Topic: General Discussion / Hypos and testing

Can anyone explain again why we are not supposed to correct a high post hypo BG at the next mealtime? I had a hypo at 3am, at 8am I was 17 and it just doesn't feel right not to correct that. So I did, and at lunchtime I was 7.0.

I was one of the first to try the dafne system and it has been great for me and gives me a lot more freedom and choice but you do have to put a bit more effort into regular blood testing etc.I have been diabetic since i was 13 years old,and so far i havent had any of the bad things that i know can happen. They are high between meals as your food is digesting and releasing glucose into the blood stream, this will always happen, the trick is trying to keep the 'spike' as its called as low as you can.

This is done by trying to match up the theoretical digestion activity curve with the theoretical insulin activity curve. I don't know if theoretical is the right word but you know what I mean....

If you find your getting up to 13+ mmol/l 1.5-2 hours post meal then you should think about increasing the time between your injection and actually eating the meal. I use novo rapid as my QA and that takes 5-10 minutes to start working' however I need t least 15 minutes for it to be on par with my 'average' digestion date. Obviously everyone is different and every meal is different to, so its trail and error for each individual, as it is with all thing diabetes......;)

So to conclude its don to the timing of your per meal injection.........you should see the spikes drop

Topic: General Discussion / Cant get stable!!

Hi Sarah,
The blood infection aarrrggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I went overseas (Korea) to visit my daughter and her family and when In Korea i have to work really hard to keep the BGs down as they eat a lot of various rices and tend to put honey or palm sugar in their meat dishes. No one will hazard a guess as to exactly how I picked it up but it seems like I got it in Korea and actually had it for a couple of weeks.Drs say I could have caught it here and cooked it in Korea.

I felt tired and often went to bed very early and on one day when they had arranged a special outing I opted out as I was too tired (unlike me). I spent the day in bed but did not feel much better. So the only symptom I had was extreme tiredness. On the day I was to come home I had to change the infusion set at about 3:00am and when I got up to do that I passed out (I occasionally feel faint...low BP). Did not think much about it continued and went back to bed. The plane left at about 20:00 and when at the airport I felt unwell but not SICK. I ate an icecream and felt a little cold but as I was flying into Australia and dressed for that, I thought it was simply the outside temp. The plane trip back was unpleasant (very full) and cramped with several children who cried rather than slept! 10hour flight.

I arrived in Brisbane feeling OK but very tired. Through immigration, customs etc and into a cab to go home. I showered and went to bed. Woke up several hours later shivering. Into the shower to warm up and back to bed. This happened again later in the afternoon but when I woke at about 6:00pm I could not get off the bed. I rang the ambulance and again passed out when I went to open the door to make sure the ambos could get in! Short story: temperature 39.1, BP 110/40 and BG of 5.3. Diagnosis...very sick.
initially isolated but after tests moved to a ward and filled up with saline and antibiotics. Six days in hospital with BGs all over the place. I left hospital with TDD of close to 100 instead of my usual 65-75 and started working to get BGs and TDD down. TDD yesterday was 70.3 and all readings were between 3.8 and 10.1 (10 readings!). Heading in the right direction!

It has taken me some time but I now think that when Drs and nurses lay blame it is often because they do not have a good grasp of just how complex the whole thing is and how individual. It si not one size fits all!

I am on an Animas pump and what I have learnt is that it will take time and being impatient and reactive does you no good.

I seem to take a long time to bounce back and I just have to take my time and not expect instant results.

You sound like a younger version of me!

I usually target the midnight to dawn readings then the breakfast to lunch if you can get those right first it seems to make the afternoons more manageable. The last lot I work on are the 16:00-22:00. I do not eat after 18:00 so that makes it a bit easier.

I'd love to say be patient but I know what I think when I am told that, so ...tackle it bit by bit and good luck. Helen

Hi Helen,

Thans for your reply how did you get the blood infection and how did you know you had it?

Im very impatient because i feel ill when my sugars are not great and it gets me down just wanting to jack it in, yes i know not the attitude to have but when you end up in hospital and the doctors make out its my fault its rather annoying.

