Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Greggs baguette sandwiches Greggs web site has a pdf nutritional guide but I couldn't identify your particular baguette. The sandwiches listed are typically 4 to 5 CPs. http://www.greggs.co.uk/assets/Uploads/NutritionalInfo-July2011.pdf |

Topic: General Discussion / B G Diary Comments please Hi,Couple of observations. On Wed and Thursday you tested BG very close together and ate about 3CPs this would be expected to add about 9 to your BG and this is what seemed to happen your BG went up. However the general drift up during the day may suggest insufficient back ground. The higher ratios your applying in the later readings may be compensating for this. Have a look at the online Dafne manual on background insulins. Maybe you need some professional advice on whether you can take lantus twice a day manual mentions this possibility, or even consider a different background insulin like levimir which you can take twice a day. I would also have a look at the hypo treatment in the manual as its very easy to over compensate when your low BG and then you may have to consider taking more insulin to bring BG back down. |

Topic: General Discussion / B G Diary Comments please Wow, there certainly is a lot of red in that diary, isn't there. That would indicate that the basal insulin is too low, but you keep having hypos overnight, so increasing basal doesn't seem to be an option.Do you have a diabetes educator that you can see? I would suggest having a chat to them about the possibility of taking your Lantus in the mornings instead of at night. Because Lantus doesn't always last a full 24 hours (and your BGs seem to be going pretty high before you take your next dose, switching to a mrning dose may stop the highs in the evenings and the hypos overnight. Cheers, Warwick. |

Hi, there is a link in the Carb Counter, Carb links on this site to a Greggs PDF of bagettes etc. It is from August2010 but still seems to work and I guess is still largely correct. |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabulemia is becoming a growing problem Great shame that young women feel the need to do this, however, it is a reflection in the perfection driven world which many younsters feel they have to conform with in order to be accepted and appreciated. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / New food labelling I hope they finally add carbohydrates. Such a pain that they don't usually.Oh yes! Please yes for the "per pack" or "per bar" or... even "per 4 sweets" for hypo options! ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Greggs baguette sandwiches When you're next in Greggs, ask them for their nutritional information leaflet. I did hope that they had a PDF version on their website but because foods vary in their shops (apparently), they only give out the leaflet they hand out in local shops.Sadly I cannot see your particular bagette on my local store's leaflet... they only show for me: Chicken Club (77g) Honey roast ham and mature cheddar cheese (69.5g) Mexican bandit (84.5g) Tuna crunch (7.6.5g) You may have been okay assuming something like 7CP based on these numbers... and making a note of it for next time in case it wasn't quite right and so you can tweek it. Can always trust the eat-out option to be a pain in the bum, eh? Hope you enjoyed your food! ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / B G Diary Comments please Hi,Just wanting some comments on my B G Diary. All comments are accepted. In the Wed 16/01 entry @ 08:01 hychk and the Thu 17/01 entry @ 09:11 hychk have I done the entry correctly? I had 2 shortcake biscuits which were 8.4g each and no insulin. Taking after meal levels into account do you think my meal time ratios are ok: bfast = 2:1 (2u for every 10g carbs) / lnch = 1.5:1 and dinnr = 1:1? Also which is the best way to enter this into my diary 2:1 or 2:10? On Fri 11/01 following a visit to my GP I increased my lantus/BI from 22u to 24u. Then as you can see on Fri 18/01 I increased it again by 2u so from 24u to 26u. Gill ![]() Carb counting (or trying my best to from what I learn on the forum) (as mentioned before on the forum, I can't get on a DAFNE course due to there not being one in my local area & can't travel/be away from home due to family commitments) Taking - Humalog - before meals/eating depending on how many carbs in the food. Lantus - before bed. |

Topic: General Discussion / Diabulemia is becoming a growing problem Original article from the diabetes.co.uk website:Diabulemia becoming a growing problem "An increasing number of women with diabetes are putting their health at risk by avoiding vital insulin treatment in order to lose weight." What is your opinion on this topic/article? My heart goes out to those that are desperate enough to take that route. ![]() As I've grown up, I have thought about this option for keeping my weight stable but (like the majority I hope) I chose to acknowledge the risks and avoid actively choosing to do it because I want to take care of myself and live as long as I can. Saying that, I have never ever been over weight (yet) and I've never ever been on a diet (nor do I ever plan to) so I've not ever really experienced the extremes that others sometimes face. If I ever worry about my weight, I tend to just become a bit more select about what I eat for a while to make sure it doesn't get out of hand. A lot goes unsaid for the positives of moderation too... Thoughts? ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin pump I went on to a pump last July, mainly because of problems with hypos and difficulties with exercise. Other than these issues, DAFNE had been working for me. In practical terms the pump wasn't a problem and the support from my hcps was really excellent. I mastered canulas and got to grips with calculating background basal rates and bolus amounts. I found temporary basal rates really useful for my lifestle, and extended and multi-wave boluses added a frison of excitemet! I confess I did find the minutiae of making changes to pump settings a bit tedious (with DAFNE you work it out and simply change the ratio/amount you inject, with the pump there are a range of options - which is why it's so flexible - which require some patience and perseverance, certainly in the early stages). For me the down-side was being reminded 24/7 that I have diabetes. I found wearing the pump in bed, taking it off for showers / baths, and noticing it everytime I dropped my trousers (I know - too much information) became very wearisome. It did largely address the hypo issue, but I damaged my knee and wasn't able to properly test any benefit re. exercise. Because DAFNE had worked pretty well for me I didn't see any benefit in reduced HbA1c - in fact my HbA1c was raised over the five and a bit months of pump useage. Eventually, after a lot of discussion with my hcps I decided to come off the pump and return to DAFNE. Again, this wasn't straightforward and it has taken just over a month to get back to roughly where I was before embarking on the pump. My hcps were incredibly supportive, and worked hard to overcome any sense of "failure" on my part. Any guilt is eased by knowing that my pump will be recycled and will give someone else the chance to benefit. So, I suppose I'm saying what my hcps said all along. Pump therapy isn't for everyone! I am glad that I gave it a real go, but am much happier now that I'm back with DAFNE. It wasn't the practical aspects of the pump as much as the emotional effects that tipped the balance for me. Clearly pump therapy provides lots of benefits for the vast majority of those that get the chance to use it, but bear in mind that for a small number of users it doesn't work out, and it isn't the end of the world. Good luck to anyone embarking on pumps. I'm still in touch with some of my DAFNE graduate colleagues from 2007, two of whom are now on pumps and they are really happy with the experience. Stew |
