Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Hi Steven,I've added the Snack option to the drop down for you. I'll take a look at sorting your other requests over the weekend. How do you currently record alcohol? Units? Thanks, Simon |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios tryed them all Hi paul. I have just completed Dafne and we were told we should not be needing more than 3 units per CP as a ratio i.e. 3:1. They told us that if this was the case then it was the Background Insulin that was not right. However, you seem to be needing massive amounts of insulin for someone with Type 1 and it looks to me like you have insulin resistance. How old were you when you were diagnosed?? Are you a classic Type 1 i.e dramatic onset of symptoms or do you think you are really Type 2 perhaps? Just a thought. take care. |

Topic: General Discussion / level of bi to echo Karl's comment, Dawn Phenomenon is where your body releases hormones to prepare your body for waking up in the morning. This causes a rise in BG that is more pronounced in some people and can often be mistaken for the 'rebound' effect from a hypo. With regard to the amount of Levimir required, I would not worry about 'recommended amounts'. Every person is different and can even vary their requirements over a period of time, any kind of 'recommended amount' is based on generalised statistics NOT individual requirements. The best option is to keep following DAFNE rules and find the correct level for you, if you are worried about this talk to your DAFNE educator. I'm sure they will be more than happy to advise you. I'm struggling with a similiar problem at the moment and I'm not sure if its BI or Dawn Phenomenon, the only sure way to find out is adjustment and testing. |

Topic: General Discussion / level of bi Thanks for your reply. I've been doing some research and it looks like when I changed to levemir other people have suggested you need more levemir than lantus. |

Topic: General Discussion / level of bi Thats not my understanding of it and I guess this has been ruled out by the 3am checks! The dawn phenomenon is due to , as I understand it, hormones released during the night. |

Topic: General Discussion / level of bi If you are having dawn phenomenon the last thing you want to do is increase your BI. Dawn phenomenon is where you blood sugar goes so low so your liver releases all the sugar it has stored up in it to stop a very bad hypo. I’m no pro so check it with a DSN or doctor.Marc |

Topic: General Discussion / level of bi helloI am relatively new to DAFNE and whilst I am quite small I feel like I am having to keep increasing my bi. I changed from lantus to levemir and have already put this up to 13 in morning and 14 at night and it looks like I need to increase this again. On doing some 3am checks it appears I may have a bit of the 'dawn phenomonon'. Does anyone else feel like they are taking quite a lot of BI in relation to the recommended amounts for height and weight. |

Topic: General Discussion / "Balance" letter about injecting in public Hi all It seems that all posters would happily inject in public. Me too but we may be missing one important point. Perhaps the person in question was injecting in her rear end as i do with my BI. Now even i draw the line at doing that in public. Joking aside i heard recently about a chap who was asked to leave a pub before he got his meal because the landlord thought he was a junkie as he was found in the toilet with a syringe. PS i'm a nurse as well. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Pizza Personaly I find the values spot on. For a 9 inch thin crust it says 9 and on 2:1 i give 18 and it works fine. Must say though I am scared to death of the prospect of eating a 12" deep pan as i would need 49 units. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Mini Cheddars Steve,Hopefully, the user entries will be validated in the not too distant future and any discrepencies ironed out. I know there is to be a new revision of the Carb Counting Book ( I'm really looking forward to the manual process of updating the entries on the site :-( ) and as part of this process they are supposed to be verifying the user submitted entries on the site. I'm waiting for news of this process and the entries that have been verified. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Mini Cheddars Sorry but I don't agree with the user-submitted CP entry for Mini Cheddars. One of the bags from a multipack has around 13g carbs so that's 1.5 CPs, not 2.5 CPs as submitted. Unless we're talking about the larger size bags you can buy on their own but surely they weigh more than 25g?!!? |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries A couple more suggestions please if you don't mind!1. I use an Excel spreadsheet at the moment and have added a row for alcohol consumed - can this possibly be added? 2. Could you add 'Snack' to the drop-down list to avoid having to use 'Other' all the time? Thanks again! Steven |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE and Employers Hi there,Having just completed the DAFNE course this is my first post on the site!!! I had to take 4 days holiday and a flexi leave day which basically is a day I have earned in time put in, as the company I work for works on flexi time, as they would not grant me the time off as I was told by my employer the course was on a voluntary basis. In response to DAFNE producing a letter... There is one that does just that.. It explains everything from what DAFNE is and the benefits to an employer.. I was sent this from the DAFNE co-ordinator... for my employer which i presented to them... unfortunatley made no difference. Hope this helps Cheers Lee |

Topic: Questions ? / Cold Medicines Hi Lizzie, hope your cold is better now. Mostly cold meds do contain eg glucose/sucrose etc. so warning! The warning with some decongestants that contain pseudo ephidrine ( ? spelling!) SINUTAB etc, is I think ,because the side effect of this MAY mimic or mask hypo symptoms ( restlessness, anxiety, shaking, increased heart rate/palpitations) and it can reduce the effectiveness of medicines for high blood pressure. don't know if this helps.... |

Topic: Questions ? / Alternative injection sites Hi, don't know if shorter needles would help. May be worth a try. BD microfine needles come in a 5mm length and they are due to launch a 4mm needle soon.(your local diabetes specialist nurse may have some samples of 5mm needles to try with) If you have no sub cutaneous fat to speak of you could possibly be hitting muscle when you inject?? Good luck |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE and Employers Hi, i work 4 days a week. My employers gave me 2 days paid leave and i had to use 2 days from my annual leave allowance. I thought this was generous. I will also be given paid leave to attend the DAFNE follow up session. |

Topic: General Discussion / Weighing scales Hi Netz, Just to say i brought some scales from Lloyds pharmacy last week. They were originally £20 but i got them for £9.99. They are called Nutriscales. They show up calories, carbs, sodium etc. I was alittle confused in using them at first but really once i read the instructions, they did the job! Have a look around some branches of Lloyds pharmacies and see if you could find any! Good Luck! |
