Topic: General Discussion / The Best Meter?
Hi Novorpaidboi, I've never heard of the freestyle insulinX - sounds cool though as it calculates your dose ![]() I'm quite happy doing the calculations however I do like my gadgets and the Xceed is looking rather dull and boring and looking to be getting traded in for the Contour ![]() Thanks for your comments ![]() Cheers, Anele. |

Topic: General Discussion / The Best Meter? Hi Gill,Thanks so much for your comments ![]() Sounds like the Contour is a hit given you only use your Xceed for checking for Ketones ![]() The only tiny thing that I didn't like about the contour and the glucmen is that the strips come in a tub rather than the individual strips for the Xceed which makes the carry pouch a bit more bulkier than the Xceed but that is me being picky but find my handbag is full of diabetes kit that I take everywhere I go which makes it a bit easier to cram in the Xceed but that is me being picky as I said ![]() How often do you have to charge the Contour as not needed with the Xceed (as you know ![]() Cheers, Anele.

Topic: General Discussion / The Best Meter?
Hi Anele46, I'm currently using the Contour USB meter which i personally think is fabulous! If you have a pc then you can download the Glucofacts deluxe software and basically with your meter just plug and play ie download all your readings, graphs etc. You can of course just use the meter as an ordinary meter. The finger pricker for my Optium Xceed died on me and i had to get another one. I've still got my Optium Xceed meter incase i need it for ketones. I much prefer the finger pricker which came with my Contour USB meter, it seems much stronger. I don't have any problems getting lancets or strips for the Contour USB meter. Gill ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / The Best Meter? Hi all,I was wondering what is the most favoured Meter? ![]() I currently use an Optium Xceed but my dad is a Pharmacist and he gave me a Glumen GM to try and have also received a free Contour USB meter recently. I haven't used the Contour yet and have only used the Glucomen once but certainly the finger pricker device for the Glucomen is really good and the Contour one looks good also but haven't tried that yet. Certainly, I find that the original finger pricker device that came with the Xceed was sore (for me anyway) but I got a new Blue one when on my DAFNE course last year which is better and thankfully takes the same lancets. I like the Xceed as it also takes Ketone test strips but thankfully I haven't had to use them much so not sure how much of a difference that would make when comparing the other meters? Has anyone struggled getting lancets or strips for either the Glucomen or ther Contour as so far I've never had an issue with getting strips for the Xceed? Any comments/thoughts would be greatly appreciated ![]() |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypos when I wake you got it one Kev, basically eliminating the carbs and quick acting insulin so as to make accurate conclusions about your background, which should be holding you steady........it does seem as though your evening Levemir is way too much. The good thing about Levemir is the effects of change are seen instantly, so you can adjust dose every day really, although you really want to go a few days to find a pattern..... |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypos when I wake ah right, I've actually done that...the last couple of nights I've gone to sleep at 12 and 13.4 mmol/l and still woken up with 3.3-3.7 mmol/lthe last time I adjusted was last week...maybe more adjustment required? when I miss meals...does that mean I simple see how my glucose level is doing without carbs..so for example..I miss breakfast and then test at hour intervals for 4-5 hours to see how the previous levemir injection is affecting my sugars? |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypos when I wake Yes, pretty much....................Even if your slightly higher before bed, don't correct, you should then wake within 1 or 2 mmol/l If not, adjustment is needed...... You can also test your daytime dose by missing meals or having a carb free meal, this will let you know if your daytime dose needs adjusting........... When was the last time you adjusted your background........ |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / NEUROPATHY - advice please For the past 4 years I have had increasing difficulty getting about because of the pain I get in my right buttocks and thigh when I am walking. The pain is so intense I can hardly breathe and doesn't go away when I rest. The muscles seem to go into cramp and I have difficulty straightening my leg for ages afterwards. It was suggested by the rheumatologist that this could be caused by neuropathy as the pain seemed to follow the path of Shingles which I had had prior to these problems starting. Now I seem to be at an impasse with no one able to help. The tablets prescribed by my GP either don't work at all or have intolerable side effects. The doctor at the Diabetes clinic wants me to see a vascular specialist despite me having no problems with the lower legs and feet. My symptoms fit Proximal Motor Neuropathy (according to Internet research) or Diabetic Amyotrophy, but no one seems to have heard of these conditions. Is there anyone on the Forum who has similar problems or who has any suggestions as to what I could do next? Are there any specialists in Diabetic Neuropathy anywhere in the UK? |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypos when I wake I'm on levemir background insulin and I'm taking 26 units 2ce a day at 12 hour intervals....I was injecting 28 units but I've slowly been decreasing this so I think this might need to be looked further like you said....so the idea is to inject my novorapid for my evening meal and then not eat anything before bed and not inject any more novorapid and keep testing in the early hours? |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypos when I wake Increased activity, as you say, will increase sensitivity to insulin, and decrease resistance, as your muscles grow and create more doors for the insulin to enter.....I would advise, unprofessionally of course, that you should carry out background tests overnight, so , no food before bed or insulin, this leaves just your background dose working. Set an alarm for 3am to test and record. If you are up for it you could test before this, maybe every couple of hours etc............ Doing this will paint a picture of what your background dose currently is doing to your blood glucose overnight......... What background insulin are you on? Depending on whether it is split or not, you may need to consider adjusting the background dose for the both the AM and PM portions of the day.......... |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypos when I wake Hi,I have just signed up to this site as I'm getting quite worried. For the last few weeks I've been waking up every morning with readings of 3-4 mmol/l and generally I've been having more hypos than usual. I started weight training and doing taekwondo at the start of t he year but it's only now that I'm seeing the incresed hypo occurence and I also believe that my insulin sensitivity has increased ( I inject less per meal) Please could someone advise on how to combat the lows I get every morning...I had a really bad episode last week where I was sleep walking..babbling and generally acting strangely because I had had such a sever hypo and only due to 3 bottles of luzocade and some sugar in milk did I eventually come round |

