Topic: Questions for HCPs / Ratios and compensating I would also take 1 unit for that scenario....................However, for me, the correction factor I use depends on my blood sugar level, so the higher it is, the more units I need to get me back down...............this method had evolved from the theory that the higher you are, the more resistant you are to insulin. And was concluded with lots of testing, trial and error on my part............. My corrections are as follows; <10mmol/l - 1 unit drops 2.5mmol/l 10 - 13mmol/l - 1 unit drops 2mmol/l 13 - 17mmol/l - 1 unit drops 1.5mmol/l >17mmol/l - 1 unit drops 1mmol/l In fact it could go further but I am seldomly over 17, just every now and again........... I personally believe everyone experiences this behavior, but would not tell you to adopt it without doing your own personal investigations.......... |

I tend to use 1 unit of QA for every 3mmol above my target. So in the instance you have quoted, I would be adding 1 extra unit of QA to my dosage. It is a ball point figure for me; I use this at any time of the day or before bed, but as with anything in life - we are all different, and it may take a few attempts before you find the ratio which suits you. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Ratios and compensating HiI have not done a DAFNE course (My health authority doesnt have the budget) but am trying to pick up on various DAFNE odds and sods. One question i would like to ask is when calculating the amount of insulin QA to take, if you have set a target of say 6.8mmol for breakfast and the reading is 8.8 what factor do you use to increase the insulin in addition to the existing ratio? and is this a ball park figure depending on how high or low the reading is? Regards ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Chocolate Muffins Thanks for all your advice. In the end i basically picked at the muffin without any adjustments to my insulin and it didnt really make any difference, maybe one or two notches on the geiger counter. Between meals i usually eat bananas or an apple or pear and even the occasional Frosties breakfast bar. But sometimes, especially working in a office, someone brings in cakes and i mean it is teamwork isnt it and i have to do my duty to the team. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Chocolate Muffins
Hello, I remeber from my DAFNE course last year that if you had a snack in between your meals then I was advised not to correct with QA as there will still be QA in your system sunce your previous meal (I am on Novorapid QA whcih lasts for 4-5 hrs) and therefore was advised that provided you had covered your previous meal with the correct amount of QA then there would be no need to correct when eating ther snack so I generally do not correct when eating a snack 1-2 hrs in between my meals to avoid a hypo. Hope this helps ![]() Cheers, Anele. |

Topic: Site Development / ONLINE DIARY LINK When navigating to the online diary.........DAFNE Tools>My Blood Glucose Diary it takes you to the URL http://www.dafneonline.co.uk/diary/index This then produces an error message; "The page you were looking for doesn't exist. You may have mistyped the address or the page may have moved. If you clicked on a link and were directed to here then please let us know about the problem via email. Click the back button on your browser to return to the previous page." To gain access I simply remove the word index from the URL in the address bar........ An issue needing fixed none the less...... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Dafne & sports nutrition. How does it work? I really dont have the experience to give good advice, however the DAFNE section on exercise would suggest that you reduce your insulin dose.................so this could mean dropping your previous bolus injection with your last meal and/or reducing your basal dose also..............with prolonged activity that I assume your training and participation in a 10k swim would involve, a combination of both of these reduction will help prevent hypos during the event and up to 24 hours later as the muscles replenish their store of glucose...............And with any activity like this you should always have a truck load of hypo resolve just in case...... There is also the website www.runsweet.com that provides a much more detailed explanation of how to manage blood sugars when exercising/playing sports etc........... good luck.......... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Dafne & sports nutrition. How does it work? Hi folks. Have a question about Dafne and exercise. Have to admit, I kind of gave up training after I started Dafne 'cos I couldn't get my head around all the new ideas regarding exercise and it felt like the ideas were very black and white. Well, it is the middle of summer over here and I've just heard about a ocean swim I'd like to do and I thought I'd like to try and do it well. its a 10km swim and last time it took me 4 hr 20 and my tests weren't great. this was pre dafne. I've found Dafne doesn't talk much about managing CP's while you're training/racing. For those of you who dont know, the general rule of thumb is that you consume the equivilant of your weight , in grams, of CHO so I try and have about 60 gr carbs/hr when i'm either training or racing over 2 hours. What would be the Dafne approach to this and what do others do? If there are any othera who do triathlons or longish swims especially, I'd be really keen to hear from you. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Chocolate Muffins It is a lot, the main point is really acknowledging that there may still be insulin working and that taking the full wack for whatever snack your hving may result in a hypo...........the less carbs in your snack, the more succesful you will be in dosing it in between meals...................... ![]() |

Thank you so much for advice. I know my results are not as high as have been in the past which is good. I think your right I def messed up somewhere with 115 cp's lol. My BG was lowered the day I grauduated as I kept having hypos at night, so this is why I had thought change ratio's. But thanks for the pointers and going to do carb free tomorrow hopefully that will help. Will let you all know how it goes. Many thanks Billie |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE Follow-on Training
Jenny, Whilst DUAG is representing graduates from the UK & Ireland, it will be interesting to know what goes on elsewhere in the DAFNE community. One of the questions covers where you were trained, so we can see whether your feedback is any different to graduates over here. |

Topic: General Discussion / carb free foods
There is no guarantee that because there is not an entry in the DAFNE carb book that there are no CPs. It keeps the costs down to exclude 0 CP items, but does leave this uncertainty on why there isn't an entry. I have raised this with DAFNE team from my own experience and cost was given as the reason for not changing. If you find this a problem then let me know and if there are many who want this changed then I'll raise again with DAFNE, |
