Topic: General Discussion / carb free day

I know - it definitely wasn't one of my better decisions. Not sure what I was thinking. Confused

2 days carb free, that's madness........you would almost certainly be producing some ketones after that long.....

I dont even think pumpers would go that long when basal testing....

Topic: General Discussion / carb free day

I tried it for 2 days but felt so rubbish that I gave up. I think that after 43 years of carb eating my poor body was in shock. However I learned enough from it to change my dose and now my BG is much better. Smile

I would agree with what novorapidboi has said and not to beat yourself up about testing between meals.
I think testing at mealtimes becomes second nature, and therefore should not impact on your lifestyle or sense of freedom. Inbetween meals I would say is optional, if you feel like it, if you are ill/changed routine etc etc. Just my opinion.

Topic: General Discussion / BG readings

I do still test, occasionally, in between meals........more so between lunch and dinner, as I have the opportunity to do so at work, which is in an office currently........if I was to be in another job these testing opportunities may not be available.......

I had a good three months of blood sugars in the middle of last year, however my in between meal readings were quite high, mid teens high.......I expected a much lower HbA1c result but I never got it......this must of been down to my in between meal highs.....so although they may not stay high for long, I would say they do still effect you long term blood sugar reading, which has been connected to complications....

But overall, yeah, there is nothing you can actually do there and then with a mid meal test, maybe apart from adjusting your dose timing the next time you have a similar meal in order to match more closely that activity of your digestion to the activity of the insulin.......

My advice to you would be to not test if you feel its effecting your freedom and lifestyle, but dont totally dismiss the odd mid meal test.... Wink

Beccy,

I was slightly confused by your statement - 'had never though of trying that to get BI right'

How were you taught in your DAFNE course to adjust your BI dose......?

In terms of carb free testing, it doesn't need to be all day as most people on MDI only have one or two dose of BI insulin, so you only need to test the day or day and night separately....

you can go carb free on Monday morning, then carb free Tuesday lunchtime, then Wednesday dinner......you can get a good picture of what is happening then...

Had never thought of trying that to get BI right - interesting idea Idea . Did you get your dose right in the end Ruth?

Although I'm not sure I could go a whole day without any carbs - not from a diabetes point of view, just the will power and finding things to eat! Smile

Topic: General Discussion / BG readings

having recently completed a DAFNE course in october and attended a follow up meeting last week with advice from DAFNE SPECIALIST NURSES i have come to the following coinclusions

i now only concern myself with my BG readings at breakfast, lunch, evening meal, and at bedtime.even if i do test inbetween these times and they are high i onlt take notice of them at the 4 times listed above.
i have been told that if they are high inbetween these times that they have no effect on my long term health/complications.with being off work for 4 months i have had plenty of time to do numerous tests and i have learnt and am still learning how my body reracts to insulin doses.
however i do believe that as i now go bacjk into the working enviroment i believe it is unrealistic and also not the DAFNE principle to test more frequently unless i am doing something different i.e exercise, alcohol, sickness etc....
so i say to myself why worry.one of the main DAFNE principles is MORE FREEDOM and thats what i am trying to work towards.me controlling my diabetes not the other way round.

if you have any thoughts on the above iwould love to hear from you as i find your thoughts, comments, and suggestions very helpful

cheers

paulj Very Happy

Topic: Site Development / Auto calculate QA from BG - let's get it right

This is a great function but be great if it got inline with DAFNE and the corrective doses. It caught me out a few weeks ago when I followed the app and it suggested a corrective dose for a snack and then 90 mins later a corrective dose on top of my dinner. If I remember rightly should be no correction.

To all users of dafneonline!

  • Given the chance, what would you like to be able to say about DAFNE to your diabetes team or local health service commissioners (the people responsible for deciding how NHS money should be spent)? (especially if it's not available in your area)

  • How could you grab their attention and give them the 'patient' perspective of what DAFNE means?

  • We'd love some quotes if possible (will be anonymised) to include in an exhibition area of the Diabetes UK Annual Professional Conference in Manchester in March 2013 and really hope you'll be able to help.........

Ideas will be gratefully received until 17th December.

