I don't think you can get one free as the injection routine is adequate. You occasionally see appeals for funds to enable children to go on pumps. The individual pays for the "accessories" but they are subsidised by the govt. Goodnight..test and off to bed. Helen

So it is the same as here pretty much....

The NHS provides free healthcare for all (Medicare), and if you want it faster or something more specialised you go private (health fund- some kind of insurance or money up front).........

Theres not many people that I am aware of that have paid for their own pump or went through privately, that I know of in the UK, no doubt there has been.......

It seems really pricey for you, could you get it free, but have to wait, and who pays for all the things that come with the pump, canullas, tubing etc..........

Where do I start with the health system?

This has not been a good year for me. The diabetes, cancer diagnosis followed by fairly serious surgery, non healing incision and now the pump issue. All up I am out of pocket about $1100 for Dr visits and I spend about $150-$160 a month on medication, strips, needles etc. The actual hospital stay (1 week) was completely covered by my health fund. I have been a member since my early 30s and currently pay just less than $2500 a year. I am hoping they pay for the pump in its entirety. First visit to the Diabetes Educator (necessary to get the pump) will cost $200 and I am not sure how much I will be able to claim. Conservative estimate for the whole year will put me out of pocket between $5-6000.

As I am a retiree (but not a pensioner) once I reach $1126 out of pocket expenses for Dr visits I will get 80% of what the Dr charges back. I have a visit scheduled for 11/11/2010 to get a certificate entitling me to drive. It will (hopefully) be endorsed with "recognises hypoglycaemia...fit to drive". The Dr will charge $66 and I will be out of pocket about half of that. if I reach the threshold before then I will get $52.90 back. Roll on 2011 and the cure by whatever avenue!

So basically we have two platforms...universal health care (Medicare) for all Australian citizens ( and extras! I am assuming you Brits come under the Medicare umbrella but I could be wrong). Then if you want to be able to choose your own Dr, go to the dentist, optometrist etc you join a health fund. There is a tax deduction if you have private health insurance. If you are really sick you get into the public system very quickly but if you require non urgent treatment (eg hip replacement) you are put on a waiting list that can mean a very long wait. Get your pump before you come!

I will hopefully know more on 18/11/2010 but I am being fairly aggressively pursued by a pump manufacturer who is offering to walk me through the process and iron out potential glitches. heaven protect me from sales persons!

I think the only way forward is ginetics to be honest............stem cell research, as I understand is the utilizing of cells that can essentially turn into any cell and perform any function.........

Then what?

Our own antibodies will still be instructed to attack the newly formed cells...........short term yes, cure no........:-(

So how long till you find out about the pump...

Also what is the healthcare system like in australia, I though similar to the UK......(maybe hoping to immagrate one day...lol)

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Pumps

I am constantly surprised when talking to other diabetics the number of them who have not heard about Dafne. I did my course in july 2008 (a work colleague had been referred by her Endo and spoke very highly of the protocols). I understood that there was funding available to run a trial and I was part of that trial. The hospital where I did the course (Mater) no longer offers the course but the Royal Brisbane is currently funded to run Dafne courses. Judging from this forum it seems Dafne is more pervasive in Britain...or at least that is how it seems to me.

I have been a diabetic for more than half my life and am amazed at how far we have come. I had an aunt (diabetic) who "lived" on boiled cabbage in the 50's and look where we are now. Roll on stem cell research! I want nothing less than a CURE!

Prett much yes, or something similar, DAFNE is one of many educational schemes that basically teaches you about counting carbs, ratios etc with extras like sick day rules, driving, etc......

DAFNE does work, its just that some, like me suffer from dawn phenomonon or increased sensitivity, and thats where the pump would come in handy as it programmabe while you sleep and delivers very small doses.....

I wont be alive the day all diabetics go on a pump, I dont think..........

