Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Poppadoms - really? Some chefs put a shine on their curry sauces by adding sugar. It is well worth asking to speak to the chef in your favourite curry house and outline your needs to him. From my experience, visiting a new place can have some astounding post-meal BG results and I have seen 20.6 in the past ![]() Regards Garry |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Information on menstrual cycle Hi ladies,As promised around 18 months ago, the DAFNE Educator Group is beginning to work on the new curriculum and workbook early in 2013, for release by the end of the year. Whilst the effects of the menstrual cycle / menopause appear to be quite variable from individual to individual, we'd like to try to collate experiences and solutions so we can develop some basic 'generalisable' advice for DAFNE participants and Educators alike. What would be most useful is to have some feedback on: Rather than posting onto here where threads may get complex and lost, please either send me a message, or email me directly: [email protected] Thank you all for your help ![]() Carolin |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / DAFNE view of Post-meal BG Testing Interesting that a company who manufacture a BG meter and sell strips to the NHS should contradict DAFNE advice and promote such frequent BG testing........![]() Oh dear, a cynical DSN? Surely not!! |

Topic: General Discussion / Diary Entries - correction help please You shouldnt go hypo if you correct with right amount, even overnight, providing your long acting is right. Cant see why you would go from 13.7 to 2.9 in an hour and a half with only 2 units correction.? |

Topic: General Discussion / Sick day Hi, no need to apologise ! I agree with everything you say, but my hands are tied about the handbook. Like you and probably most graduates, the first I knew about the effects of sickness was from the DAFNE Course. If I could not get on the course then how would I have found out. It is frustrating but there are no easy answers. The e-petition raised by the DAFNE User Action Group is an attempt to change this by pushing for Structured Education for ALL Diabetics. This will be a news item as well as being in the forums soon, so people can sign up to it. |

Topic: General Discussion / Sick day Marke,Really sorry I did not realise this. ![]() However it strikes me as so unfair that so many diabetics are missing out on information as vital as this just because they may not be in a position to do the DAFNE training. Most of us know the struggle getting on a course can be... Although there are some things on DAFNE you need to know to follow the rest I believe GPs should know or pass on some of this stuff, and have the sick day rules chart available to explain, it doesn't take long and it could save lives especially when you are ill. It saddens me that this is not already in place... So apologies Marke and good luck Dean123 ! |

Topic: General Discussion / Sick day Hi sorry but you cannot access the page unless you are a DAFNE Graduate, this is the rule by which we are allowed to have the handbook on the site. Its mainly because things like the sick day rules presume you are familiar with the rest of the course and so if you applied them without understanding the rest you may make things worse instead of better. The summary of them, is indeed your body needs insulin even if you don't eat especially when you are ill. Your liver will most likely release sugar to help you fight the infection, this will raise your Blood Sugar even if you don't eat. When your Blood Sugar exceeds certain levels you are likely to produce Ketones that if they are not treated can make you very ill. If you have not done DAFNE try to find out if your area offers any Diabetes Training or even ask your Diabetes team for advice. They should be able to help you with advice about what you shoudl do when you are ill. |

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android- CP Lists don't match?! Dear all,Am puzzled. I have an HTC Desire S and have no problem syncing my BG levels onto the online version. I find the online format messy and barely legible in the notes column ![]() What I would like to do is add my own CP calculations to my local CP list, there seems to be no way I can do this. ![]() Added to which all the really handy foods that have been added by users (including myself) online, are not transferred to the CP list that comes with the app, the transfer does not seem to work both ways and it seems there is no facility to update the CP list. So to summarize I am asking : ![]() ![]() Can you help? Thanks! ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Diary Entries - correction help please On Saturday I went out for an Indian and ate the meal about 08:10pm ish then It was 01:10am - 17.2 before bed. I didn't correct for a fear of going hypo.On Sunday morning it was 07:56am - 13.7. I did a correction of 2u and no food (which is why I wanted to know how to enter a correction dose with no food) then 09:24am - 2.9 - had 5 jelly babies then 10:39am - 6.4 - bfast |

