Topic: General Discussion / Diabulemia is becoming a growing problem

I don't understand it personally, but I suppose there are girls out there very self conscious about there bodies.........

education i suppose is a good way forward......being told that hey WILL suffer, not maybe suffer if they continue would be real, maybe not ethical......

Topic: General Discussion / Diabulemia is becoming a growing problem

Original article from the diabetes.co.uk website:
Diabulemia becoming a growing problem

"An increasing number of women with diabetes are putting their health at risk by avoiding vital insulin treatment in order to lose weight."

What is your opinion on this topic/article?

My heart goes out to those that are desperate enough to take that route. Sad This is a great example of why an educational course like DAFNE is needed because we know as graduates that the way forward is exercise and dose reduction to compensate for the changes that occur from exercising in order to assist with weight loss - not starving your body of insulin, running the risk of hospitalising yourself just to lose a few pounds.

As I've grown up, I have thought about this option for keeping my weight stable but (like the majority I hope) I chose to acknowledge the risks and avoid actively choosing to do it because I want to take care of myself and live as long as I can.

Saying that, I have never ever been over weight (yet) and I've never ever been on a diet (nor do I ever plan to) so I've not ever really experienced the extremes that others sometimes face. If I ever worry about my weight, I tend to just become a bit more select about what I eat for a while to make sure it doesn't get out of hand.

A lot goes unsaid for the positives of moderation too...

Thoughts? Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin pump

I went on to a pump last July, mainly because of problems with hypos and difficulties with exercise. Other than these issues, DAFNE had been working for me. In practical terms the pump wasn't a problem and the support from my hcps was really excellent. I mastered canulas and got to grips with calculating background basal rates and bolus amounts. I found temporary basal rates really useful for my lifestle, and extended and multi-wave boluses added a frison of excitemet! I confess I did find the minutiae of making changes to pump settings a bit tedious (with DAFNE you work it out and simply change the ratio/amount you inject, with the pump there are a range of options - which is why it's so flexible - which require some patience and perseverance, certainly in the early stages).

For me the down-side was being reminded 24/7 that I have diabetes. I found wearing the pump in bed, taking it off for showers / baths, and noticing it everytime I dropped my trousers (I know - too much information) became very wearisome. It did largely address the hypo issue, but I damaged my knee and wasn't able to properly test any benefit re. exercise. Because DAFNE had worked pretty well for me I didn't see any benefit in reduced HbA1c - in fact my HbA1c was raised over the five and a bit months of pump useage.

Eventually, after a lot of discussion with my hcps I decided to come off the pump and return to DAFNE. Again, this wasn't straightforward and it has taken just over a month to get back to roughly where I was before embarking on the pump. My hcps were incredibly supportive, and worked hard to overcome any sense of "failure" on my part. Any guilt is eased by knowing that my pump will be recycled and will give someone else the chance to benefit.

So, I suppose I'm saying what my hcps said all along. Pump therapy isn't for everyone! I am glad that I gave it a real go, but am much happier now that I'm back with DAFNE. It wasn't the practical aspects of the pump as much as the emotional effects that tipped the balance for me. Clearly pump therapy provides lots of benefits for the vast majority of those that get the chance to use it, but bear in mind that for a small number of users it doesn't work out, and it isn't the end of the world.

Good luck to anyone embarking on pumps. I'm still in touch with some of my DAFNE graduate colleagues from 2007, two of whom are now on pumps and they are really happy with the experience.

That happened to me with the saline doesn't happen with novorapid. The weirdest thing I've had is when I have taken the canula out I have bleed, little like if u hit a vein with pens. Did take my breath away lol

canulas can cause more damage because you have something inserted in you all the time and can cause infections if you leave it in too long, which i made the mistake of doing once i had a nasty infection! also with the fatty bumps you need to be careful because your pump will sometimes not absorb the insulin and not warn you of an occlusion which has also happened to me many of times and ended up in hospital with dka, to be honest i was on injections for about 14 years and eventually didnt work for me so went on pupm which have been on for 4years now and im constanly having problems with canula sites im always changing sites but end up occluding, bending, blleding out etc its a no win situation!! sorry for the doom and gloom but could do with some advise Smile

Hey,
Well to be honest no but I think maybe have done injections for a long time I dont know if I have fatty lumps that cause them to bend? Just my theory really. The tough part is not know they bend until its too late really.

Topic: General Discussion / Where do I wear my pump?

have you tried:

I just googled insulin pump accessories and searched for UK.
www.pumpfashion.co.uk/
www.funkypumpers.com/aboutus.html
www.childrenwithdiabetesuk.org/diabetes.accessories

Sorry I can not put this in as a link.....computer skills not up to it!

I know there are people already making money in Australia. I have bought several waist somethings for when i go to bed with just a T shirt on. It is 35 degrees (Celsius) here today.

I also believe there is a site "100 places to wear your pump" some are a bit amazing but it is basically wherever you can!

Topic: General Discussion / Where do I wear my pump?

Does anybody know of a good website that actually has adult insulin pump accessories?
I have looked all over the internet, and can only seem to find either a bra/leg pouch in white. I just thought baby something funky would be fun, I dont want to hide my pump as it is part of me and mylife. At the moment I do slide my pump down my bra, or where it on my belt but I find that sticks out, and I end up knock it.
Any suggestions would be good!!
Maybe this would be a great money making idea??!!! Cool Razz

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin pump

Well I have been on the pump now for over 2 months, on a whole I think its the best thing since slice bread, however I am having trouble with set changes in as much as I have a 1-3 ratio for bent canulas. Yesterday I was sent home from work as sugars had reached 17.5. I was so worried and getting more and more stressed. I did use my insulin pens but nothing helped until I was able to get home and change the set.
I wouldnt go back to pens as I love the fact the little pump does everything for you (well its as good as the person entering the information)
Has anybody else found problems with set changes?!

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Android- CP Lists don't match?!

I was told back in August 2012 that an update was eventually coming... Nothing yet though. I've noticed other changes o the site that don't match up (even my ketones aren't being recorded correctly any more).

Is the android app going to get an update to accommodate the new changes?

Topic: General Discussion / exercise

Lows after exercise are caused by muscles taking sugar to replenish themselves (so I've read/been told). Its this replenshiment that helps them rebuild themselves slightly better each time you exercise.

If I'm going out on a proper ride (more than 20 miles) I will half my BI before and lower my meal before (usually breakfast) ratio to 05:1 from 1:1 for short rides (about 10 miles) to 1.5:1 for no ride. For long rides I will also lower the ratio for meal after (usually lunch) from 1.5:1 to 1:1 to stop after exercise lows.

I also find SIS energy bars are great as they are 40g carbs, but only 20 is sugar so they keep you up as well as bring you out of a hypo, pockects on the back of cycling tops are great for a handful of bars and my trusty Accu-chek mobile (no strips so can test while riding Very Happy

This is what I do, but never seem to get it completely right though, all trial and alot of error!

Hope some of the insulin/carb ideas help.

Phil

Gill, You can put another row in your cheat card. The 2:1 is really just doubling your 1:1. Helen
