Topic: Site Development / Different "Snacks" for different times of day I wonder if anyone else is interested in thisIs it possible to have different "Snacks" such as:- 1000hrs, 1500hrs, 1800hrs and 2200hrs as my ratio varies throughout the day. A 1000hr snack is 1.5:1 but 1800hr is 3:1 At the moment I just manually enter the value of the units Lovely App and very very useful, impresses my GP !! |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / pasta counting Did you get the weight before it was cooked or after?Pasta is one of the foods where the CP amount changes due to water being absorbed... The best thing to do is get the pre-cooked/raw weight and then you know for sure what you're working with before the weight shift. Other foods like this to watch out for are jacket potatoes (tend to lose water) and rice (tends to gain water). I'm sure others can think of more to be wary of. Best wishes! |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / pasta counting i had 220 grams of pasta last night with my spaghetti bolognaise and with being on a one to one ratio for my CP S injected 22 units of quick acting insulin for the totral meal consumed (including pudding) the pack of pasta said it was 78carbs per 100 grams consumed. one and a half hours later my blood level was 3.4 and i had a hypo. anyone got any thoughts on the above?i have just finished a DAFNE course last week and look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested in the future cheers paul |

Topic: General Discussion / new meter My own conclusions were reached finaly on a side by side comparison with the another meter (Optium Exceed- now called freestyle exceed), as it became more apparent it was prone to spurious reading I found myself more & more, testing with the 2 meters for safety. From the same sample area the exceed would read the same result consistantly, the Mobile would vary and hardly ever agree with the exceed (especially outside of normal target range). I may be wrong but the testing solutions for meters give test results in the target range which is indeed where I found the mobile to be the most accurate. It remminded me very much of the the very first meter I had (early 90s) in terms of varing results. I believe it's because it uses the older type light technology to analyse the sample rather than the newer method which looks at electron flow (non technical description). When I compare my Exceed to my Hospital's, calibrated daily, meter it is always within 0.1 mmol/L. It's entirely posible I had a faulty one, but the meer fact that it came with a warning to be cautious with it's results from my HCPs, does not help it's cause. |

Yeah well the bed time testing I'm trying to get back into the habit of doing this but mainly it's because I go to bed about 2300pm ish or there abouts and am too tired at that time to do testing so just do my injection of BI |

Why do you only test three times per day? --- no bedtime test! I test six to eight times per day (and always before driving. Am I alone in this?? I used to experience a lot of hypos during the night resulting in medical attention being required, |

Topic: General Discussion / Flu Jabs Like LadyNovo777 I'm sure I was told the pneumococcal was "once a lifetime" vaccine. Had mine several years ago, and has never been discussed with the Dr. again since. |

Topic: General Discussion / new meter I was on my DAFNE course last week and had for a few months before that moved over to the mobile, a nurse raised a question about reliability and got me some .. testers for the tester (i forget the proper name), and so I then tested the meter myself and it was fine and I'd like to think a machine not fit for purpose wouldn't be released.I think the key to remember (and something I saw for myself when testing my sugars after spreading some jam), is ALWAYS wash your hands with just water before doing a test. Mine is the MK 1 and the MK 2 looks a little nicer but while this works I'll stick with it. All that said if you don't trust a meter it's time to find a different one, we all need to be able to trust the results the machines give us |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / DAFNE Carb Portion list Thanks for the replies, I had looked at the book and assumed it was density as boiled weighs more than a roast, I guess I was just expecting boiled to weigh more than raw, but raw and boiled, 100g are both down as 1.5The important thing is I'll have to have another roast dinner this Sunday purely to ensure I get the principles right |

Topic: General Discussion / new meter I have been using the MK 2 version of the Mobile and it is much better than the original, more Compact Plus with the 50 test cartridge. The MK 2 is roughly the same dimension but slimmer, it now has a micro USB connector with a version of Smart-Pix built in. Just plug in to pc and double click on start.html, no more infra-red link required, and can be used at home or work as all data stays on meter. A plus is that the info is also available as Excel format. Iave run the mobile and plus side by side for a week and am a convert to the MK 2 mobile. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / DAFNE Carb Portion list Garry nailed it.You'll find the same problem when it comes to jacket potatoes. The opposite happens for rice and pasta - they take on more water. Best to weigh stuff raw/before cooking in most cases so you know what you're dealing with before the density change. Enjoy your roast when you have it! Yum! |

Topic: General Discussion / What are you reading? Oh my fellow book worms! There's an E-book Humble Bundle if you're interested in grabbing a good deal and donating to charity!http://www.humblebundle.com/ This is unusual because the humble bundles are usually PC games. I was so surprised! I'm going to snap them all up! Info at a glance:
Enjoy if you do take advantage! |

Topic: General Discussion / Changing the QA insulin you use. My numbers are showing up green today so I don't think I'll make the change just yet if I do at all.. still going to test while the goings good. The reason this came up is because my BGs really throw me sometimes when the correctional units take me down by 5-6BG per 1QA... that's such a drastic drop so I wondered if changing it would make it less - or would it make my ratios less difficult to work out. With the better numbers I've been getting the past few days though, hopefully things will start working out better and I can get some freedom back for all my hard work. Still would be interesting to find out if any one has made the QA change though. The BI change I did years ago made a noticeable difference and it would quite interesting if there are any differences in the two commonly used QA insulins. I've been on Humalog for as long as I can remember but I might ask my parents if I was on anything else before that. It wouldn't surprise me if I wasn't. I wonder if it's worth comparing how people respond to their QA (like me with 5-6BG) but considering finding the balance can prove quite difficult, what someone might be saying may not be the case really for them because they're still working out their needs... If or when I do make the change, I will definitely say. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / DAFNE Carb Portion list The numbers are right.Just down to carbohydrate 'density' Dave. Boiled potato has significant water content retained. Roast potato has much lower water content. Regards Garry |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / DAFNE Carb Portion list I went on a DAFNE course last week and just typing up notes and a kind of cheat sheet into Excel for easy carrying around and I just have a question regarding potato differences. One bit I took away was that an egg sized boiled potato is 1 CP (it puts weight as 60g), and yet a roast potato at 50g is shown as 1.5. Which seems much higher for a roast potato than a boiled potato, do others find this ratio works ? I'm a little cautious as eating out this coming weekend and planning on a Sunday Roast, but 1.5 CP per small roast potato seems a little high.Anyone with thoughts/experience on counting there Sunday roasts ? Thanks in advance |
