Topic: General Discussion / Weight loss ?

Apple and LadyNovo, that is really interesting because I was the same, I used to feel so weak and confused when I got a hypo that I would just shovel chocolate biscuits into me for about 5 mins until I felt some semblance of normality again. I never thought that doing that maybe once a week would make me put on weight.

I did DAFNE in January, but I have not noticed much reduction in weight. My ratios have increased since DAFNE, so I am taking MORE insulin - less Lantus but more Novorapid.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Nuts!

Very interesting. I have also had some high BG readings after eating dry roasted peanuts. What would you say is "a significant load" as the CPs in nuts isn't that high compared to the rise in BG.

Topic: Site Development / Graphs of all values vs time, rather than trends

I use an Abbott Optium Xceed meter and their software system Co-Pilot gives you a modal day graph of results based on time of day. Their old software - which I have forgotten the name of - had the ability to create more than a dozen graph types. The current system has been perhaps been over-simplified, but there are 4 graph types available as well as combined display types. Many meter suppliers are going this way now and if you can choose a meter with the right software it may be able to give you just what you need. Some internet research may show you what is out there.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Updated iPod App issue

Hi,

I've only been using the App (iPhone) for a few days and am finding it very useful to record my results/carbs/insulin in one place.

However I've just looked into the forum to enquire about 'overiding' autocalculations just as Mark has posted. Tonight my BG was slightly high and required a small correction dose, which was all calculated and recorded fine, but I did another check an hour or so later and while my BG had begun to reduce the autocalculate recorded/suggested another dose of QA insulin (which wasn't required).

To work around this I had to disable the 'Auto-calculate QA' option, amend the dose to 0+0, re-save and then re-enable autocalculate.

I also use whole units so also agree being able to select a dose increment value or set a user chosen round up/down value would be very useful.

Hope this can be fixed soon.

Cheers,
James

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Updated iPod App issue

I love the iPod App but the latest update has made the auto calculations unusable as I can no longer override the calculated value.
The update is taken but when I save the record it reverts to the calculated value.
Aside from the obvious this is poor because the App rounds to the nearest 0.5 units. I use whole units so so a value of 6.5 is no use to me.
Can we please have a setting that lets us specify the smallest units we inject (0.5 or 1.0)?
i'd hate to have to turn auto calculations off because of the latest changes.

Topic: Site Development / Auto calculate QA from BG - let's get it right

Hi! I have downloaded the latest update for my Ipod. Yesterday I was 4.2 before my lunch which is below target. I had 6 CP's and the calculation said "BG:4.2 CP: 6, QA:CP ratio: 1:1, Target range: 4.5-8.0, QA for CPs: 6"
Then.... Target: 6.2 (50% of range), BG minus target = -2.1, Calculation method: Simple, QA:BG ratio: 3.0, CORRECTIVE QA: -1
However, when I tried to enter the -1 in the QA dose (as it didn't put it in automatically as I'd thought it would) as soon as I tried to save it the dosage went straight back to 6 without the -1. Is this a problem with the app or am I doing something wrong? I had a similar problem with my evening meal. As I don't have a half unit pen I round up my doses. The calculated dose was 13.5 + 1, so I tried to round this up to 14 + 1, and again, as soon as I tried to save it it reverted to 13.5+1. I tried to solve this by changing it to 13.5+1.5 but it wouldn't accept this either. HELP!

Topic: General Discussion / Weight loss ?

Hi! I used to be the same when I had hypos - resolved by excessive, chocolate, cake, biscuits etc (which I knew had a very high fat content). Since being on the DAFNE regime I now take less insulin but if I have a hypo I now take some Lzade followed by 1 or sometimes 2 CPs of a more healty variety. I have lost 18lbs in weight since March. For me it was a mixture of both the reduction in insulin and the way I now treat hypos

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Long Acting Insulin

Because QA is for a completely different purpose than BI. The QA covers the period that your body is digesting your meal after which your body requires insulin to cover the background sugar requirements. The BI is for this period. What happens if you don't eat anything for 6 hours ? Your 2 - 5 hour insulin is all gone but your body needs insulin. Our QA dose is based on the carbs for the meal not our background needs.
The reason for splitting the humilin is beyond me as I'm not a HCP. I split Levemir because it doesn't last 24 hours so I need 2 doses to cover 24 hours but humilin will have a different profile so I'm not sure if the same issues apply.

Topic: General Discussion / Weight loss ?

Hi! Before the DAFNE course, if I had a hypo I would massively overdose on chocolate, biscuits, etc. which was obviously the completely wrong hypo treatment. At my DAFNE course, I was told that because I now treat a hypo with just a fast acting carbohydrate, that my weight would become lower due to not overeating every time I had a hypo.

I have noticed a small weight loss since the DAFNE course - probably because of the new, more effective way of treating hypos.

Could this possibly be the same as with you?

Hi, I had a set of dog tags made (although slightly primitive) they totalled less than £5 on Ebay, and they have a sink plug type chain which is virtually unbreakable. They are great and worth a try.

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise and high BG

Thanks so much for these posts! I'd forgotten all about that as I did the DAFNE course about 5 years ago and haven't really exercised much since. I hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary happening after a bit of a run and sone gym work, but this evening I did a high intensity workout, combining weights, cardio and abs work, and my BG levels shot up. I was worried about it but I feel reassured after reading those posts!

