Topic: General Discussion / Dafne & sports nutrition. How does it work? I really dont have the experience to give good advice, however the DAFNE section on exercise would suggest that you reduce your insulin dose.................so this could mean dropping your previous bolus injection with your last meal and/or reducing your basal dose also..............with prolonged activity that I assume your training and participation in a 10k swim would involve, a combination of both of these reduction will help prevent hypos during the event and up to 24 hours later as the muscles replenish their store of glucose...............And with any activity like this you should always have a truck load of hypo resolve just in case...... There is also the website www.runsweet.com that provides a much more detailed explanation of how to manage blood sugars when exercising/playing sports etc........... good luck.......... |

Topic: General Discussion / Dafne & sports nutrition. How does it work? Hi folks. Have a question about Dafne and exercise. Have to admit, I kind of gave up training after I started Dafne 'cos I couldn't get my head around all the new ideas regarding exercise and it felt like the ideas were very black and white. Well, it is the middle of summer over here and I've just heard about a ocean swim I'd like to do and I thought I'd like to try and do it well. its a 10km swim and last time it took me 4 hr 20 and my tests weren't great. this was pre dafne. I've found Dafne doesn't talk much about managing CP's while you're training/racing. For those of you who dont know, the general rule of thumb is that you consume the equivilant of your weight , in grams, of CHO so I try and have about 60 gr carbs/hr when i'm either training or racing over 2 hours. What would be the Dafne approach to this and what do others do? If there are any othera who do triathlons or longish swims especially, I'd be really keen to hear from you. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Chocolate Muffins It is a lot, the main point is really acknowledging that there may still be insulin working and that taking the full wack for whatever snack your hving may result in a hypo...........the less carbs in your snack, the more succesful you will be in dosing it in between meals...................... |

Topic: General Discussion / Anyone off some advice pls? I would probably agree that your background still needs tweaked..................I dont know anyone that came away from the course with their BI dose right, it just takes more than 5 days to get right.................. So get on to the BI dose checking, overnight, carb free meals etc............ Onced you have some more results, come back and you can discuss them some more........... |

Thank you so much for advice. I know my results are not as high as have been in the past which is good. I think your right I def messed up somewhere with 115 cp's lol. My BG was lowered the day I grauduated as I kept having hypos at night, so this is why I had thought change ratio's. But thanks for the pointers and going to do carb free tomorrow hopefully that will help. Will let you all know how it goes. Many thanks Billie |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE Follow-on Training
Jenny, Whilst DUAG is representing graduates from the UK & Ireland, it will be interesting to know what goes on elsewhere in the DAFNE community. One of the questions covers where you were trained, so we can see whether your feedback is any different to graduates over here. |

Topic: General Discussion / carb free foods
There is no guarantee that because there is not an entry in the DAFNE carb book that there are no CPs. It keeps the costs down to exclude 0 CP items, but does leave this uncertainty on why there isn't an entry. I have raised this with DAFNE team from my own experience and cost was given as the reason for not changing. If you find this a problem then let me know and if there are many who want this changed then I'll raise again with DAFNE, |

Topic: General Discussion / Anyone off some advice pls? Hi Billie, I would suggest the weight gain may be because your BI is not right and therefore you are constantly correcting with QA. I would think that looking at your day time readings you may need to adjust your morning BI by 2 units, but to test the theory before you do. Take your standard BI one morning and have Carb free until dinner, compare the BB and the Before Dinner readings, you should have a similar reading for both. If this is not the case and you should have sufficient evidence to increase your morning BI - if you are on Levemir or Lantas, if you are using somethig other ... check the peak and pattern of your background first... If you have a high reading for lunch even if have no CPs you can do a conservative correction or leave if you are not confident to correct. I hope this helps. I have just graduated from DAFNE Course but been using the prinicples for about 6 mths.... wish you the best and reading in target! |

Topic: General Discussion / Anyone off some advice pls? Hi Billie,I am not a graduate yet (doing the course next week) but I have been type 1 since 1978, and I've been working to DAFNE principles for nearly two years now. It seems to me that your morning BI may need adjustment, but you should take advice from your HCP on that. Frankly I don't find your glucose levels that bad, despite my best efforts I am usually at the same levels as you are, and often twice as high! I'm hoping that a pump may solve that. I find your 115 cp's on the 18th difficult to believe, that is 1.15Kg of carbohydrate! It must have been some sandwhich. I think you may have made an error there somewhere. Anyway, as you know from the course, the BI must be correct first. You may need to have one or two carb-free meals, with regular blood tests to see if the BI you're taking is keeping your blood glucose steady. If not you may need to adjust the quantity and/or time taken. Only when that is sorted can you think of adjusting the ratios and/or times of your QA. But please talk to your HCP, and don't worry! For a newbie you're doing ok! |

Topic: General Discussion / Anyone off some advice pls? Hi I'm Billie,I graduated DAFNE last week. I really came away from the course with much more knowledge and understanding. But now as you can see I am continually getting high readings. I know kneed to adjust my ratio's but have got myself confused as I'm not very good with numbers. I have been t1 4 yrs this August and have never had good control and always had high readings. I'm 28 a mum of 2 and find it hard to gain weight due to constant high results. Anyone who can point me in the write direct would be greatly appreciated |

Topic: General Discussion / Hi peeps iv jsu graduated today :) Welcome Kerry. I did the DAFNE course at the RVH in Belfast in September 2010 (and I was far from the first) so it's not so new to NI as you might think. Hope it all works for you. You'll find lots of support on this forum. |

Topic: General Discussion / Hi peeps iv jsu graduated today :) Hi as i z iv jus graduated today from the course and i am so excited, Iv bn a t1 diabetic 4 the past 13/14 years and hav had alot of bother from it a am from Northern Ireland and DAPHNE has only been phasing in since july 2011, but lookin back on what the info and DAPHNE technique has done to my Blood sugars the past week its gonna be amazing when i get it all tweaked out as i have a cold at the minute its been hard getting exact ratio's etc but fingers crossed next week wil bring it as close to perfection as possible. Im also being considered for a meter which i was a bit unsure about but since researching it and doing the course im 100% up for it. I'm just wondering has anyone else got and downsides to the pump or any opinions on it.Thanks for reading and and help or advice would be much appreciated Kerry |
