Just curious to know what other diabetics think...

While on a plane, I realised that I had forgotten to put glucose tablets in my handbag Crying or Very sad All that I had was a Snickers bar. OK I didn't panic, there were sugary drinks on the plane of course and other forms of sugar etc etc if the worst came to the worst. Then an announcement came on saying that there was someone on board who had a nut allergy so could we all refrain from eating anything with nuts in. Now no offence to those with nut allergies and I know it's an unlikely scenario, but what would happen if I was feeling low and all I had was this Snickers and I was stuck in a confined space with no other form of sugar?

Well, a snicker actually is not a good treatment for a hypo due to the fat content, it would not be absorbed enough, now, don't get me wrong I have treated hypos with such items and it worked fine, not as quick, but worked none the less.

As there is other forms of quicker sugar you could obtain I would use them, as the nut allergy could be severe, and the allergic response could be fatal if there is no medication present. The reality is that when diabetics go low, the liver does start the recovery process, its not how the hypo should be treated, but it happens. So if there was sugary drinks available I would inform the stewards that I may need quick access in the event of a hypo.

However if the scenario you presented happened, where there was no other sugar, and this would be very unlikely and irresponsible, then I would go as far away from the nut guy and eat away........... Wink

Yeah I know it's unlikely, it's just that my instinctive reaction when they made that announcement on the plane was total indignation i.e. "i'm a diabetic! I need my sugar!" lol but it would be interesting to know who takes precedence. Horrible thing to discuss really so I shall shut up again..... Mad

Who takes precedence would be entirely down to you, however, being a DAFNE graduate, you should not have a snickers for hypo resolve, that's the way I see it anyway......... Wink
