off a cliff (a 2m/mol drop in an hour).

Any one got any bright ideas as to why it might be happening? And solutions (ideally ones that don't involve a new regular 4pm Krispy Kreme)

thanks, all

Andy

Topic: General Discussion / Effects of stress on blood glucose levels

Never managed to find a decent solution to the stress problem, besides asking work for reasonable adjustments as part of my rights under the disability act. The best thing I ever did to be frank - quality of life greatly improved. Work is never worth your health and wellbeing so you're well within your rights to ask for help if you need it.

The battery in my Humapen Memoir pen has finally expired. I understand that Lilly no longer make them. Is there anything similar that will display the date and time and dosage of injections?

Topic: General Discussion / Product Recall ACCU-CHEK Aviva test strips

Hi Sue,
I surely hope your dire situation is resolved satisfactorily. If they are having a recall of strips for the Aviva that you rely on for medicinal quantifications to inject insulin the company must have an ethical stance to supply you with replacement strips to use. In Australia the glucometers are only given out by hospitals with specialists recommendations so the strips and machines even take on more significance for your health. In the past, I have found the service desk at Accucheck helpful and willing to exchange my Aviva strips and glucometers after discussion. However it has not been a mass recall. Give them an email to get replacement strips when returning your other suspect ones.
Furthering the discussion on Aviva strips I have always found up to 3 to 5 strips in every packet stuffs up. I used to think due to the government subs on the strips that it didn’t matter much yet it is 10% of every 50 strip packet that is useless. Not good enough so I have been ring up the company and getting replacements. I wouldn’t want to be on my last strip in the community that doesn’t work! Is it the usual practice with large multinationals that we never really seem to get the full picture? Have any other DAFNE users had the same problems with their strips?

Topic: General Discussion / Product Recall ACCU-CHEK Aviva test strips

Has anyone else been left without any test strips as a result of the recent ACCU-CHEK Aviva test strips product recall?
I was notified at 5.58pm on Friday about the recall. All my test strips were from an offending Lot. I was left in a very difficult situation.

They did mention the subject very briefly in our Libre familiarisation talk but I think I'll take your advice as I was all over the place a couple of days ago when I tried 50/50! :-(