Topic: General Discussion / Medical Bracelet

Hi, I've got a Medic Alert tag, which I put on a prettier chain I found in a jewellers so it doesn't look like anything other than a normal bracelet. Theirs are quite clever, because you can register all your details with them (right down to insulin quantities), and the tag itself gives the phone number, your personal ID, and the condition in question (ie. Insulin Dependent Diabetes in my case). I would go for something with the snake symbol as apparently paramedics are more alert to looking for this for clues in an emergency.

Topic: General Discussion / Before Dinner Reading

Thanks for that. I can't think of anything that I'm doing differently on the days that I'm higher at dinner time, my days are pretty routine with each day at work being really similar in terms of physical activity (in that I sit at a desk all day). I have noticed that my BG rises when I feel stressed at work but I can't see any real pattern with that either- unless I'm maybe actually more stressed than I realise some days.

Is there anything you particularly do before each random BG incident, or are most days the same/routine?
Glad to see you're almost there though with the doses. Well done. Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Before Dinner Reading

Hello,

I'd be grateful for some advice. I'm generally pretty pleased with the ratios that I use for my QA throughout the day but I can't seem to get my before dinner readings sorted, I am often too high at dinner time but can also be randomly pretty low or ok so find it hard to work out a pattern or to be confident in increasing my lunch time ratio. My night time readings are also randomly too high, low or ok after I have corrected for my higher pre dinner readings (despite me using the same ratios each time for the corrections). My diabetes clinic suggested that I try splitting my BI dose (and taking half at lunchtimes) as maybe it is running out by dinner time but this wouldn't help with the randomness of the ok and lower readings that I can also get at this time (also, my BI is really small at 5 units as it is). Can anyone think what I'm doing wrong, I'd love to be able to get the dinner time readings right. Thanks.

Topic: Site Development / Graphs of all values vs time, rather than trends

Hi,
I know this may go against the “DAFNE Principles” of dividing the day into sections by mealtime & bed, however would it be possible to have graphs that displayed all tests throughout the day by time recorded, rather than by meal time? This could either be by a scatter graph, or showing lines linking results from each day.
Ie. x = time, 24 hour; y = BG

Multiple days can then be overlapped to show when seemingling random highs or lows correlate - particularly between meals – making it clearer if ratios for certain meals need to be adjusted. The current graphs are great for showing general trends, but take the presumption that my BGs follow a lovely straight line between each meal; whilst I would love for this to be true, I know it’s not!

My first consultant after I was diagnosed (a diabetes-specialist paediatrician from South Africa, based in North Yorkshire, who was absolutely brilliant) used to generate scatter graphs based on the readings downloaded from my meter over the past month(s), and it showed so many things that you wouldn’t notice from a list of results.
I’ve tried this myself using results exported into Excel, and it does work, but is a bit more time consuming. Would love to know what others think of this idea?

Its working now, I just changed one thing at a time, exited, then returned and it was saved, thanks......

I was 8.2 before lunch, yet it didn't offer a correction, which for me would be 1, as it falls under 10mmol/l and therefore 1 unit drops by 2.5mmol/l. The calculation process shows that I need to come down by 2.4 to reach my target, so less than my correction will drop me.

Is this why its not giving me a correction?

Would I need to adjust my target..........

P.S. I did adjust Range target to 40% instead of 50%, and it gave me my unit........

I'm happy....... Cool

I found my targets of 5.5 to 7.5 it was aiming at 6.5 which is fine, but I was 12.3 and 2:1 would normally correct @ 3Units, but it suggested 2 as needed to drop 5.8 to get to 6.5, changed target range - 5.5 to 7 it calc'd 3 correction then.

I would lower some of the upper targets or the 50% target range, maybe 40%

Yep Nova, same thing for me originally, it seems to save from the second time onwards. Same thing happens when adding custom foods, it seems to fail to save the initial creation detail.

Hmm it seems I should've given the app to you guys to break before releasing on the app store Wink

Seriously though, thanks for reporting the issues, I'll try and fix them over the weekend. It seems I've made it a bit over zealous with the amount of times it recalculates things so will reduce that too.

On the topic of storing default ratios, as you've already said you can enter these on the settings tab. These are linked to the entry types, so you can specify different ratios for each of your meals. When you create/update an entry, the ratio is looked up from the entry type. This lookup happens when you first add an entry and also whenever you update the entry type, so if you manually enter a ratio then change the type this might overwrite your first ratio.

Hope this helps clear things up.

Going back to the remembering of ratios etc, when you go into settings>specify targets in order to change your BG targets and mealtime ratios, you hit done when finished and exit back out, when I go back in my previous changes are gone.....

Anyone else.....?

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Long Acting Insulin

Hi,
I have a question for an HCP. When I was diagnosed type 1 in 1994 I was put on a Humilin Soluble/isophane mix twice a day.
Then in 1996 I was put on this great new quick acting insulin which gives greater control, Humalog. Told to take that before every meal and to only take my long acting, Humilin Isophane (BI) at dinnertime. Which I have done for the past 16 years.
Now after doing the DAFNE Course I am told to take my BI twice a day, why? If QA lasts 2 - 5 hrs why do I still need BI for during the day?

Regards
Derek

Bug
On save of the diary entry QA is recalculated even after a manual override of the QA figures. Eg when we edit to round the .5s, on save, that edit is lost.
