Topic: General Discussion / Pump Accessories Questionaire

Hi guys,

I'm doing a college project on Type 1 Diabetes regarding the Insulin pumps. I was just wondering if anyone would answer some questions? It would be a great help.

1. Do you use any pump accessories to wear your pump?
2. If yes, which accessories do you use?
3. Where did you buy the accessory from?
4. Would you use a phone sock to cover your pump?
5. Do you think there is a good range of accessories to choose from?
6. Are the accessories easily sourced/found?
7. What type of patterns would appeal to you? Plain/Stand out?
8. Any recommendations on what you find comfortable to wear?

If you could answer any of these questions I would really appreciate it. Very Happy

I hope you're going to be okay mags2101. Sad It sounds like illness to me too; what are your ketone levels? Also, were they tested for by urine test or blood test?

Best wishes.

Topic: General Discussion / Improving DAFNE online manual

I was going through DAFNE course handbook. It's a very useful book for me and I use this as a reference document. I would like to suggest few changes in the handbook, if it's possible to make the changes.

1) Please add a note on where should we inject insulin. It may be somewhere in the document, but it's not easy to find it out from the main
menu.
2) Add *JEPG image or pictures, whenever it's required.
3) I dont know if it's possible to have this manual in *.pdf format? It'll be useful to have this as a standard pdf document.

With Regards,

Vinod Kavle

Topic: General Discussion / Apps

Would anyone like to share info about iPhone/ Android apps that are useful? I'm thinking particularly about commercial apps that give nutrition information about the company's products. For example, my old favourite McDonalds have an iPhone app that includes nutrition inf. about all their products - including up to date information about their one-off specials. Given the free wi-fi available in most McDs I find I use the app a lot.

KFC have an app which links you to the nutritional info section of their website - useful but a bit clumsy. I see that BK also have an app that provides nutrition info on their menu, and there must be loads more.

Topic: General Discussion / Advise on pump please

At the end of the day, assuming that you are given the opportunity to use a pump, whether it's succesful for you will depend on whether in practice the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. As a DAFNE graduate I have pretty good control, but last Summer I was given the opportunity to go on to a pump to help deal with a larger than desired number of hypos and some difficulties with exercise. For me, I found that the pump was a real intrusion into my daily life, a constant reminder that I have diabetes. When I did my DAFNE course in 2007 it was a life-changer, allowing me to be normal(ish) again. I stuck with the pump for five months, but in the end my HCPs and I decided that it wasn't for me. In fact, my HbA1c went up with the pump (it was pretty good with DAFNE) and didn't seem to want to come down, although my hypos did reduce.

I'm now back on DAFNE and my HbA1c has come down significantly. My HCPs were brilliant, I wasn't made to feel a "failure", and they were always there for both technical advice and discussion. My advice would be to give it a go if you get the chance - the worst that can happen is that it doesn't work for you, and DAFNE is always there to return to. At least you'll know!

Good luck!

Sheila

Good luck with your application to get on the pump therapy list - I suspect that if the team have already discussed the possibility and said there is funding available you stand a good chance - else why mention it. Whilst they do cost a lot of money, the NHS does recognise that in the long run they save money - as the control that can be achieved can be significantly better than the multi dose way.

That said, they are not for everyone, and they do require a lot of work - esp at the beginning, so I hope it does work for you,, and it helps deal with your particular problem.

Let us know how it goes.

Even with all this information the best thing to do is eat these foods and make a record, whether it be physical or mental record.........

you may find it will be only some high fat/high GI foods that justify a split.......

happy testing......... Very Happy

My understanding of insulin sensitivity is the same, although it doesn't always work out like that.....

When you wake up your body has been inactive for many hours, and that's really inactive, not just watching the TV, so this would explain the higher amounts needed in the morning for most people.......

your pattern seems to be a good example of what happens to insulin sensitivity in general, basically you get more sensitive as the day goes on, regardless of increased activity at certain points during the day.........

Many thanks for the replies they have been a good help.

Thank you NuMo I will have a look out for the book, it is always good to hear what other people have found helpful.

Simon I think it is wrong that you could not be considered for pump therapy due to good control, it is very frustrating. I am fortunate that my healthcare team have got funding at the moment, but that doesn't guarantee that I will be accepted for the treatment. Hopefully through time things will change for the better. I found the website you recommended very helpful. Thank you.

Thank you novorapidboi26, your information answered a lot of my questions. If I decide to go ahead I know it won't be until end of year beginning of next, I know the pct has funding at the moment but as I said to Simon there is no guarantee that I would meet all the criteria needed to go onto pump therapy, only time will tell. It is good to hear that you are doing well with the pump.

Thank you all again for taking the time to respond it has been a great help and is very much appreciated. Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Mealtime Ratios

Should these be less at the most active time of the day then more at the least active part of the day?

My most active time of the day (if you can call that being housework lol) is during the day then evening is usually spent sitting down in front of the tv.

my current ratios are:
- 2:10 - breakfast (2u for every 10g carbs)
- 1.5:10 - lunchtime (1.5u for every 10g cho)
- 1:10 - teatime (1u for every 10g cho)

Topic: General Discussion / SPLITTING Q/A INSULIN DOSES

You can use either of these web sites:

http://www.glycemicindex.com/

http://nutritiondata.self.com/ - Enter the food name and it will tell you the estimated glycemic load.

The GI is simply a dietary tool that helps us differentiate between the various carbohydrate foods we eat and how our bodies use them.

Carbohydrates with a low GI (55 or less) don't make our blood glucose levels rise very high for very long. They provide sustained energy.
Carbohydrates with a high GI (70 or more) are the ones that cause our blood glucose levels to go higher for longer. High blood glucose may cause damage to vital organs.

Hope that this helps.

Mark, I can't access the link to the Glycaemic index you've included above. I get "You are not authorized to visit that area on the site" displayed on the home page.
