Topic: General Discussion / Anyone off some advice pls?

Hi Billie, I would suggest the weight gain may be because your BI is not right and therefore you are constantly correcting with QA. I would think that looking at your day time readings you may need to adjust your morning BI by 2 units, but to test the theory before you do. Take your standard BI one morning and have Carb free until dinner, compare the BB and the Before Dinner readings, you should have a similar reading for both. If this is not the case and you should have sufficient evidence to increase your morning BI - if you are on Levemir or Lantas, if you are using somethig other ... check the peak and pattern of your background first... If you have a high reading for lunch even if have no CPs you can do a conservative correction or leave if you are not confident to correct. I hope this helps. I have just graduated from DAFNE Course but been using the prinicples for about 6 mths.... wish you the best and reading in target! Smile

Hi Billie,

I am not a graduate yet (doing the course next week) but I have been type 1 since 1978, and I've been working to DAFNE principles for nearly two years now. It seems to me that your morning BI may need adjustment, but you should take advice from your HCP on that. Frankly I don't find your glucose levels that bad, despite my best efforts I am usually at the same levels as you are, and often twice as high! I'm hoping that a pump may solve that.
I find your 115 cp's on the 18th difficult to believe, that is 1.15Kg of carbohydrate! It must have been some sandwhich. I think you may have made an error there somewhere.
Anyway, as you know from the course, the BI must be correct first. You may need to have one or two carb-free meals, with regular blood tests to see if the BI you're taking is keeping your blood glucose steady. If not you may need to adjust the quantity and/or time taken. Only when that is sorted can you think of adjusting the ratios and/or times of your QA. But please talk to your HCP, and don't worry! For a newbie you're doing ok! Smile

Sorry, before I can read your message I have to get rid of this reply box, which came up with your message (twice). I can't delete it so I have to post a message instead.

Hi I'm Billie,
I graduated DAFNE last week. I really came away from the course with much more knowledge and understanding. But now as you can see I am continually getting high readings. I know kneed to adjust my ratio's but have got myself confused as I'm not very good with numbers. I have been t1 4 yrs this August and have never had good control and always had high readings. I'm 28 a mum of 2 and find it hard to gain weight due to constant high results.
Anyone who can point me in the write direct would be greatly appreciated Embarassed Embarassed

Hi Chris,

Glad you've found the app useful thus far, what would we need to add to keep it useful for you?

Welcome Kerry. I did the DAFNE course at the RVH in Belfast in September 2010 (and I was far from the first) so it's not so new to NI as you might think. Hope it all works for you. You'll find lots of support on this forum.

Topic: General Discussion / Hi peeps iv jsu graduated today :)

Hi as i z iv jus graduated today from the course and i am so excited, Iv bn a t1 diabetic 4 the past 13/14 years and hav had alot of bother from it a am from Northern Ireland and DAPHNE has only been phasing in since july 2011, but lookin back on what the info and DAPHNE technique has done to my Blood sugars the past week its gonna be amazing when i get it all tweaked out as i have a cold at the minute its been hard getting exact ratio's etc but fingers crossed next week wil bring it as close to perfection as possible. Im also being considered for a meter which i was a bit unsure about but since researching it and doing the course im 100% up for it. I'm just wondering has anyone else got and downsides to the pump or any opinions on it.

Thanks for reading and and help or advice would be much appreciated Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Where's my motivation gone??

Hi Jenny, I was diagnosed at the age of 10, 43 years ago and since then have done carbohydrate counting, 1 unit of QA (actrapid at the time) lowered me 1mmol and 10g of carbohydcrates increased my mmol by 1 mmol....... that worked briiantly for a long time until I was forced to change insulin, from Monotard and Actrapid to more modern inulins. I was dubious about the DAFNE course, however, I learnt a lot. I know how to count carbohydrates and read packets, however I learnt more about going slowly and how the insulin works, and the fact that other diabetics are going through the same as me! Good luck, we are all in the same boat and letting off steam on here is a great help. I've recently learnt how a woman's cycle affects her BG results and I'm working on finding a pattern....You take care, Christine, Dafne graduate from Northnumerland

I’m trying hard to treat by hypos as advised, as previously i wanted to eat anything and everything when hypoing! But does anyone find that following a hypo their BG spikes?

Hi Shelly
Recently did the DAFNE course (Tasmanian, Ausstralia) I used to find the same - wanted to eat everything when I had a ypo (figured it was my body sending me survival messgaes of a sort). What i do now is get my jelly beans (or alternative) and a CP and sit in a comfy chair somewhere away from the kitchen! Works well, especially at night. Now my BG doesnt spike after.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / change of insulin

theoretically yes.....................

if you can guess when you think the Lantus will be finished from looking at when you last took it, you can comfortably give your Levemir........

I personally would run high for a few hours than risk a hypo..................

When did you used to take the Lantus?..................

Whenever that times comes around again, take your split dose of Levemir....................what split are you starting on......?

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Chocolate Muffins

Assuming you wont be eating your sandwiches till about 12:00 you should really be taking insulin for it.............

Whether you eat half now, or it all now wont matter as far as insulin is concerned......[would you not be able to eat your sandwiches if you ate the full muffin, I know I would have no problems......... Wink ]

Active insulin/insulin on board would need to be considered, but without a meter to help you it can sometimes be tricky..............

My insulinX meter works out my insulin on board by taking my previous dose, in this case your breakfast dose, dividing it up over my preprogrammed insulin activity time, for me 4.5 hours but maximum 5 hours, then subtracting that result from my normal dose calculation...............

Example

6 units of insulin for breakfast @7:00am

Decide to have muffin @9:00am [5.5 units]

BG@9:00 - 8.5mmol/l

Ratio @9:00 - 1.5:1

Therefore dose calculation;

5.5 x 1.5 - 8.25 [8 units]

8 units + 1 units correction for 8.5 BG reading - 3 units active insulin = 6 units

you wouldn't normally consider correcting when your previous dose is still working but the meter includes this..

The active insulin calculations is 6 unit over 4.5hours[270 minutes], so 0.022 units/minute.............

2hours have elapsed, meaning 2.64units [0.022x 120minutes] have been used, 6 - 2.64 = 3.36 [3 units....]

WOW, that a lot of calculations...............

This has worked for me most of the time, but the only way to find out would be to test and see the results, remember not to correct at lunchtime...........

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Chocolate Muffins

I've just been given a chocolate muffin, its 55g Carbs, i have a steady food regime and was wondering whether i should eat it all now, or eat half now and the other half this afternoon as a snack. I have my normal sandwiches for lunch and obviously dont want to waste them, so if i eat half now when i do my BG i could compensate with extra insulin. confused :{

Topic: General Discussion / New Needles

As regards your suspicions over cost, the shorter needles (up to 6.1 mm) are actually more expensive than the longer ones (6.2mm or more) under the NHS Drug Tariff.
