Topic: General Discussion / "Balance" letter about injecting in public I work in healthcare and I am a type 1 diabetic. Not that long ago I accidentially did my injection in our staff room and later recived a email from my manager who is not medically trained telling me to basically hide away to do my injection! It made me feel like a total leppar like I got some catching horrid disease. Like someone else said in a previous post we did all not ask to get diabetes When I am eating out like we did on the dafne course or yesterday when I had lunch out I did my injection under the table and no one batted an eyelid! I hope that the people who make such a fuss over it get diabetes themselves and see how they like it. You would think being in the medical profession they would be more understanding but obviously I am very much mistaken! We often toilet or clean people up at lunchtime and then go and eat ourselves! Its second nature to us. I would hate that nurse looking after me! Melissa Dafne graduate 28th may 2010 |

Topic: General Discussion / Bayer Contour USB Hello,Annette - Which meter are you using just now? The Contour USB is a good meter. The display screen is probably one of the best on any BG meter (and it's nice to have some colour on it instead of monochrome). It also needs a tiny amount of blood and gives the result in 3-5 seconds. You can tag readings with before/after meal. The claim about the software running directly from the USB part is a little misleading - the computer needs to have JAVA Runtime installed for the software to work. I feel they should maybe have made that a bit clearer. Overall a very good meter, but the lack of medication (insulin/pills) and food (carbs) input may make a lot of DAFNE users stay with the OneTouch Ultra. Just my thoughts, NiVZ |

Topic: General Discussion / Bayer Contour USB Thanks - that was helpful - I don't think I'll bother with one - it would be too complicated getting my strips prescription changed knowing my GP surgery. I'll stick with writing my results in my diary. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Help with doses and ratios Hi,Can anyone offer any advice on my sugar levels at the moment? My levels seem to be rising BG Averages Last 7 days: 8.4 (38 entries) Last 14 days: 8.0 (52 entries) Last 30 days: 7.0 (131 entries) even though i eat similar meals at similar times and have now moved my injection sites my sugar levels seem to have a mind of their own. What works as a ratio one day doesnt the next. I was going high during the night so i increased my background by a unit but last night it sent me low. I seem to be constantly chasing my tail even though a few months ago everything was perfectly fine, i even managed to get my hba1c down to 6.5. I use novorapid and lantus, which i inject at 1pm every day I read a post where people said that their lantus wasn't working for 24 hours so they split the dose, do you think i should try this? The problem i have is that my problems are over night when the lantus is theoretically at its strongest so i'm not sure this would help. I have an appointment with consultant bit earliest I could get is 5 weeks time, i dont want to spend every night in the next 5 weeks correcting my doses. Any advice anyone can offer would be appreciated. Thanks, Lee |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Please implement both Simon as I'm not sure the auto calc method would work for all of my injections, for reasons I won't bother to try and explain! :-)Thanks Steven |

Topic: General Discussion / Lantus Lasting 24 hours? I take 1 shot of Lantus 32 units every 24 hours, and i take this around 22.00 everyday. Ive never had problems with it running out during the 24 hours, but saying that iam probably taking alot more than some of you guys are, or maybe not? this seems to work fine for me.paul |

Topic: General Discussion / "Balance" letter about injecting in public This is completely disgusting the 1st post that is. it rely makes me cross when people say to me, can you please not do that infront of me because i dont like injections/needles. now im not a rude person, but for me, i didnt choose to be diabetic or ask to have to take injections 2-6 times a day, but i dont let that ruin my day to day life. the nurse mentioned should be ashamed of themself.but if i were someone who needed to take a tablet form of medication in a restaurant of take an inhaler for something thats fine not a single person would say a thing. i think its absolutley shameful for anyone to say something like that. when i need to take a shot out i try and do it in my stomach or arm, and do it so people cant see what iam doing, to avoid this kinda of scene. frankley it sickens me to hear and read about these kind of things. |

Topic: Site Development / Online BG Diaries Ok I'll look at how I might implement an auto calc option, would anyone rather have the current method than an auto calc one? (If so I'll implement both).Simon |

Topic: Site Development / Entry type Hi Lee,I've added the correctional dose type for you. Your other request will take a bit of time, I'll put it in my to-do list, however I'm splitting my time between my day job, creating DAFNE Online for the iPhone and and maintaining the site. I will work on this for you too and let you know when it's done! Cheers, Simon |

Hi Kvirdi, The key things our antenatal diabetes team stress to women planning pregnancy is to: continue using reliable contraception until your Hba1c is as good as possible (6-7 %). A higher dose of folic acid than normal is recommended of 5 mg/day. We ask mums to test their blood glucose more frequently aiming for blood glucose to be less than 6 mmols/l before meals and no more than 7.8 mmols/l 1 hour after meals and before bed. It is best to discuss with your diabetes specialist in Hong Kong what targets they aim for in pregnancy there as it may differ from what we do in the UK |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Pre-pregnancy preparations Following my recent marriage my husband and I are starting to think about having a family. I have spoken to my GP about this (in Hong Kong where I am currently living) but would value tips on readiness preparations e.g. advised HbA1c levels (my latest test result is 7.1), folic acid intake (do diabetic women need to take more) etcI have booked a full assessment with a diabetic specialist here in HK but would value thoughts from a DAFNE perspective. Many thanks |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios tryed them all If you are insulin resistant, you might want to talk to your diabeties educator to see if your ratio for adjustment is enough. Normally one unit should drop your blood glucose 2-3 mmols, however it may be that one unit of insulin only lowers your blood glucose by 1.5 or even one mmol. Also give it a few days for your body to adjust berfore you increase your carb ratio. It is hard to find a pattern in one day. Remember ratios may differ during the day you may have a higher ratio in the morining, a different one at lunch and different again at dinner. The stress of feeling you are unable to get this right may also be affecting your BGL. |

Topic: Site Development / Entry type Hi Steven,Sorry if I didn't make it clear but i was hoping for an option in the entry type drop down box which says correction. I think it will help if i can figure out when i am making correctional injections and as there is an option for hypo it is a similar idea. Cheers, Lee |

Topic: Site Development / Entry type Hi Lee,I'm sure Simon will reply at some point but it says underneath the input boxes: You may enter corrective adjustments to CPs, QA and BI in the format '8+1' Also there is an entry type of 'Snack' (I asked for it) and there's a box for background insulin too!