Topic: General Discussion / Diary Entries - correction help please When I say before bed, I mean after any food and insulin has expired...............I would correct without fear of hypo........some may not be comfortable however but something should be done about a 16.5 before bed..... |

Topic: General Discussion / Diary Entries - correction help please leave it and see what you are in trhe morning.its maybe something you had eaten previously which your stomach is still digesting and your insulin hasnt sorted out yet. for example if i have a baked potato a couple of hours before i go to bed my BG at bedtime is higher than normal but it tends to correct itself by morning. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tesco sandwich labelling Lol, good guess, that's exactly what I would have guessed.......Overtime you wont need to guess for things like that though, and that's a good thing in my opinion. Eventually you build up your own little database for things you eat regularly..... Still annoying though when these shops cant put the basic information on their products that the people needing them can use...... I am an ASDA man....... ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tesco sandwich labelling Well the bread wasn't that thick and from having sandwiches from them before I guessed at 4CPs and I was 7.2 at dinner so I was happy with that.Aaargh! Annoying, shouldn't have to guess. Boycott Tesco! |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tesco sandwich labelling Oh i see.........I understand........I wonder if they have omitted the weight because its likely to be purchased by folk looking to lose weight....and they may not want to see it...... The DAFNE educated individual knows this is nonsense however..... So how many carbs did you guess and did the insulin dose work out OK.......? |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tesco sandwich labelling Oh yes it wasnt that i couldnt work it out, it was just so annoying that with all the facts and figures on the packet it didnt have the weight! It was red salmon and cucumber and for 100g it gave carbs as 26g.Just very frustrating when other Tesco sandwiches not in Light range have weight on pack AND give you carbs PEr PACK. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tesco sandwich labelling An average slice of bread is 15-20g of carbs, so 2 units.....This is the way I work it out when eating bread and it always works... What was in the sandwich.......? Smaller slices are 10g and rolls are usually 30g... |

Topic: General Discussion / Sick day Arianne explains it well.............The sick day rules are simply procedures to follow in order to manage one thing, ketones..........they wont make you feel better, but they will keep the ketones under control, especially when you are unable to eat as a result of the illness.... It seems you have not completed the DAFNE course so you will not know the rules and cant view them on here until you do complete the course..... |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Poppadoms - really? I just had a curry last weekend, my first ever since I did the DAFNE and looks like l got my CP count not just outside the ball park, but in the next town!I had 1 poppa, what I thought was half a plate of rice, chicken breast with minced lamb inside and a half plate of sauce. Thinking it was more like 10CP than the 6CPs I allowed for! |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / White Bread or Brown? Marmite and Bovril are the Devil's work..!Granary bread however, till the cows come home. My favourite is Seed Sensation by Hovis but will buy others if that is sold out. White bread I am sorry but holds about as much delight as chewing cardboard which funnily enough, eating white bread closely resembles. ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Tesco sandwich labelling I thought that recently food labelling was all going to be improved, I don't know if that has happened yet or not.I bought a Tesco Lighter Choice sandwich. It gave the carbohydrate value for 100g but NOWHERE on the packet (I checked several times) did it give the total weight, so I had to guess, which I can do yes, but that is not the point. This is terrible! The irony is that on a "normal" sandwich it does give the weight. It's no good giving the total suger value like it does because that is not the same. |

Topic: General Discussion / Sick day Hi Dean,Did you complete the DAFNE course? Have a look at the DAFNE Course Handbook on this website,(should be top right fourth down on this screen) It will be in there. Its under the 'Coping when you are ill' title. Here is the direct link : http://www.dafneonline.co.uk/hbook_topics/188 It basically refers to how your insulin regime should differ if you are ill and are producing ketones as a result of high blood sugar levels because you have an infection or are unwell. I won't explain it because it is too complex but it is explained in a very clear flow chart illustration in the handbook (link above). It confused me too at first, as I thought it would be something to do with legal issues about taking time off et c ! The term 'rules' is somewhat ambiguous but it becomes clear once you read and understand the guidelines because they are essentially 'rules on how to treat yourself when ill'. Hope this helps! ![]() |
