Topic: General Discussion / new meter I was moved on to that iCare machine as well... http://www.dafneonline.co.uk/forums/1/topics/1815I don't remember the DVLA requesting to see any results when I last put my licence in for renewal. Is this a fairly new thing? I do get where you're coming from though. Makes me glad I now use mainly the diary facility on this site by use of the smartphone app to keep it regularly updated on the go. I now no longer carry a paper diary as a result. |

Topic: General Discussion / new meter hiI have just started to use my icare machine, unfortunately i have to have my licence renewed every year and to comply with the DVLA regulations which says "Applicants with insulin treated diabetes will need to have used a blood glucose meter with a memory function to measure and record blood glucose levels for at least THREE MONTHS, prior to submitting their application. Unfortunately this machine only holds a maximum of 30 days 1 month average test results assuming you do not test yourself more than 3 times a day. This machine has not got the capability of downloading or bluetooth the results, a very outdated machine, compared with one i used 3 years ago. I have looked on the website and cannot see an alternative from iCare, but have emailed them. So guys be warned about the requirements from DVLA your machine does not comply with the legislation. regards |

Topic: General Discussion / new contour next usb blood glucose monitor I would never pay for a meter! All meter companies make their money on the test strips. If you contact your DAFNE educator or local diabetes team they may well have a meter they can give you. If not contact Bayer and say you are interested in their meter, they are likely to offer you one free. It's to their advantage since if you start using the meter you will be using a lot of strips and thus making them money. |

Topic: General Discussion / Centre Code Novarapidboi it's good but it's not right![]() You got the acronym correct but the description wrong , they (me and others) are patient reps that take part in DAFNE research programmes and meet twice a year with the DAFNE management team. Some of us have also attended the HCP group meetings as well. We also get to go to the DAFNE collaborative which is the annual meeting of everyone involved in DAFNE. For any one interested there is a forum on this site and most of the DUAG are registered users on the site. We are always interested in talking to anyone interested in becoming involved. |

Topic: General Discussion / new contour next usb blood glucose monitor I had a leaflet I received with my needles for the bayer contour usb meter (now the older meter) but it was a few months back and I'm sure at the time it was free not half price, I certainly don't remember having to pay.I think the bayer contour usb meter (older one) is fab. To look at it looks like an mp3 player is very discreet when you're out anywhere. You can download the software from the bayer website then plug your meter in and away you go with being able to see graphs etc. Re the bayer new contour next usb blood glucose meter I contacted bayer, explained I've got the older meter and they've upgraded me to the new meter foc. The added features on it are that as well as it storing your test results you now have the option to store insulin doses and carbs. I can't use mine just yet though because I've still got 150 test strips for the old meter to use up then when I've finished these I can then order on my repeat prescription the contour next strips. Hope some of this helps Gill ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / New food labelling I see that they are going to bring in uniform food labelling. However from what I've seen on the news, they only seem to mention calories, fat, sugar, salt. I assume carbohydrates are going to be mentioned. Apparently Diabetes UK has been liaised with so I would think so. What they really need to do for diabetics is to include the carb value for "per pack" and "per bar" , "per biscuit" etc etc. I know the maths may not be that hard but for example on some things it will give the carb value "per 100g", then you see that the total weight is 154g or 176g. I could understand that on something like a powder or liquied but why do that on something like a sandwich?! Let's hope this new labelling is clear. |

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin pump Hi all, well I finally get my insulin pump on the 9th november. I went just for a quick chat today before the big induction day, and I have to say I feel quite scared. Everything I know with injections is going to change..can't really explain it to be honest. |

Topic: General Discussion / bus driving/dvla guidelines
You can now get a PPL in the UK as a type 1 - some hoops to go through but not insurmountable, the only problem is, is that as a t1, you will always need to have a fully qualified non diabetic with you - just in case!, and that, for me, just takes away some of the fun. I don't think a t1 can fly commercial planes in the UK, but in the US you can - as long as they don't fly international. There have been some rule changes re bus - PSV and lorry - HGV licences, and, we can apply, but we will have to show at least 3 months worth of continuous testing to the GP that signs it off and the results show you are well controlled, you have had no episodes of a severe hypo - ie requiring anothers help and you have good warning signs. I was given a leaflet by my GP at my 6 monthly check up, and I researched getting a PPL about 4 years ago, but didn't go through with it as the lessons a still too expensive, even with a mate giving the lessons. |

Topic: General Discussion / Centre Code You can't get upgraded to DUAG that is something different. You can get upgraded to 'graduate' status with a centre code. To obtain a centre code you can either contact the DAFNE Centre toobtain the current code or email us via the 'Contact DAFNE Online' link at the bottom of the page. Just tell us which centre you attended and we can contact DAFNE Central to get you verified as a graduate and either upograde your account or give you a code to do it yourself. |

Topic: General Discussion / bus driving/dvla guidelines I think you'll find that that is no longer true novorapidboi. I'm sure they changed the rules, partly as a result of the BDA's representations. If you can fly a plane as a diabetic, as you can, then surely you can drive a bus.Ahmentep. |
