Topic: General Discussion / You can now subscribe to topics!

Hi all,

We've released a new feature where you can subscribe to topics. All subscribers of a topic will receive an email notification when a reply to that topic is posted. You can subscribe/unsubscribe to a topic by clicking the link underneath the topic's title.

By default, you will automatically be subscribed to topics which you create, or post to. To stop this auto-subscription, visit the Settings page, and click Change Profile. The option you need is at the bottom of that settings page.

This adds flexibility to the forums, allowing you to pick and choose which topics you get notified about - and now you don't even need to post on a topic to receive notifications about it!

Let us know if you have any feedback / enhancement requests.

Topic: Site Development / DAFNE Online iPhone application - help with content/design needed

As a further addition in support of Mark's comments if anyone has experience developing for the platforms that Jez mentioned, and would like to offer their assistance then please get in touch. As mentioned we do this all off our own back, and in our spare time hence the sporadic nature of our updates - so any assistance is gratefully received!

Topic: Site Development / DAFNE Online iPhone application - help with content/design needed

Guys, Sorry but progress with the Android version has not been as fast as I would hope. I have been distracted by the other DAFNE/Diabetes stuff I'm involved with and the Android Development environment is not as mature as that of the iphone. I will let everyone know when I have something that you can test.
I'm afraid there might be an issue Jez with any other versions. The IPR on the app and all related stuff rests with the site NOT with the DAFNE national organisers. I'm sorry if this sounds a bit heavy handed, but we have not been able to use the carb lists in the app because the DAFNE national organisers own the copyright. We are having to sign an agreement to be able to use it in the app. For this reason I see no reason why Simon should give all his hard work to them without a reciprocal agreement. To be honest I don't see them having the resource to get anything developed anyway. Simon and I are IT developers, there is no one in the national office who understands software, nor how you go about getting any kind of application developed.
We hope to develop the app for other platforms eventually, however we both have day jobs and other distractions that stop us working
on the site full time.

Simon, this is getting better and better. It is far more than an electronic DAFNE diary principally because of the way the entered data can be USED to help prospective readings and doses. Ive always believed that the value in coding and recording data can only be in how that information is then put to work. The BG averages by entry type are a great example of this. To include the 'Hypoglycaemia' option would help a person begin to accurately give an answer to "when do you begin to feel hypo?" if a person tests and records hypos in the App.

As this platform is delivering so well an application that the Apple DAFNE graduates can carry in their pocket, the more I think we need to invest in transferring the app to other platforms. This I believe needs to become a development request for the DAFNE organisers nationally and use of the app (appropriate to the user's phone) should be a part of the DAFNE training. I guess we're looking at Android, windows mobile 6.n and 7, and Symbian. If others feel this is important enough then I'd like to hear about it.

Well done Simon.

Jez

Hi there,

I have been diabetic for three years now but never controlled it at all. I used to abuse it as a form of loosing weight whilst burrying my head in the sand aboutany consequences. I have now completed the dafne course and feel impowered to finally control my diabetes. My HbA1c is a shocking 12.1 but I feel I will definately bring it down now. I don't know about anyone else but I found the course absolutely brilliant and think its the best decision I ever made to go on it. Looking forward to my 6 week follow up already!!

Hi all,

As you can see from Thunderbolt's post we have just released the latest app update (1.2) with the following new features:

Diary summary drill-down - Click on one of your Blood Glucose (BG) averages to see your averages for different entry types.

Auto dosage calculation for Quick Acting (QA) insulin - In the settings tab, set 'Auto Calculate QA' to On, and you can specify the ratio you wish to use in the calculation in the Targets section. After entering CP information, the QA dosage will automatically be calculated and saved in the entry.

Let us know if you have any comments or suggestions. Also - if you like the app please rate it on the App Store.

Thunderbolt - yep I'll look into doing that for the next app version.

looks to me that maybe your underestimating you CP's or your insulin ratio isnt right, Log you details and food for a few days, (eat packet food so you know the carb content),
I suspect you need more insulin, perhaps a change to your ratio.

I found that taking Omega 3 Supplements (inc EPA & DHA), can in some people reduce insulin resistance and cause the insulin to work better in your body, This is because the omega 3 first, thins your blood, so the insulin can have more of a affect for the same amount of insulin taken, Its also a great supplement to take because we all have very LOW amounts of Omega 3 in our diet (Unless you eat oily fish alot).

You can buy omega 3 supplements, 3 months supply for like £3-£4.

