Topic: General Discussion / Let's hear your story!

pfordmartin said:
Hello everyone. I am a freelance writer working on a feature piece about DAFNE for JDRF’s Countdown magazine. I’m looking for a few DAFNE participant stories to share in the piece. I’d greatly appreciate you sharing your experiences to help our US readers learn more about this program. You can either post to this thread or private message me. Following is an idea of what I'm looking for...you can contribute as much or as little as you'd like:

When did you take the course?
Hi Took the course in September of this year (2012). Have recently decided to go back to the insulin that I was on before. Had enough of the side effects - not sleeping, excessive skin loss in mouth, dry mouth, itchy skin and painful joints. Hospital wanted to change basal but I have had enough. May try again later.
What was your favorite aspect of it? Overall impressions (good and bad)?

How was your control after completing DAFNE?

If it’s been some time since you finished DAFNE, how is your control today?

Do you use the DAFNE Online site and tools frequently? How do they help (or not)?

And anything else you think is worth sharing!

Thanks in advance for your contributions. I’m looking forward to hearing your stories!

Best,
Paula Ford-Martn

Arrow EDIT: If you'd also like to share your diagnosis date and what brought you to DAFNE (how you were doing with diabetes control before the course), I'd love to hear about that too.

Just finished the 'The Girl' Series (With the Dragon Tattoo/Who Played With Fire/Who Kicked The Hornets nest). I'm not normally a reader but these has me engrossed!

After years of thinking of reading these I got round to it. SO glad I did. Did not think much of the Daniel Craig movie version. Am going to watch the original version when my son brings it home from squaddie camp.

Refuse to have it. Had 2 several years apart and was generally unwell for 8 months plus. Would rather have flu than suffer.

Hi, everyone.

Just an update. I'm over the illness and the readings for the last week have been brilliant. How different from two weeks ago.

I really appreciate all the comments and support.

I didn't say either because post-cooked weight isn't as reliable as pre-cooked.... Hence the explanation about water shifting the weight. :/

How long it was cooked for would matter a great deal really, especially with water absorbing foods.

never heard of this but from reading Wikipedia, it seems that it can be quite effective in weight management and getting some muscle on the go.......... Smile

However it did mention insulin resistance being a side effect, in obese non diabetic, and therefore causing diabetes, likely type 2, so from that information it might suggest that it would increase your resistance to insulin, making your exercise regime a lot harder to manage and pushing your insulin doses up, which would be defeating the purpose of the exercise and the CLA..........

I think though it would be a case of trial and error, so start of on a low dose of the CLA and see what it does to you blood sugars, then weigh up [excuse the PUN] the PROS and CONS......

Topic: General Discussion / Cant get stable!!

when a change in background insulin takes place and a new job, which is physical from your description, it will require you to test your basal [levemir] again. So if it was me, I would start with the overnight dose..............go carb free/miss meals so your blood sugars have no outside influence from glucose or insulin.............repeat it a few times to confirm the numbers then make the necessary changes.........

once right, move on to your daytime dose......when these are both right, or near enough there, your QA adjustments should start to mean something meaningful......

as Alan suggested if you can get some BG entries up from the last three days at least you could get some suggestions from the forum......

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carbohydrates help needed - ASDA Ready Sliced Tiger Chest

Hi Whiskysmum,

As a rule of thumb, for most breads 100g contains around 4.5 CPs (45% if you can work with the maths), so best bet is to weigh a slice; if it's say 50g that would be 2 CPs

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / pasta counting

Hi Paulj

JWo is right, it's about going off EITHER the dry (uncooked) value, OR the cooked value.

For example, pasta is approx 70g (7 CP) per 100g dried, but 30g (3 CP) per 100g cooked. So if your 220g was dry pasta that would be around 15.5 CPs. However, if the 220g was the cooked weight, that's only around 7 CPs.

Hope this helps?

Carolin

Topic: Site Development / Different "Snacks" for different times of day

I wonder if anyone else is interested in this

Is it possible to have different "Snacks" such as:- 1000hrs, 1500hrs, 1800hrs and 2200hrs as my ratio varies throughout the day. A 1000hr snack is 1.5:1 but 1800hr is 3:1

At the moment I just manually enter the value of the units

Lovely App and very very useful, impresses my GP !!

Did you get the weight before it was cooked or after?

Pasta is one of the foods where the CP amount changes due to water being absorbed... The best thing to do is get the pre-cooked/raw weight and then you know for sure what you're working with before the weight shift.

Other foods like this to watch out for are jacket potatoes (tend to lose water) and rice (tends to gain water). I'm sure others can think of more to be wary of. Smile

Best wishes!

i had 220 grams of pasta last night with my spaghetti bolognaise and with being on a one to one ratio for my CP S injected 22 units of quick acting insulin for the totral meal consumed (including pudding) the pack of pasta said it was 78carbs per 100 grams consumed. one and a half hours later my blood level was 3.4 and i had a hypo. anyone got any thoughts on the above?

i have just finished a DAFNE course last week and look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested in the future

cheers

Hello Mike
If you keep an online Blood Glucose Diary on this site, include the entries for the last week or so, so that we can make comments and suggestions for improvements. This facility is just underneath the 'POST REPLY' box.

Topic: General Discussion / new meter

My own conclusions were reached finaly on a side by side comparison with the another meter (Optium Exceed- now called freestyle exceed), as it became more apparent it was prone to spurious reading I found myself more & more, testing with the 2 meters for safety.

From the same sample area the exceed would read the same result consistantly, the Mobile would vary and hardly ever agree with the exceed (especially outside of normal target range). I may be wrong but the testing solutions for meters give test results in the target range which is indeed where I found the mobile to be the most accurate.

It remminded me very much of the the very first meter I had (early 90s) in terms of varing results. I believe it's because it uses the older type light technology to analyse the sample rather than the newer method which looks at electron flow (non technical description).

When I compare my Exceed to my Hospital's, calibrated daily, meter it is always within 0.1 mmol/L.

It's entirely posible I had a faulty one, but the meer fact that it came with a warning to be cautious with it's results from my HCPs, does not help it's cause.

Like LadyNovo777 I'm sure I was told the pneumococcal was "once a lifetime" vaccine. Had mine several years ago, and has never been discussed with the Dr. again since.

Mines booked for Monday afternoon 15th October. After it i usually get a red patch on my arm, warm to the touch & the area sewlls up like a balloon for a couple of days Sad

I also thought the pneumonia vaccine was a 'one off'.
