Topic: General Discussion / Gluten Free Bread sorry are you talking about this site or the actual book ? The CP value is 1-1.5, in my electronic copy that I did the site from its 1- and then 1.5 on the next line so the 1-1.5 has got split over 2 lines. So to sum up its not a special symbol it just has part missing for some reason. |

Topic: General Discussion / Metformin Should have mentioned that I take 2 x 500 mg daily. Was told that I could take up to 3000 mg daily. But for me, stepping up the dose gradually had no beneficial effect on ratios so have stuck with 1 g per day. Metformin adversely affected my digestion at higher dose anyway.Regards Garry |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Pringles I find it hard to believe that according to the DAFNE carbohydrate counting book, 12 Pringles = 1 CP, whereas a normal size bag of crisps i.e. thinner,not as many is 1.25 CP? |

Topic: General Discussion / Prescriptions Can't you just order your repeats by phone or online, and if necessary get someone else to pick them up? It's worth asking your GP though...not sure what the rules are, the pharmacist may not be too keen on ordering in so much to keep in stock though...and all depends on the supplier's rules too. |

Topic: General Discussion / Prescriptions My local Lloyd's Pharmacy does a 'Prescription Collection' service - so I can pop my prescription request form into the GPs at the weekend and then collect the stuff from Lloyd's the following Saturday. Doesn't your chemist do this? |

Topic: General Discussion / Nut allergy and diabetes Just curious to know what other diabetics think...While on a plane, I realised that I had forgotten to put glucose tablets in my handbag  All that I had was a Snickers bar. OK I didn't panic, there were sugary drinks on the plane of course and other forms of sugar etc etc if the worst came to the worst. Then an announcement came on saying that there was someone on board who had a nut allergy so could we all refrain from eating anything with nuts in. Now no offence to those with nut allergies and I know it's an unlikely scenario, but what would happen if I was feeling low and all I had was this Snickers and I was stuck in a confined space with no other form of sugar?

Gosh Phil, as a child you were much better controlled than my mum......she really didn't look after herself and was always in and out of hospital. I remember her hypo treat was a bowl of melted maltesers and chocolate!!! No chance I would have that but def nice to have a bit of chocolate (though not for a hypo, Jelly babies work much better )Totally agree, DAFNE would never work with usinf syringes and bottles for every meal... The pens sure make life a lot easier Anele. |

Topic: General Discussion / How long do meters last? Anele,Mixing insulin from 2 bottles into a single syringe with no air bubbles! Things aren't great now, but they're alot better, DAFNE wouldn't be possible if you had to use syringes and bottles for every meal. You had to inject once or twice a day and eat accordingly As a child if I was hungry outside of food time it was cheese or ham, no carbs, but if I wasn't hungry at food time tough! I started home doing DAFNE when I got a NovoPen inthe early 90s Phil |

I remeber my mum using the old BM strips and matching the colour for the results.....and using the nasty Orange Tipped Syringes and mixing her insulins from the bottles in the fridge...........glad we don't have to do that anymore, medicine and kit for Diabetics have come a long way!!  Anele. |

Topic: General Discussion / How long do meters last? Hi,1661 tests, 4.5 ish tests a day, being pedantic but how do you do 0.5 of a test? I do 5 tests on a good day with more like 10 when hypo alot (yo-yo), they must rub there hands at those numbers Just moved from a OneTouch to an Accu-chek so I bet J & J won't be happy at loosing that income, I ran out of test strips once while out for the day so popped in boots to buy some, a pack of 50 was £17 (I cost the NHS about £1241 a year in strips alone), this was probably 5 to 10 years ago too. Topic: General Discussion / Metformin Thanks for that that is helpful, I suppose if it doesn't have any proven adverse reaction then I should stick to it, it's just that it's frustrating - I know it's not a instant weight loss wonder drug but I thought I would have seen SOME loss, I take quite a few drugs, for blood pressure, cholesterol, thyroid, and I know how drugs can make you put on weight so I want to be sure that I'm not taking anything I don't need to, but from what yu say metformin is needed. |

Topic: General Discussion / Metformin I started Metformin use just over 14 months ago following discussion with my consultant who had concerns about my insulin resistance.Ratios, which at the time of starting were 2.0 to 2.5:1 have not come down much, as now are 2.2, 2.0 and 2.0, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Took a spell of 10 days off them, to see what impact it had....and would have had to go back to my old ratio regime. So have stuck with them. Although not a long term user yet....having been used by Type 2s for decades without adverse reports....I would like to think we are on safe ground. Regards Garry |

Topic: General Discussion / Metformin It basically decreases insulin resistance and I think suppresses appetite, and therefore helps weight loss, and prevents weight gain....the specifics are unknown to me but I believe it decreases absorption of glucose into the blood and calms the livers secretion also as well as increasing the bodies effective use of insulin.... I wouldn't know how to assess its need either as I am not a doctor, but the only way to find out would be to come off it, you can ask your doctor this. I personally would try without the doctors consent, but I wouldn't advise that to anyone else......

Topic: General Discussion / Metformin I would be interested to hear from Type 1s who are on metformin. I've been on it for years, and as I understand it, it is to help with blood glucose control but also to help you lose weight or at least keep weight down? Well I've never lost ANY weight on it, ok it might be helping me keep it down but I do wonder, if my blood glucose is well controlled, what is the point of me being on it. I mean, how do you know, how do the professionals know, if you should still be on it. |
