As am continunally learning and am a baby compared to some of you.

JWo, can't wait for you to know more about the motion sickness, has I sometimes feel sick-??

NIght and have a good day everyone!

Novorapidboi, I must admit that's what I thought...that as it is absorbed slowly, as long as the site is not lumpy then it shouldn't matter where...

Topic: Questions for HCPs / time change of BI

Only thing I can think of at the moment is, what happens if you put your evening dose down now you've changed the dose taking time?
Will you wake up high like before?

If you can, use the BG diary feature on this site to post your BG results in the thread. Sometimes it can be other factors - especially if you're an active person.

Take care. I hope the hypos stop for you soon so you can get a good night's sleep again. Sad

Topic: Questions for HCPs / time change of BI

Have been taking Humulin I since diagnosis, (over 12yrs ago) at bedtime. Over the years the dosage increased ending up taking around 35-37 units each night. A year ago i did the DAFNE course and it was suggested that i split my dosage to 18unit in the morning and 18 at night as my BG was quite often high before dinner. This seemed to be working fine but i did begtin to notice that my BG would quite often double over night. I could go to bed at anything between 6 and 8 but would wake up 12+. This wouldn't happen all the time. When i mentioned this at my most recent clinic appointment my doctor suggested i bring my bedtime injection forward and do at dinner time. Since doing this i am having hypos more regularly in the middle of the night, this week 2 nights in a row around 1am. If i'm reading the graph right for insulin activity i should be getting the biggest hit after 4-6hrs of taking which would be around the 1am mark for when i'm taking it. i am thinking of going back to taking it at bedtime. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Topic: General Discussion / Blood Testing Meters

We got given Accu-check mobiles at the DAFNE course I did in May this year. We were warned that there were serious question marks over their accuracy and to use with caution.

They are truly a convenient design and that is the only reason I have persevered with it til now.

Unfortunately I have to accept defeat and relegate it to the annals of my diabetes history. Even after isolating it from light source contamination it is inaccurate by not a small amount. At least 20% wrong on low and high readings (consistantly). Reasonably accurate for in target readings however. It is prone to completely spurious readings every now and then eg today after my bike ride I tested 2 different fingers twice and got readings between 9.1 and 11.6 meaning my BS had not dropped at all during the ride hence the multiple testing. Just before I was about to decide to do a +6 for lunch I retested from the same sample points with my Exced, 6.0 on both attempts!

I wanted it to work for me but its testing technology is ancient & simply not up to modern day standards!

It gets 10 out of 10 for design and convenience and 1 out of 10 for result trust from me.
I would warn against using it if anyone asked me.

I should have added that conversely to estimate an upcoming hba1c one would look at your own average over the preceding 3 months add 6 then divide by 2. Obviously the more reading you take the more closely I'd expect the answer to match the real result.

Topic: General Discussion / how to test

you want to miss a meal ideally, but if not, have a carb free meal, then test your BG every hour for the next 5 hours, this means that the only insulin in your system will be your Lantus, if its held steady (within 1-2mmol/l) then its working, if it goes up, more insulin is needed, goes down, less insulin is needed........

you should repeat the test for 3 days, at different times for a better picture, in order to make sure any adjustment is actually needed................and remember, Lantus takes a few days to start working after adjustment....

good luck..... Wink

Topic: Questions for HCPs / QA and BI preferred injection sites

Thanks for that...............

I would like to see if there is any evidence to suggest keeping BI in the same area is in fact more consistent/manageable.........purely as for me personally my injecting BI anywhere is working.......... Very Happy

Topic: General Discussion / Injection sites

I mentioned in the other thread that I inject my BI anywhere as its been designed to be absorbed slowly, so wont be effected by how quickly each specific areas responds.........but I have still to check the thread where I asked for HCP opinion............

Topic: General Discussion / changing to levemir- advice please

I take mine at 6:30am and 9:30pm, so about a 15 hour split, its meant to last 12 - 18 hours, so it must do so for me, but might not for others.............

I take it later in order to give me more BI in my system at the time of the dreaded Dawn Phenomenon, which for me is bout 4:30 - 5:00 am.......

I would start with a 12 hour split, or breakfast and dinner kinda thing, see how it goes, then move it to later if its more convenient and record the results.......you might find it starts to run out at 8.30pm, or has depleted completely by then, in which case having it earlier or compensating with dinner QA will be needed..... Very Happy

Topic: General Discussion / Is Hba1c related to the averages in blood glucose diaries

The formula I use to estimate HbA1c is HbA1c = 90Day Average + 2.52 / 1.583.............

Can I explain why its that? No?

But its online somewhere and came from a study...........

It has never been bang on for me though, I suppose it never can be........

Topic: General Discussion / Is Hba1c related to the averages in blood glucose diaries

Gleaned it from a magazine article early this year. I actually took it up with me to the DAFNE course to confirm. The 'professor' actually knew the author of the article and did not doubt the simple formula would give a reasonable estimate of average.

Thanks Michelle. I have been looking online and the general consensus seems to be that everyone is different so I will just have to give it a go and see what happens.

Topic: General Discussion / changing to levemir- advice please

Hi Ruth

I currently use levemir: 8.30 am and 8.30 pm, they say that lasts around 16 hrs however tends to taper off at around 12. I found that the 12 hr works for me and if I've accidentally forgot and took later than 8.30 pm then it tends to raise my BGs slightly (not greatly) I was in dafne course last week and this question arose. They said that you can take within an hour of the 12 hr Interval and it shouldn't affect BGs that much. I would just try the 6 pm after dinner and experiment, you may have a little overlap there and then you may find it may be fine. Log your results too see what effect it has over a few days due to the switch off insulin also etc

Topic: General Discussion / changing to levemir- advice please

I am shortly going to be changing from Lantus to Levemir. I will be splitting my dose. Can anyone suggest what the best times are to take it? I usually eat breakfast at 8 and my evening meal at 6. I've been told that I should try to keep 12 hours between doses. Does that mean it would not work to take my evening dose along with dinner at 6 - do I need to wait until 8? Or do I have to waken at 6 AM and take the morning dose to fit in with my 6pm dinner? Any advice would be welcome please.

Wow - Rich!, that's a high one!..but at least it's decreased nicely now Laughing

Thank you, after diagnosis where my hba1c was 125 2 months ago I had another test just before dafne two weeks ago which was 95 that equals around 10.5 as your previous result so it's coming down slowly. Fingers crossed for sept test Very Happy

Cheers Guys

If you still get the old % figure (we get both here in AU) I know you can calculate it by taking your HbA1c % double it then minus 6 from the result, will convert it to average BS we read off the meters.

eg me now 6.4hbA1c x 2 -6 = 6.8 - Which equates nicely with my diary.
me last Nov 10.5hbA1c x 2 - 6 =15 - GP kicked my arse, told me to fix myself pronto Embarassed

Topic: General Discussion / hungover feeling in the morning (not after drinking)

Can you post some diary results using this site's diary feature?
You may be looking at a dawn phenomenon issue, but it's difficult to tell for sure from what you've described.
Take care.
