the laws about driving a bus whilst being on insulin have just recently changed in november 2011. if you move on to insulin you automatically get your licence suspended for 4 months for reports and 3 months of blood glucose readings.hopefully at the end of this if you have managed to jump through all the hoops successfully you get your bus licence reinstated.you are still allowed in the meantime to drive a car as normal

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / New food labelling

I see that they are going to bring in uniform food labelling. However from what I've seen on the news, they only seem to mention calories, fat, sugar, salt. I assume carbohydrates are going to be mentioned. Apparently Diabetes UK has been liaised with so I would think so. What they really need to do for diabetics is to include the carb value for "per pack" and "per bar" , "per biscuit" etc etc. I know the maths may not be that hard but for example on some things it will give the carb value "per 100g", then you see that the total weight is 154g or 176g. I could understand that on something like a powder or liquied but why do that on something like a sandwich?! Let's hope this new labelling is clear.

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin pump

Hi all, well I finally get my insulin pump on the 9th november. I went just for a quick chat today before the big induction day, and I have to say I feel quite scared. Everything I know with injections is going to change..can't really explain it to be honest.

I certainly didn't think you could fly a plane, a passenger carrying one at least...

You can now get a PPL in the UK as a type 1 - some hoops to go through but not insurmountable, the only problem is, is that as a t1, you will always need to have a fully qualified non diabetic with you - just in case!, and that, for me, just takes away some of the fun.

I don't think a t1 can fly commercial planes in the UK, but in the US you can - as long as they don't fly international.

There have been some rule changes re bus - PSV and lorry - HGV licences, and, we can apply, but we will have to show at least 3 months worth of continuous testing to the GP that signs it off and the results show you are well controlled, you have had no episodes of a severe hypo - ie requiring anothers help and you have good warning signs.

I was given a leaflet by my GP at my 6 monthly check up, and I researched getting a PPL about 4 years ago, but didn't go through with it as the lessons a still too expensive, even with a mate giving the lessons.

Topic: General Discussion / Centre Code

You can't get upgraded to DUAG that is something different. You can get upgraded to 'graduate' status with a centre code. To obtain a centre code you can either contact the DAFNE Centre to
obtain the current code or email us via the 'Contact DAFNE Online' link at the bottom of the page. Just tell us which centre you attended and we can contact DAFNE Central to get you verified
as a graduate and either upograde your account or give you a code to do it yourself.

I think you'll find that that is no longer true novorapidboi. I'm sure they changed the rules, partly as a result of the BDA's representations. If you can fly a plane as a diabetic, as you can, then surely you can drive a bus.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / readings gone! :(

Sarah, I have gone back through our logs to 12-Aug-2012 and can find no connections from you at all. This means that your Android app was not syncing to the website. That is why the entries are not on the site. When was the last time you checked the entries on the site before today ? We would like to help but if the entries never reached the site there is not much we can do. I will raise the issue with the developer to see if he has any suggestions but if they were only on the
phone and the phone is not backed up it could be a bit tricky.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / readings gone! :(

I had my clinic appointment today & when I went to show the consultant my readings (on my android phone) they seem to have disappeared, I've only got the last 2 weeks. They've also gone from my online account. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone know how or if I can get them back??? Not been great at keeping a record of them & this happens when I do! Sad

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Storage in the Fridge

Yes it does.
Top can be 3° C warmer than the bottom of the fridge.
I keep my insulin in a tray at the top of the door.

Does it matter where it is, I thought the temperature would stay the same top, middle or bottom if you set the thermostat.

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Correction Doses

I take 1 unit for every 2 mmol?
So if I was 12, I woujld take 3 extra units, if I was 20 I would take 7 extra units. It all depends on the individual as to how quickly you regain the right level, how much exercise you are going to take etc etc.

And if ill, I would go by the DAFNE sick rules.

No offence to GPs but I would rather go by what DAFNE or my diabetic nurse said, my GP wouldn't know what to suggest and refer me to my nurse.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / pasta counting

Hi Mark,

I went down to Coles (our other big supermarket) and they have a version called "Chang's Super Lo Cal" they have "wok ready noodles" and a few other varieties. They are relatively new and both Coles and Woolworths are seeing how they go. The pack I got from d-i-l looked as if it was made of konjar but the Coles pack is a little easier to read and that version is made of "konjac" a root vegetable widely used in Japan for zonks It is supposed to take on the flavours of the sauces/soup.. I would not live on it but as a substitute for pasta it is OK. It is also gluten free. They are packaged here in Australia (Glen Waverley, VIC) but it is a product of China.

www.changs.com

The woman at Coles said they thought it would be aimed at those trying to lose weight...did not know that carb value was an issue for diabetics. Advertised as having low joule, low GI and Suitable for low carb diets,
Helen

Helen, we haven't got Woolworth's in the UK any more.

They do, however, have a website at www.eatwater.co.uk, which lists the few stockists plus an online retailer.

I only take a maximum of 10 whatever the reading, then check again after a couple of hours.

OK, I might keep any highs longer, but it's easier to add more than take away!!

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Storage in the Fridge

Hi JWo,

Why do you adjust your fridge in the winter? It is controlled by a thermostat, the temperature inside will stay at whatever the thermostat is set at regardless of the temperature outside the fridge. Assuming the absence of exceptional circumstances like fires or ice-ages of course!

Kind regards,

Roger

I keep vegetables in the bottom drawers so tend to leave my insulin on the top shelf - to be honest though, I don't worry about where it is in the fridge. I have a temperature monitor too to make sure it's okay. If I'm worried, I adjust the fridge settings - like during the winter.

Topic: General Discussion / Changing from Lantus to Levemir

Hi Davey-M, welcome to the forums. Smile

Are you seeing any patterns in the timings of the hypos? If you have other factors to consider (like the exercise/alcohol) then it can make it very difficult to determine what is the cause of the hypos. If you have applied DAFNE rules to those things then this will help.

In case you don't already, be sure to make sure you're not hypoing over night by doing the 3am test.

Now, fact of the matter is, insulins can work differently for everyone (from the sounds of things, you've tried to do a bit a research). You may find that you're more sensitive to levemir compared to lantus and this may mean you'll need to start lower your doses.

If you wanted someone to compare to, I'm also on Levemir and I take a split of 15/15 (morn/even) currently... however, I know that this still isn't quite right for me yet (I hypo'd at 3am last night so planning to try 15/14 today). I used to hypo like crazy on lantus and it's why they suggested I change to levemir (on that note, I eventually learned that I'm fairly insulin sensitive generally - 1QA of humalog makes me drop my 6BG! - keep an eye out for this too perhaps?).

Best wishes with the change. I know it can be a difficult time but you'll get there. Smile