Pumps dont suit everyone, I mean if everyone was on one then no doubt control would be perfect, but it would probabaly be better than that of a non diabetic, and that for me is not the way I want to look upon my condition...

I assume in australia pump therapy is totally seperate of dafne or any other training.....

Hi Novorapidboi!
I am actually having more than seven injections most days and doing at least 7-8 tests most days with the odd extra 2:00am. I thought that all this Dafne stuff was being "studied" certainly in Australia it is nearly always in the form of trials to check efficacy etc. If we all eventually go on to pumps what does that say about Dafne? Are we "failures" or "super successes" as far as the efficacy of Dafne is concerned?? Or is Dafne the transition phase. I understand you guys in Britain have to have done Dafne before you get your pump. Is this true?

Having been diabetic for 30 years , my hba1c results have always been roughly between 10 and 12 (not good) always been put down to having brittle diabetes . Went on dafne in June and put on pump in september and just look at the difference im totally amazed as my diabetic nurse said it looks like the pumps what i needed all along

In terms od pumping and the dafne data, I believe you will actually be recording much more than the standard dafne records, this is because you are able to adjust basal doses by the hour as well as give 'dual wave' bolus doses...........so to establish what these doses are, by the hour, you will need to test much more and therefore record much more......the rules are exactly the same with dose adjustment, just more refined..

Hi the link points to the correct place, the same place as you originally posted. I just didn't put the full text on the link in the bit that shows on screen.
I'm sure you 'can' send SMS for medical info but I presume it has to be opt in and I would not but that's just a personal opinion.

Thanks for the comments and feedback. Thank you marke for making the web link live. It doesn't point to quite the correct place within the site, but at least it gets you close! Please click on the 2nd 'button' at the the top of the page, 'Delivering Results 2 U' to see what this is all about Smile

We are so lucky in Sandwell- an excellent relationship exists between 1e and 2e care teams, Sandwell PCT places diabetes as one of its top priorities and funds our DAFNE programme, and the acute Trust is right behind this project too. If Carlsberg did diabetes, it would probably be in Sandwell- LOL

Incidentally, on our patch texts are already used to send out Chlamydia results and appointment reminders, so we have not had difficulty getting governance approval to send A1c in this way, but only to those that ask for it. A DAFNE graduate helped developed the designs Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Pumps

Hi guys, I have been reading these posts with interest as I have been thinking about going on a pump for a while. If you read most of the posts I am the one with the non healing surgical incision! (Yep, still not healed but I think it is on its way!) Since the surgery I have been doing many more tests and more QA injections and have now settled into a pattern of covering even my commercially bought cappuccinos so it is 7 injections most days.

I went to a pumping information session at the hospital on the weekend and the theme of "it is a process not an event" really hit home when I realized that the first step is a consultation with a CDE (Credentialled Diabetes Educator) scheduled 18 Nov (earliest available). A night in hospital in Jan/Feb and I am presuming we are "pumping" from there on. Basically three months from deciding to pursue pumping.

The system here (Australia) is different we buy the pump ($(AUD)5-8000) and then if you have private health insurance you get some, or, all of it back from the insurer. I rang mine and they were very noncommittal discussing whether or not the degree of cover would impact on my decision to go on a pump. It seems that the degree of cover given is dependent on what the endocrinologist and GP say regarding the benefit to me personally. You get more points if you are a child; committed to managing the diabetes; have "dawn phenomenon" or unrecognized hypos; high HbA1cs. Simply wanting to do it better (lower the HbA1cs) is not enough! I could be wrong but that was my take on the conversation. I am not sure whether the amount of cover would cause me to cancel or at least delay my "process".

I am hoping that as a Dafne Grad and someone who is used to carb. counting and dose adjustments the education phase will be truncated.

Davejg I am a bit like you nervous but I'm wondering if it is a bit like a committed relationship. Requires total commitment and a lot of communication. I am in the three month "engagement" phase!
I am however not known for my patience and tend to want things done yesterday! 3 months...good grief!

