Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypos when I wake Yes, pretty much....................Even if your slightly higher before bed, don't correct, you should then wake within 1 or 2 mmol/l If not, adjustment is needed...... You can also test your daytime dose by missing meals or having a carb free meal, this will let you know if your daytime dose needs adjusting........... When was the last time you adjusted your background........ |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / NEUROPATHY - advice please For the past 4 years I have had increasing difficulty getting about because of the pain I get in my right buttocks and thigh when I am walking. The pain is so intense I can hardly breathe and doesn't go away when I rest. The muscles seem to go into cramp and I have difficulty straightening my leg for ages afterwards. It was suggested by the rheumatologist that this could be caused by neuropathy as the pain seemed to follow the path of Shingles which I had had prior to these problems starting. Now I seem to be at an impasse with no one able to help. The tablets prescribed by my GP either don't work at all or have intolerable side effects. The doctor at the Diabetes clinic wants me to see a vascular specialist despite me having no problems with the lower legs and feet. My symptoms fit Proximal Motor Neuropathy (according to Internet research) or Diabetic Amyotrophy, but no one seems to have heard of these conditions. Is there anyone on the Forum who has similar problems or who has any suggestions as to what I could do next? Are there any specialists in Diabetic Neuropathy anywhere in the UK? |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypos when I wake I'm on levemir background insulin and I'm taking 26 units 2ce a day at 12 hour intervals....I was injecting 28 units but I've slowly been decreasing this so I think this might need to be looked further like you said....so the idea is to inject my novorapid for my evening meal and then not eat anything before bed and not inject any more novorapid and keep testing in the early hours? |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypos when I wake Increased activity, as you say, will increase sensitivity to insulin, and decrease resistance, as your muscles grow and create more doors for the insulin to enter.....I would advise, unprofessionally of course, that you should carry out background tests overnight, so , no food before bed or insulin, this leaves just your background dose working. Set an alarm for 3am to test and record. If you are up for it you could test before this, maybe every couple of hours etc............ Doing this will paint a picture of what your background dose currently is doing to your blood glucose overnight......... What background insulin are you on? Depending on whether it is split or not, you may need to consider adjusting the background dose for the both the AM and PM portions of the day.......... |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypos when I wake Hi,I have just signed up to this site as I'm getting quite worried. For the last few weeks I've been waking up every morning with readings of 3-4 mmol/l and generally I've been having more hypos than usual. I started weight training and doing taekwondo at the start of t he year but it's only now that I'm seeing the incresed hypo occurence and I also believe that my insulin sensitivity has increased ( I inject less per meal) Please could someone advise on how to combat the lows I get every morning...I had a really bad episode last week where I was sleep walking..babbling and generally acting strangely because I had had such a sever hypo and only due to 3 bottles of luzocade and some sugar in milk did I eventually come round |

Topic: General Discussion / Levemir I also take mine later in the evening so as to give me more insulin in the early hours to combat the dawn phenomenon......however a 12 hour split is definitely a good place to start as if that split does work for you, you will be getting the best use out of it........... everyone is different.......... Welcome to the forum Anni........... |

Topic: General Discussion / Levemir I've just completed DAFNE and also take Levemir in split doses.Although i concur with the previous post, i thought it worth saying that i was advised that i should be taking pm dose later in the evening than i was, so 10pm rather than 7.30pm. This made my doses closer together than 12 hours, but i was told that as long as am and pm doses were more than 6 hours apart, that it would be better for me to inject BI at breakfast and bed. Also, apparently Levemir doesn't run for 12 hours, only 18-20 hours, which is why it's better to split the dose. Hope this small addition is of some help or interest! |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android app
Glad to help. Just avoid those settings on the webpage and it should work. Have contacted the maker of the app, and he's aware of the problem so will get a fixed version at some point. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android app Hughesy:I think it's related to what I said before - on another thread http://www.dafneonline.co.uk/forums/5/topics/1470?page=3#post_10810 Simon posted than some entry types are on the website, but not the database for the app, so it causes problems. If you have any of the following entry types, it might crash. After Breakfast After Dinner After Lunch Before Supper After Supper Illness Fasting You could test to see if that's the problem by altering the last days results on the web page and then downloading only the last day's on the app. I tested it and it works fine if you don't have any of those entry types. Hopefully the app will be updated soon. The iphone version was changed in march and works, just have to wait for them to get round to the android version. |

Topic: General Discussion / Pump cartridge issue The increase in hypos was insignificant over time.I have suggested Metformin several times but for whatever reason the specialists have not been enthusiastic. They basically think it is not the answer. Current advice is to keep doing what I am doing! I am not putting on weight. Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / Pump cartridge issue If you get more hypos as a result of exercising that's when the doses of insulin should drop..............so there may be some reduction of dose to the previous meal and/or a reduction in basal dose, it all depends on what kind of activity is taking place [intensity/duration]............ But this might not make a noticeable drop of dose, at least not straight away, I suppose you would need to be consistent with your activity to make any long term dose reductions....... Have you been offered anything like metformin to combat the high resistance..........? |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android app I have now added user name and password, checked the box for uploading. So hopefully this will allow me to have record of my readings on line as well as on the app. Prefer recording readings on app as I didn't keep accurate or regular records in diary .As I almost always have phone with me or close by,my records are far more accurate and up to date.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android app Eugene. The app is usually set up to update automatically, you have to make sure that the user name and password are entered in the settings. To update manually, goto the Entries view, and press the menu button on your phone, there is an option to upload. Liking the app, seems easier to add and has all the things I need, the only problem I'm having is downloading entries from the website to my phone. which comes up with an error message and crashes the app. Another post I read said it was to do with missing options for entry type on the app. Its fixed for the iphone, how soon will it be fixed on android? Am going on holiday in a few months, and would find it useful to have an off-line record with out having to mess with exporting records and the like. |

Topic: General Discussion / Pump cartridge issue It was sarcastic...very sarcastic! It seems like such a simple suggestion,I have to work very hard not to put on weight. At one time it was explained to me that insulin resistance...high levels of insulin were a major contributor to weight gain, and I could accept the situation or not. I was told it was important not to put on weight so my calorie intake is relatively quite low. i have tried the exercise route but in spite of working at it I really did not notice any reduction in insulin required. Marginally more hypos but that was all. Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / Pump cartridge issue When you say you haven't tried to lose weight, was that sarcastic, or have you actually not tried...........Do you feel you need to lose weight...........? If you feel you do, then this will almost certainly be playing a part in your insulin requirements.............. Resistance to insulin will drop as the muscles become stronger and more active, so that's all your muscles, not just the arms and legs etc.... |

Topic: General Discussion / Pump cartridge issue If I reduce the carbs even further I get very hungry (and angry). Most people I have talked to say (simply!) lose weight....and I haven't tried! I believe it is largely the demon insulin resistance/insulin sensitivity!I believe all cartridges here in Oz are 200mL. At the moment I have gone back to just using the pump (after 3 weeks of trying to time changers to breakfast every third day) and changing when ever necessary. Next one due between 23:00 and 01:00....depends what I have for dinner. I am going to Montezumas to celebrate my g'son's birthday. Eat carbs and change at 20:00!!!!! Thanks, Helen |