Also, the problem COULD be you Background Insulin, we need good details for a few days, of what you ate, when and how much, and how much insulin you took. If you have a few days of this, maybe we could spot a pattern to help you control your BG better.

Hope this helps!

Thanks

Hiya Simon...

Just ran the update and I'm more than impressed with what you've done. The ratio calc especially, is exactly what I was after and makes things a mile easier and quicker. I'm sure I'm not the only one to make the odd blunder!

One slight improvement to the calc (my opinion as a lazy beggar) would be that the :1 part would be static as old jelly fingers here has to delete the lot to alter the 1st part. Either that or use of a spinny wheel if people need to alter both parts.

Thanks for all your work...  And putting up with me harping on!

Topic: General Discussion / Fat content

The fat content within the food means it takes longer for your digestive sytem to actually get access to the glucose.......

This is a common problem and what alot of people do including me is to split the dose, say 50:50 before and after the meal, an hour apart.....you can tweak that ratio, as well as the time to find out what suits you the best for each type of high fat meal.

This enables the insulin to theoritcaly have two peaking times, the second peak can then deal with the delayed peak of glucose from the food

As far as I am aware, nuts are so slowly released that the effect on your blood sugar is negligible......

What type of nuts are you eating?

Are you having them with anything else?

I wouldnt normally take for salted nuts, any type.....but it also depends on the quantity as well, but as you say your snacking, so it cant be that much.....

Topic: General Discussion / Fat content

Hi everyone!
I realise this may seem strange but I have noticed a re-occuring pattern. I am finding that even with the correct ratio, if i eat something with a high fat content my BG increases significantly more than normal, making me feel unwell and I don't think that my insulin works properly. I find it the worst with Chinese food and nuts (for A while i thought they were fantastic snack, esp on the un as very little/no CPs! but not so much any more!)
I tried to increase the ratio and even though i felt fine after (other than food coma! ha), but crashed about 7 hours later in bed! i thought about increasing my background but i think that that is a little extreme for some almonds and it is usually too late (to increase dose) if I am having a take away or out to dinner.
Can anyone suggest anything? is there an extra amount if insulin that you would consider injecting for fat content?
I'm really struggling with this and don't really want to give up my sunday take away and snacking nuts!

Thank you!

Topic: General Discussion / not good !! help

I am more than happy to help you with the basics............remember as a graduate you can view and download the handbook if you didnt get one home or have misplaced it...

Also a function I make full use of is the blood glucose diary.....if you transfer your readings, with carb intake, insulin, corrections into that you can actually post it on the forum for all to see and comment...

Look forward to hearing from you...

I don't think the refresher course being referred to in tihs thread is the same as the refresher course I was talking about, yours sounds more like the 6 week and 6 month get togethers after the original course. It may be that your DAFNE centre does them on a continual basis on over a number of years I don't know. Most centres do not do this due to funding I believe.

Kentbabe, your 6 monthly as cancelled because your Educator had problems outside work as well as a very heavy workload. She has promised to contact theose that had their meeting cancelled in the near future. I only know because its my DAFNE Centre and someone I know locally was in the same situation and wanted me to find out what was happening.

Topic: General Discussion / Shortage of test strips

Alan, I wasn't clear enough. For example as you say Accu-chek strips are manufactured in Germany. When they are manufactured they are labelled for each market they are destined for i.e UK packs have UK leaflets and labels, Greek packs have greek labels and leaflets. We in the UK talk to the greek pharmacuetical wholesalers who can sell their strips to us for less than it costs in the UK even with the import costs. We therefore import them into the UK and open the packs, replace the leaflets and stick on an english label and then sell them to UK pharmacies. This is completely legal and normal practice. Its more likely with insulin, on many occasions my novarapid or levemir pens would have white labels stuck on them with english details rather than having the english text 'embossed' onto the pen. This tells me they have been imported. With my current pharmacy the english info is always 'embossed' onto the pens so I know they are not imported. The insulin inside is exactlythe same, its just its has been on a journey.
Given the changes in the euro etc, it is possible the trade is going in the other direction as well, the wholesalers can make money by selling
UK drugs into the rest of the EU and this could potentially cause shortages in the UK market. I wasn't aware it was happening though, my company only imports at the moment we don't export.

What a strange world we live in, Mark. So something can be manufactured in the UK, transported to the EU, relabelled for the UK and then transported back to the UK - is that what you are saying? But the Accu-Chek test strips are manufactured in Germany, so that wouldn't apply to them.
