Topic: General Discussion / Basal Testing - how often Usually, if your morning BGs are more than 1.5 different to your bedtime readings, and there is no obvious cause (exercise, stress, sickness, sneaky snack before bed), then you may want to look at modifying your BI.Also, if you are having overnight hypos, then you may want to do some 3 am tests to find out what is going on there. Thanks, Warwick. |

Topic: General Discussion / Changing Ratio after Hypo I would leave the ratios unchanged unless there is a trend so do not change for a one-off, and adjust as required (but this maybe what you have done indirectly by a different method i.e. change ratio). But after being low, I would not adjust as the treatment (how many CPs?) has taken BS back to a target level. Changing your ratio might lead to a high/low at next check. So in this case I would take CPs X 1.5 with no adjustment. You could then adjust again at next test/meal if required.Today I was low (3.6) at breakfast, so had extra CPs then my normal ratios and CPs with no adjustment and was a bit high (8.9) at meal as my breakfast extra CPs may have been a bit more than estimated. Hope this helps. |

Topic: General Discussion / Changing Ratio after Hypo My lunchtime ratio is 1.5:10 (1 and a half units to every 10g cho). When I tested ready to have my lunch today I was hypo - 3.1 - so treated, waited to do 15 minute test at which point BS was then 6.7. I then had my lunch but instead of doing my usual QA 1.5:10 ratio did 1:10. Am I correct in doing this? Gill ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Cp values of Doritos (blue packet) It is strange, I would of just kept going till dinner just to make sure the carb count was right.......the other possibility is your BI might be out......of course acting upon a few days results is the best way to do it as it may just be a one off.......when did you last test your BI? |

Topic: General Discussion / Cp values of Doritos (blue packet) Left it to 3pm and BG was still rising to 15.9. I decided to correct with 8 units of QA. Just before my dinner there at 1845 my BG had only dropped to 14.6. I have taken my usual 1:1 ratio with +4 correction. Really strange that the 3pm correction had no effect whatsoever. |

Topic: General Discussion / Cp values of Doritos (blue packet) You should not correct, as the dose is extremely likely to be correct, its just the timing of it that was out......I am pumping now too, only for a week though, but the same rules still apply, you still need to think about giving your bolus dose before you eat, for me personally, 15 minutes minimum. Novorapid is marketed to take around 10-15 minutes to get going anyway, so for slower digested meals taking earlier than this will keep the spike down...... Again, its all trial and error, everyone is different, so just get a good few mid meal tests under your belt with varying pre meal injection times and see what happens.....i tend to stay in single figures is I take the insulin 30 minutes before I eat, not always possible though...... |

Topic: General Discussion / Cp values of Doritos (blue packet) Thanks for the reply. I usually inject as I eat because I am on the novopen flexpen but being moved to the pump on Monday 4th Feb 2013. I have been watching my BG levels very rigorously the past couple of weeks in preparation for the switch to the pump.Should I hold off then and see if the blood sugar does come back down in an hour or so or should I correct immediately. I suppose it might be good to watch and weight and learn from this. |

Topic: General Discussion / Cp values of Doritos (blue packet) Welcome to the Forum.....![]() An average packet of Doritos (30g) is about 2 CPs, usually 17-18g CHO........so your count it correct...... High mid meal spikes means that the insulin action has not married up quite right with the digestion action..in this case your food has digested quicker than the insulin has processed it.... You next meal reading was probably on target if not near enough, was it? You should consider injecting earlier.... When do you normally inject for your meals.......? If you have experienced similar readings when Doritos have been on the menu its likely the Doritos may be slowing down the digestion of the meal, in comparison to your normal speed.... Have you done any other recent mid meal tests with other meals.....? |

Topic: General Discussion / Snacks I personally would try to count the 10g snacks if its possible in the previous meal.......if its closer to the next meal then you shouldn't bother......The BI insulin only really mops up the slower processed items, like vegetables, pulses and the like.....a biscuit will actually get processed much quicker than the BI can deal with it, so the QA is better equipped..... So with that information I wouldn't say that a split BI dose actually matters when your considering uncovered snacks..... The best thing to do is just see what these snack do to your BG at the next meal, they might not do much, but then again they might....if they do make a significant difference you might want to inject for it, considering Insulin On Board of course..... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Cp values of Doritos (blue packet) Just eaten ap a packet of doritos with a CP value of 2. Also had a BLT sandwich with a CP of 3. BG was 4.8 so took 10-1 units as my ratio was 2:1. My blood sugar 2 hours later is 14.9. I think the cp value of the doritos might not be right. Same thing happend to me last week. Has anyone else experienced this with doritos? |