Thanks for the range of opinions. Any data on Dafne Grads that move onto pumps? Does this impact on the Dafne data?

Its nice to see a Diabetes Team doing something so proactive and different, I wish my local PCT was prepared to do something like this. I personally prefer the one on the right. It ties in with all these food labelling initiatives and so hopefully would be more identifiable for most people. At my PCT I still have to ask for all my results including my HBA1c, this sometimes suprises the staff they don't seem to be used to Diabetics having an active interest in their cholesterol etc. It would be great to be sent them so I could easily keep a record of them all.
I think there are potentially data protection issues with sending them via SMS/email. Without being too boring and technical, both methods are insecure and I would not be happy for my personal medical information to be sent in this way. But then I'm paranoid and work with IT security, sorry.
BTW I changed your original post so people can click on the link in it and go direct to your site.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb free soups

Hey,

Just from googling I didnt find any shop bought soup that is carb free, low carb, yes, but carb free, no...

Best bet is to make your own.....

As its really only to test your background and short term your best bet is meat and salad, fling in some cheese too.......that will fill you up and have little to no effect on your sugar levels.........

Good luck with the search.....

Love this idea.....

For me personally, receiving my results in this form would not motivate me any more or give me more information, but the formality of this method may be just what alot of diabetics need, who are not really bothered about their condition until the damage is done.......

Look forward to seeing this very soon.......

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Carb free soups

Just a quick question...

I want to find some carb free soups to have for lunch while I'm at work so I can do a check on what my BI is doing but I'm not having much luck with finding a soup in the shops that doesn't include potatoes or pasta.

So, what do you do? Simply just make your own or is there an option in the shops at all?

Many thanks in advance for any replies! ^_^

Thanks David.

Incidentally, there is a sms-text version for this, but that only allows a word description of the numerical result, not pictures. As part of the project we asked local people with diabetes how they would like this info- ~60% wanted it in writing, only 14% wanted text. ~14% wanted an email, but because of local governance worries about email we don't have authority to do that just yet.

When we have made a decision on the design, we can pilot and fine tune. The bands for results are based on UK thresholds for 'action', as applied to everyone with diabetes. The descriptions and the ranges for A1c at each level are printed at the time the individual's result is added. The colours and picture are embedded on a 'personal mailer', rather like a salary slip. So the text can change rapidly, following feedback, whilst we have to stick to the basic design after we order 'n' thousand mailers! You can then why we want to choose a design that people with diabetes will find appealing!

Thanks to the DAFNE community for keeping comments coming!

"Thanks! Your response has been recorded."

I preferred the one on the left. It just seemed to flow better - the "traffic light" view reminded me of Facebook with adverts on the right hand side & made me want to ignore what was in the boxes & I imagine someone might look at the 1 section they're in and totally disregard the other 2 sections which probably isn't a good idea whereas with the more gradual one it gives a better impression of being part of a larger picture & therefore led to me wanting to read each section. I liked that the colours behind the text matched the bit on the right too.

I like this idea because I find I can never remember my HBA1c result & if I had a letter with it on I could always refer back to it & see over time how my result is improving (hopefully) though I suppose its not hard to just note down the result when I'm told & save a tree Razz

Hi everyone. I'm a doc working in diabetes care. I had an idea about getting A1c results directly to UK people with diabetes and the idea has now reached the pilot stage.

There are 2 versions of the artwork to support the project- Qu- how to decide which might work best? Ans- ask people with diabetes their view!

I've set up a page on my Sandwell Diabetes website which explains the project, shows you the 2 versions of the artwork and has a form to submit your views (takes 2 mins).

If some of the DAFNE Online community would kindly give me some feedback, I will be most grateful.

You can find the page for this at www.sandwelldiabetes.nhs.uk

Many thanks! Meanwhile, if you have any other comments/queries/suggestions, please contact me through this forum, or else use my other contact details which are also on the website.