What pump are you on Helen?

i was and am of the impression that as long as your blood glucose readings are within target at meal times then thats what matters.when i was recently on my DAFNE course a couple of weeks ago when i asked about taking readings between meals the nurse said why would i want to under normal circumstances? i used to (prior to dafne) take a reading 2 hours after a meal but apparently, unless i was pregnant, then there was no need to do this.the only timew i take readings now is when i am going to have a meal/snack to see if i need to make some corrections to my intended insulin dose.please if this is wrong can someone advise me as well as i am only a newbee to all this
cheers

What should your BI be between meals?
I run high between meals but at some point before the next meal its within target but on the highside.
What is causing it to be so high?
How high would you expect it to be between meals and for how long?

I just worry that my average levels are high because they are always high between meals and on on target at meal times giving me a high Hb1c

Topic: General Discussion / Dafne Diary - looking for some comments / help (3)

As you can see my results are disastrous! My HB1AC was 9.6% in August 2011 then it went to 6.8% in December 2011. I've got an app on my smartphone called 'On Track' which is near enough with HB1AC results and it's currently showing my HB1AC as 8.2%!! Not as high as the 9.6% but still high enough. As you can see in my diary from my first topic I did 'looking for comments' I now enter CPs, ratios & I'm doing bedtime tests. I've upped my BI (lantus) twice each time by just 2u in the last couple of weeks. I'm not doing anything or eating anything different. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to try to put this right? I currently don't need jelly babies but my poor OH (who's not diabetic) does!

There have been two separate articles in Balance this year concerning the newly acquired right of diabetics to fly planes, including commercial flights. I know the thread is about driving busses but seeing the comments about my earlier assertion I thought I would add this information.

Hi Sarah.

I recently had an experience similar to yours (blood infection). It has taken over three weeks of going back to first principles with the pump to get my levels anywhere near decent! TDD is still about 25% higher than pre infection but generally the levels are dropping but not to the level of hypo. Sustained kidney and liver probs with the infection...kidneys now seem Ok but the liver haa a way to go!

MY GP states I am way too impatient and it will take weeks. While the red on your diary looks bad you are not totally out of control! Take your time and go back to what you were taught when you first went onto the pump. My endo's advice is also to target the lows and not the highs as I seem to over react to the highs...if you target the lows you will not get the reactive highs! I am also on a pump.

I wish you well and go slow. Helen

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin pump

i've had my pump a month now, was very scared before i got it and the first week found it such a major culture shock constantly feeling i had forgotten something !! my injection lol but 3 weeks later that feeling has gone its like i never injected. it has been quite frustrating getting my levels correct, lots of testing and carb free meals, but well worth it. my hcp has been amazing so supportive and helpful they are there for you so make sure you use them and their expert knowledge.
i know its early days but i feel like my life has totally changed, and am very happy with my pump.
good luck when you get it, hope all goes well.

I was given one of these meters on my Dafne course last week. so far I love it. I have only used it for a few days but have enjoyed playing with comunicating with my computer. It is small, discrete, and you can add stuff onto it. Unfortunately, you cannot add BGs that have not been recorded on this monitor but you can add carbs and insulin data. I like it because it is small and doesn't take up all the room in your handbag - or whatever - and looks like a memory stick. I like the finger pricker in that you don't have to touch the lance to eject it. Get in touch with your local dafne rep. Why pay for it if I didn't have to. Hope this is helpful. Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Flu Jabs

Had mine Fri 26th at midday, within half an hour I was wobbly, as I was out, it was an hour after before I could test. BG was fine and all have been since. So some sort of reaction. 3 hours after jab, felt terribly sleepy. Had tender top of arm ever since, this Sunday morning the top of my arm was itching and tingling, as if it was healing. Oh well as long as I don't get flu!

A lady diabetic called Rose
Once gave herself the wrong QA dose
From the hypo - she recovered
But in sweat she was smothered
And had a feeling that was very morose.

It applies to my 7.5 ton entitlement that requires a yearly medical. I thought it was no longer permitted to discriminate against a disability ???? Under the DDA. Disability Discrimination Act.

Not strictly true. The DVLA are apparently saying that all Diabetics 'may' have their meter checked for all licenses. I would not be too worried though since this is apparently only in rare circumstances. Personally I think it is an intrusion into private information and none of their business. It would be interesting to see if any one challenges this if they try to withdraw anyones license based on this information. Firstly I don't see how they can demand access to it and secondly a meters readings could easily be fabricated and don't show severe hypo's. I don't know about you but if I was to need assistance for a hypo I'm not going to be using my blood meter am I ? I'm not going to know what the hell is going on.
The whole idea is just bizzare and sums up the DVLA who are happy to sell your personal data to anyone who will pay but then think they can invade your privacy. Just say no Wink
