Topic: General Discussion / Changing from Lantus to Levemir Hi Davey-M, welcome to the forums. Are you seeing any patterns in the timings of the hypos? If you have other factors to consider (like the exercise/alcohol) then it can make it very difficult to determine what is the cause of the hypos. If you have applied DAFNE rules to those things then this will help. In case you don't already, be sure to make sure you're not hypoing over night by doing the 3am test. Now, fact of the matter is, insulins can work differently for everyone (from the sounds of things, you've tried to do a bit a research). You may find that you're more sensitive to levemir compared to lantus and this may mean you'll need to start lower your doses. If you wanted someone to compare to, I'm also on Levemir and I take a split of 15/15 (morn/even) currently... however, I know that this still isn't quite right for me yet (I hypo'd at 3am last night so planning to try 15/14 today). I used to hypo like crazy on lantus and it's why they suggested I change to levemir (on that note, I eventually learned that I'm fairly insulin sensitive generally - 1QA of humalog makes me drop my 6BG! - keep an eye out for this too perhaps?). Best wishes with the change. I know it can be a difficult time but you'll get there. |

I used to have a split dosage of lantus, with my BGs normally around the 7 or 8 mark. Yesterday morning I switched to Levemir and have had loads of hypos since. There could be other reasons for the hypos (exercise, morning after drinking alcohol) but am I right in saying that because lantus takes two days to take any effect, and levemir works straight away, for the next two days ive effectively got 2 background insulins inside me? Can I expect my readings to calm down in a day or two? Any advice appreciated |

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Correction Doses Just wondered what anybody thinks of these correction doses whch my GP gave me sometime ago. Do you think they should be higher amounts of insulin? If B/S (pre meal) is >(greater than) 12 >12 to >15 = 2 extra units >15 to >20 = 4 extra units >20 to >25 = 6 extra units >25 + = 6 extra units but check again after 1 - 1 1/2 hrs if still >20 give further 4 units |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / pasta counting Update: it tastes like nothing but it looks enough like spaghetti on the plate and judging by BGs it was carb free. I also think it fills you up.Helen |

Topic: Site Development / Injection site list Totally agree, would be really useful for me to record BI and QA locations separately yet keep the QA and BI data on the same line for neatness when scrolling through entries.I'm not so fussed about the left/right buttocks (aahh, I like doing my BI dose as ticking 'buttocks' always makes me snigger like a little child!) as I can only reach my right so know 'buttocks' means 'right buttock' for me - but had been wondering why it was recorded as only one. Should be a simple fix? I'm finishing my DAFNE course tomorrow so have only been using the android app for 3 days (didn't find it till day 2) but it seems really good and I was totally flabbergasted this was just created by 'mere diabetic mortals' in their spare time. Thank you v.v.v.v.v.much! Has made my bag so much lighter without having to carry two different books around. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Problems uploading I get the error message "Operation failed with unexpected server response: code=302 reason=Moved Temporarily detail=." Any ideas as to what that means? It's not every entry that happens for so my online diary looks patchy. (Only started using this week on DAFNE course) |

Topic: General Discussion / Flu Jabs I've never become seriously ill from my flu jabs though I certainly have some signs that my immune system is attacking it when I do have it (aching arm for example which is a good sign that the jab is encouraging your immune system to get stronger).I bet a good chunk of the "becoming ill after a flu jab" is being caused by your immune system being distracted from something alive that you weren't aware of before the jab considering it's just a dead sample being injected... Good ol' funny bodies eh! |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / pasta counting On the subject of pasta...my d-i-l picked up some "Slim Pasta" for me. It is made from Konjar (?) and has no carbs! It does have "energy" of 47 kj for 100g and a ton of fibre. i have not tasted it but she has fed it to the kids with good results. She did say you needed a flavoursome sauce to stir through but that it was quite good. Anyone heard of i?. Easily purchased here at Woolworths! |

Topic: General Discussion / What are you reading?
After years of thinking of reading these I got round to it. SO glad I did. Did not think much of the Daniel Craig movie version. Am going to watch the original version when my son brings it home from squaddie camp. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / pasta counting I didn't say either because post-cooked weight isn't as reliable as pre-cooked.... Hence the explanation about water shifting the weight. :/How long it was cooked for would matter a great deal really, especially with water absorbing foods. |

Topic: Questions ? / cla? never heard of this but from reading Wikipedia, it seems that it can be quite effective in weight management and getting some muscle on the go..........However it did mention insulin resistance being a side effect, in obese non diabetic, and therefore causing diabetes, likely type 2, so from that information it might suggest that it would increase your resistance to insulin, making your exercise regime a lot harder to manage and pushing your insulin doses up, which would be defeating the purpose of the exercise and the CLA.......... I think though it would be a case of trial and error, so start of on a low dose of the CLA and see what it does to you blood sugars, then weigh up [excuse the PUN] the PROS and CONS...... |

Topic: General Discussion / Cant get stable!! when a change in background insulin takes place and a new job, which is physical from your description, it will require you to test your basal [levemir] again. So if it was me, I would start with the overnight dose..............go carb free/miss meals so your blood sugars have no outside influence from glucose or insulin.............repeat it a few times to confirm the numbers then make the necessary changes.........once right, move on to your daytime dose......when these are both right, or near enough there, your QA adjustments should start to mean something meaningful...... as Alan suggested if you can get some BG entries up from the last three days at least you could get some suggestions from the forum...... |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carbohydrates help needed - ASDA Ready Sliced Tiger Chest Hi Whiskysmum,As a rule of thumb, for most breads 100g contains around 4.5 CPs (45% if you can work with the maths), so best bet is to weigh a slice; if it's say 50g that would be 2 CPs Carolin |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / pasta counting Hi PauljJWo is right, it's about going off EITHER the dry (uncooked) value, OR the cooked value. For example, pasta is approx 70g (7 CP) per 100g dried, but 30g (3 CP) per 100g cooked. So if your 220g was dry pasta that would be around 15.5 CPs. However, if the 220g was the cooked weight, that's only around 7 CPs. Hope this helps? Carolin |
