Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / extremely high blood first thing in the morning Something worth considering for those with dawn phenomenon is the possibility of supplementing your basal insulin with NPH insulin. NPH has a peak between 6-8 hours after injecting, so injecting it between dinner and bedtime can lead to the peak action coinciding with the DP rise around 3-5 am, and help lower that. I'm not suggesting replacing basal insulin with NPH, but adding it to the insulins being used. I have found that it works quite well for me. |

Topic: DAFNE Graduate Group (DGG) / Apps, Apps, Apps Hello all,I’d just like to ask everyone's advice for the best one-stop App for your DM management? I use Tomato to collect my Libre data every 5 minutes and send it to my watch (so want to continue using that or an alternative if possible) using a MiaoMiao (I highly recommend buying one for those using Libres as your phone/watch will automatically alarm when you go out of range e.g. at night and if you have kids With DM you can also have it alarm on other phones to alert carers). I also log my insulin in this as I can export data to check my total insulin use trends and u/kg/day etc). I also scan using the Libre app every 6 hours as that is shared with my HCPs. I’m vegan and the DAFNE App doesn’t appear to contain any items using search-words like ‘Vegan’, ‘McCartney’ (Linda) etc so I’m also having to use Nutra Check Calorie Counter when making meals in order to determine the CPs. While all these Apps purport to feed data both to and from the IOS Health app the glucose and Carb data doesn’t go to the DAFNE app so I have to then manually enter it all (obviously I’d expect to have to enter the insulin but the glucose from Tomato would be handy as maybe then I could stop also having to scan the Libre with the Abbott app so often (I do appreciate that Abbott don’t stand by data collected by the MiaoMiao but I find it to have pretty good correlation and if anything the MM data more closely matches finger pricks). I know that’a a lot of information to unpack but basically I’m just looking to reduce how many apps I need to use at each mealtime (Currently 4). |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / extremely high blood first thing in the morning Hello,Like you I used to have severe dawn phenomenon since I was a teenager (now 40), so I haven’t been able to eat breakfast in all that time as I’ve spent most mornings wrestling my glucose down. Your HCP may have not been convinced about splitting the dose as you’re on a relatively low dose but my DAFNE team recently suggested splitting mine (which I’ve never previously had suggested since starting a basal and bolus regime about 25 years ago) and it’s done wonders. I was previously on 46u Lantus at night but have now been able to decrease it down due to the splitting and am on 20u PM and 15u AM and am waking up with it fine for the first time in more than half my life. As it’s been a few months I hope you’re still doing well. I thought I’d share my experience as I wonder how many others are having similar issues and thought us sharing these experiences is exactly what this forum is for, so if anyone is having similar issues discuss this with your HCP. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / slow acting insulin I'm 78 and also sometimes have problems with insulin absorption especially in the tummy area. Unfortunately as we get older we tend to build a layer of fat around our middle and this interferes with insulin absorption. If you are injecting in the tummy area that could explain why you are having a struggle. You may have to use the thighs or the buttocks which is what I do. Not so hard as it sounds. I'm lucky as my missus is also happy to stick the needle in to my upper arms. Best of luck. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / slow acting insulin I have had type 1 diabetes for 6 1/2 years; I am 75 years of age.My big problem is the fast acting insulin acts slowly; I started on Apidra & it was taking 3 hours to have an effect; I moved on to FIASP & on the instructions it said it had to be taken 0 - 1 minute before eating; it still took 3 hours; I am now back on Apidra. What am I doing wrong because my because my blood sugar levels are higher than they should be. Thanks |