Topic: General Discussion / Snacks I know that with BI you can have a 1CP snack without worrying about QA. Does that still apply if you split BI (morning and bedtime)? I usually have biscuit with coffee mid morning. If i had 1CP between lunch and dinner, and between dinner and bed, should i account for it with the previous QA? |

Topic: General Discussion / travel to USA It maybe more drastic in comparison, but when I went to Japan (quite a large time difference), I did end up flipping my doses over because due to the flight, I pretty much had two mornings in a row.If there was a smaller difference in the times, I would work out my dose work times and try to plan it over the flight. When I visited Geneva, only a couple of hours ahead, I just took my doses a little later without too much disruption. I know neither of these are behind time places for a UK traveller like myself, but I think the ideas can still apply. Learn what time of day you're leaving, how long the flight is and what time it will be at your destination when you land. Levemir can work for up to 18 hours so you should be covered. When deciding what meal ratio to use during flight, try to keep in mind what your body may be expecting at home... Have a great time!! ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Eating out / Takeaways if i go out for a meal or order a takeaway i wait (rightly or wrongly) until i have finished the meal before injecting my insulin dose. i do this for 2 reasons.the first is incase i dont eat it all and the second is , especially with meals that contain food like potato, pasta, rice etc... because it takes longer to digest if i take my insulin dose to early it makes my blood go low to quick resulting in HYPOS. i hope this is the correct thing to do .would appreciate any of your thoughtscheers paulj ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Lantus Questions Consult with your team obviously.........1. Why are you thinking of changing time? Do you feel you need more or less in the AM part of the day..........? 2. If you were changing then all you could do is just do it and compensate with QA, remember it takes 3 days to take effect.... 3. Again, you would just need to do it........a 50:50 split would be good to start with, and you would again need to compensate with QA for a week or something as the doses settle in........ Lantus can be split, but your better on Levemir for this, I think personally your better on Levemir in general as it allows for much more flexibility, especially for exercise and alcohol.... Is this is a possibility Gill............I would strongly recommend it...... Teanosugar........ Splitting the dose into 2 doses allows for 2 parts of the day to be dosed up independently, which is more realistic, as you your body requires different amounts of BI throughout the whole day, in fact, its possible the body needs different doses every hour of the day, something an insulin pump can accommodate for...........so splitting the dose in two is the next best thing for those on MDI, otherwise you will just be compensating with more QA insulin, which in the long run, is not good............you want as little insulin as possible in the system..... |

Topic: General Discussion / Checkers for skiing-low temperatures Hi J,Could you keep it in an inside pocket? I'm sure I read about someone with Type 1 trekking in the Arctic or Antarctic somewhere..... it might be worth ringing Diabetes UK Careline for advice (0845 120 2960) - though I feel a bit naughty suggesting that when you've posted on the DAFNE forum ![]() I hope you have a really great holiday P |

Topic: General Discussion / Lantus Questions I have been on Lantus for as long as I've been carb counting (approximately 4 months).1. Check with your DSN, but mine told me to change it an hour a day. I went from injecting at 10 pm to 7 pm in the event that I ever wanted to get an early night. 2. Again, check with your DSN, but one thing you could consider is injecting at 10 to see you through to the morning and then pick it up from there. To do this you would have to divide up the Lantus to hours in a day and work out how much you would need to give yourself which is going to be a massively reduced dose. I recently had a dilemma where I forgot if I'd done my night time injection and then went to bed thinking that I probably had done it. At that point my BM was 8.9. By 2 am it had crept up to 11. And then half an hour later it was 12.5 or there abouts. At that point I decided I had in fact forgot my night time injection and worked out that I would inject one unit for every remaining hour until my next injection at 7 pm. I talked to my DSN about this and she said that it was good going on my part because I could've started to feel quite unwell. 3. Is there any reason you want to split the dosage into 2? |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hypos leaving me 'wiped out'. Hi NuMo.If I can get glucose (4 jelly beans) fairly quickly the light disappears almost instantly it is when you are trying to look for the jellybeans and meter that I come unstuck. I do not get, nor, ever have had a bad headache. I am not sure it is the stress of a hypo but rather the actual low BG. The endo's problem was that I was siting these symptoms as hypo symptoms and she was having nothing to do with it, stating if I did not know what hypo symptoms were (shaking etc) then I should not be driving. The shakes etc come in for me well after the "silent" migraine symptoms so I know what I will respond to. The opthamologist expressed his frustration and said he (given the current circumstances) was quite happy for me to drive so he now signs my licence medical certificate. On the advice of my GP i changed endocrinologists. Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / travel to USA When I flew from London Airport to Sydney a few years ago, I gave the details of my flights to my diabetes nurse and she created a 'flight plan' for the flight out then another for the flight back - this worked out very well. It's worth asking. |
