Hi,

I'm debating going away for a year backpacking to New Zealand but not sure how that will work with my prescriptions. Does anyone have any experience of trying to get a years worth of supplies from their GP?

My GP seems to be less than helpful as a general rule so I haven't asked him directly yet

I have a pump and have contacted roche in New Zealand and they said I can purchase pump supplies at a cost

Thanks,

Lee

I have heard it suggested that if you know well in advance that you are going away for a while it makes sense to build up a stockpile of medicine by gradually accelerating your repeat prescription requests but obviously that won't help much if you are away for as long as a year.

That's what I did but was only going for 3 months so didn't need to take as much. You'd need to consider the amount you'd need to be carrying if you had a whole years worth of supply. I ended up losing my spare insulin and had to buy some when in Oz, it wasn't too bad, just saw a GP and he prescribed it for me.

Hi Michellem,

Was it easy to get insulin then?

Did you have to pay for it?

Cheers,

Lee

Hi Lee,
It was a long time ago but yes it was easy. I just booked a GP appointment, explained what happened (I left my spares in a fridge in Thailand) and he did me a prescription. Yes I had to pay. Think I might have paid to see the GP too. I claimed it back on my health insurance.
