Topic: General Discussion / What would you say about DAFNE :?: I've only completed the DAFNE course this week but already I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Now I know the theory and reasoning behind all the things so many health care professionals have told me for the past 11 years, I now know I need to do them.. and I have the skills to control my diabetes confidently and effectively myself. |

Topic: General Discussion / CP Diary enteries You would put it asRound cps to 90 so 9 cps 1:1 ratio would be 9 units QA |

Topic: General Discussion / Missed meal problem Really messed up here.Have lunch at 2:30pm - 3:00pm then tea at 7:00pm - 7:30pm however the day has gone on and am just having lunch/tea whatever you want to call it. So I'm missing a meal & QA injection. Take BI at 10:00pm. I'm off out this evening also but not for a meal just to see a gig. BS was 12.8 which I presume is because I've not eaten since breakfast. Had QA dose for meal and a correction. What would you do in this situation? Thanks for any help |

Topic: General Discussion / Lantus - decreasing rapidly
I've also not had any changes with food ie still eating the same things/amounts. Also no increased activity. Daytime levels don't seem to have been effected. Maybe like you say it could be seasonal changes. I might decrease mine by just another 2u either tonight or tomorrow night. |

Topic: General Discussion / Lantus - decreasing rapidly I am going through similar changes to you, although I haven't had to drop as many as you, maybe 11 units dropped over the AM and PM BI dose...It could be seasonal changes that are contributing. I thought BI would go up in winter though due to your body working harder behind the scenes to keep warm. But its not working out that way for me. I maybe thought activity levels were also contributing, but again, as the winter approached my levels decreased as I favored staying in the house to going out to exercise..... So I am at a loss. It just has to be put down to changes that are unexplained.......... The good thing is your insulin levels are dropping, it may seem scary, but in the long term its good....... Are you woken in the night with lows or is it just the morning when you normally wake.......? Has your daytime levels been effected with the reduction of BI? |

Topic: General Discussion / Lantus - decreasing rapidly Had to increase my lantus/BI in October due to lots of high (teens/20's/30's) BS levels.During November have had to keep decreasing due to lots of hypos - how much longer can this carry on? At this rate I'll be taking no BI - frightening.com! Oct 26u BI 8th 28u - increased 17th 30u 23rd 36u Nov 1st 40u 2nd new BI pen? 5th 42u 12th 36u - decreased 19th 34u 20th 32u 23rd 30u 26th 26u 30th 22u Dec 4th 18u - still waking up to hypos so guess I'll have to decrease again! |

Topic: General Discussion / What would you say about DAFNE :?: I second all of the above and would add that, because of the sensible, logical approach to the management of the condition, not only does it improves the lives of those who follow the principles but it also saves the NHS and the benefits system considerable sums of money over the years by reducing the incidence of complications and keeping people fit for work for longer. |

Topic: General Discussion / What would you say about DAFNE :?: It has renewed my interest in taking care of myself and in that respect has hopefully prevented further problems. I went from being a diabetic of 30 years, coasting along, had complications so half thinking what's the point and not bothering to test to a diabetic who WANTS to know what her blood suger is, who WANTS to watch what she is eating and who WANTS to be healthy. DAFNE benefits everyone in some way but I think for long standing diabetics like me it gives you a good kick up the backside. |

Topic: General Discussion / carb free day 2 days carb free, that's madness........you would almost certainly be producing some ketones after that long.....I dont even think pumpers would go that long when basal testing.... |

Topic: General Discussion / carb free day I tried it for 2 days but felt so rubbish that I gave up. I think that after 43 years of carb eating my poor body was in shock. However I learned enough from it to change my dose and now my BG is much better. |

Topic: General Discussion / BG readings I would agree with what novorapidboi has said and not to beat yourself up about testing between meals.I think testing at mealtimes becomes second nature, and therefore should not impact on your lifestyle or sense of freedom. Inbetween meals I would say is optional, if you feel like it, if you are ill/changed routine etc etc. Just my opinion. |

Topic: General Discussion / BG readings I do still test, occasionally, in between meals........more so between lunch and dinner, as I have the opportunity to do so at work, which is in an office currently........if I was to be in another job these testing opportunities may not be available.......I had a good three months of blood sugars in the middle of last year, however my in between meal readings were quite high, mid teens high.......I expected a much lower HbA1c result but I never got it......this must of been down to my in between meal highs.....so although they may not stay high for long, I would say they do still effect you long term blood sugar reading, which has been connected to complications.... But overall, yeah, there is nothing you can actually do there and then with a mid meal test, maybe apart from adjusting your dose timing the next time you have a similar meal in order to match more closely that activity of your digestion to the activity of the insulin....... My advice to you would be to not test if you feel its effecting your freedom and lifestyle, but dont totally dismiss the odd mid meal test.... |

Topic: General Discussion / carb free day Beccy,I was slightly confused by your statement - 'had never though of trying that to get BI right' How were you taught in your DAFNE course to adjust your BI dose......? In terms of carb free testing, it doesn't need to be all day as most people on MDI only have one or two dose of BI insulin, so you only need to test the day or day and night separately.... you can go carb free on Monday morning, then carb free Tuesday lunchtime, then Wednesday dinner......you can get a good picture of what is happening then... |

Topic: General Discussion / carb free day Had never thought of trying that to get BI right - interesting ideaAlthough I'm not sure I could go a whole day without any carbs - not from a diabetes point of view, just the will power and finding things to eat! |