Topic: General Discussion / Levemir I also take mine later in the evening so as to give me more insulin in the early hours to combat the dawn phenomenon......however a 12 hour split is definitely a good place to start as if that split does work for you, you will be getting the best use out of it........... everyone is different.......... Welcome to the forum Anni........... ![]() |

Topic: DAFNE Graduate Group (DGG) / Neuropothy -advice please Hi hazbol,This is very interesting to me as it could explain the increasing pain in my hips, even though the joints are ok. I hope someone is able to provide you with helpful information. It would probably help me too. Kind regards, Roger |

Topic: General Discussion / Levemir I've just completed DAFNE and also take Levemir in split doses.Although i concur with the previous post, i thought it worth saying that i was advised that i should be taking pm dose later in the evening than i was, so 10pm rather than 7.30pm. This made my doses closer together than 12 hours, but i was told that as long as am and pm doses were more than 6 hours apart, that it would be better for me to inject BI at breakfast and bed. Also, apparently Levemir doesn't run for 12 hours, only 18-20 hours, which is why it's better to split the dose. Hope this small addition is of some help or interest! |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android app
Glad to help. Just avoid those settings on the webpage and it should work. Have contacted the maker of the app, and he's aware of the problem so will get a fixed version at some point. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android app Hughesy:I think it's related to what I said before - on another thread http://www.dafneonline.co.uk/forums/5/topics/1470?page=3#post_10810 Simon posted than some entry types are on the website, but not the database for the app, so it causes problems. If you have any of the following entry types, it might crash. After Breakfast After Dinner After Lunch Before Supper After Supper Illness Fasting You could test to see if that's the problem by altering the last days results on the web page and then downloading only the last day's on the app. I tested it and it works fine if you don't have any of those entry types. Hopefully the app will be updated soon. The iphone version was changed in march and works, just have to wait for them to get round to the android version. |

Topic: General Discussion / Pump cartridge issue The increase in hypos was insignificant over time.I have suggested Metformin several times but for whatever reason the specialists have not been enthusiastic. They basically think it is not the answer. Current advice is to keep doing what I am doing! I am not putting on weight. Helen |