    Thanks in anticipation

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Poppadoms - really?

Some chefs put a shine on their curry sauces by adding sugar.
It is well worth asking to speak to the chef in your favourite curry house and outline your needs to him.
From my experience, visiting a new place can have some astounding post-meal BG results and I have seen 20.6 in the past Embarassed

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Information on menstrual cycle

    Hi ladies,

As promised around 18 months ago, the DAFNE Educator Group is beginning to work on the new curriculum and workbook early in 2013, for release by the end of the year.

Whilst the effects of the menstrual cycle / menopause appear to be quite variable from individual to individual, we'd like to try to collate experiences and solutions so we can develop some basic 'generalisable' advice for DAFNE participants and Educators alike.

What would be most useful is to have some feedback on:
  • Usual effects/patterns of BG at different stages of cycle (e.g. around time of ovulation; pre-menstrual; at onset of period; etc)
  • Adjustments to QA (ratios; corrections) and/or BI that you find work best
  • Additional info re effects of menopause

  • Rather than posting onto here where threads may get complex and lost, please either send me a message, or email me directly:
    [email protected]

Thank you all for your help Smile

Topic: Questions for HCPs / DAFNE view of Post-meal BG Testing

Interesting that a company who manufacture a BG meter and sell strips to the NHS should contradict DAFNE advice and promote such frequent BG testing........ Rolling Eyes
Oh dear, a cynical DSN? Surely not!!

You shouldnt go hypo if you correct with right amount, even overnight, providing your long acting is right. Cant see why you would go from 13.7 to 2.9 in an hour and a half with only 2 units correction.?

Topic: General Discussion / Sick day

Hi, no need to apologise ! I agree with everything you say, but my hands are tied about the handbook. Like you and probably most graduates, the first I knew about the effects of sickness was from the DAFNE Course. If I could not get on the course then how would I have found out. It is frustrating but there are no easy answers. The e-petition raised by the DAFNE User Action Group is an attempt to change this by pushing for Structured Education for ALL Diabetics.
This will be a news item as well as being in the forums soon, so people can sign up to it.

    Marke,
Really sorry I did not realise this. Embarassed was trying to help.
However it strikes me as so unfair that so many diabetics are missing out on information as vital as this just because they may not be in a position to do the DAFNE training. Most of us know the struggle getting on a course can be...
Although there are some things on DAFNE you need to know to follow the rest I believe GPs should know or pass on some of this stuff, and have the sick day rules chart available to explain, it doesn't take long and it could save lives especially when you are ill.
It saddens me that this is not already in place...

So apologies Marke and good luck Dean123 !

Topic: General Discussion / Sick day

Hi sorry but you cannot access the page unless you are a DAFNE Graduate, this is the rule by which we are allowed to have the handbook on the site.
Its mainly because things like the sick day rules presume you are familiar with the rest of the course and so if you applied them without understanding the rest you may make things worse instead of better.

The summary of them, is indeed your body needs insulin even if you don't eat especially when you are ill. Your liver will most likely release sugar to help you fight the infection, this will raise your Blood Sugar even if you don't eat. When your Blood Sugar exceeds certain levels you are likely to produce Ketones that if they are not treated can make you very ill. If you have not done DAFNE try to find out if your area offers any Diabetes Training or even ask your Diabetes team for advice. They should be able to help you with advice about what you shoudl do when you are ill.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android- CP Lists don't match?!

    Dear all,
    Am puzzled.
I have an HTC Desire S and have no problem syncing my BG levels onto the online version.
I find the online format messy and barely legible in the notes column Shocked but its a great app so bygones...

What I would like to do is add my own CP calculations to my local CP list, there seems to be no way I can do this. Crying or Very sad
Added to which all the really handy foods that have been added by users (including myself) online, are not transferred to the CP list that comes with the app, the transfer does not seem to work both ways and it seems there is no facility to update the CP list.

So to summarize I am asking :
Idea How do I get the CP list online and my Local CP list to match?
Idea How do I add my own foods and CP calculations to the local CP list on my phone?

    Can you help?

    Thanks! Smile
