Topic: General Discussion / Lantus Questions

I know it's always best to ask for advice from the DSN but just thought I would ask the questions on here while I wait for her phone call.

1. Time Changing
is this best done by just an hour each night/day(depending on when you take lantus)?

2. Nighttime to Morning/Morning to Nightime (I currently take my Lantus at 10pm ish)
with this being such a big jump how would you go about this? Would you forget your nighttime BI then just take it the next morning but obviously monitor blood sugars?

3. Splitting the dosage
how would you go about this?

I know it's my body at the end of the day but even though in the past I may have forgotten a BI injection here and there which I know resulted in a BS of about 30 ish the next morning it's still a scary thing to make a complete change.

Topic: General Discussion / B G Diary Comments please

Hi richard_g,

Thank you for your comment.

On Wed 16/01 at 07:44 then 08:01 and also Thu 17/01 at 08:51 then 09:11 the tests were close together because they were 15 minute hypo checks. I had 4 jelly babies for quick acting carbs at the earlier readings then 2 plain shortcake biscuits for slower acting carbs at the second readings.

Where can I find the Dafne manual?

Topic: General Discussion / B G Diary Comments please

Hi,

Just wanting some comments on my B G Diary. All comments are accepted.

In the Wed 16/01 entry @ 08:01 hychk and the Thu 17/01 entry @ 09:11 hychk have I done the entry correctly? I had 2 shortcake biscuits which were 8.4g each and no insulin.

Taking after meal levels into account do you think my meal time ratios are ok: bfast = 2:1 (2u for every 10g carbs) / lnch = 1.5:1 and dinnr = 1:1?
Also which is the best way to enter this into my diary 2:1 or 2:10?

On Fri 11/01 following a visit to my GP I increased my lantus/BI from 22u to 24u. Then as you can see on Fri 18/01 I increased it again by 2u so from 24u to 26u.

Carb counting (or trying my best to from what I learn on the forum) (as mentioned before on the forum, I can't get on a DAFNE course due to there not being one in my local area & can't travel/be away from home due to family commitments)

Taking - Humalog - before meals/eating depending on how many carbs in the food.
Lantus - before bed.

Topic: General Discussion / Ratio - Two Units QA to every 10g Carbs

Have I calculated this one right please?

CP 4 (40g cho)
QA 8

(2:10 or 2:1 - I suppose it depends how you prefer to write this down)

Topic: General Discussion / Eating out / Takeaways

If I was eating a meal out I think what usually works best for me if I was having a starter then main course is to inject after each course.

Is this is an ok thing to do?

If it is then maybe i should do this when having a takeaway at home too.

Sounds good to me. Possibly depends on how much gravy you have and what is in it. If it has flour, then you may want to account for that too.

Thank you for your reply. I only have a drop of gravy and it's the lazy version of gravy granuels Sad

Topic: General Discussion / Buffets

Here's how I went on at my buffet

1. eyeball what's what ie carby foods / non carby foods
--- I did this - easy

2. get my plateful of carby foods / non carby foods
--- did this - easy

3. inject according to the amount of carbs on my plate
--- at this point I start to panic even though I've got all the things worked out in my mind or on paper/pc due to seeing lots of different carby things on my plate ie cocktail sausage rolls 2/3 / piece of quiche size less than a 1/4 of the quiche / 2 triangular sandwiches / asda mini haddock & cheese fishcakes 2
--- injected probably 6u QA but no idea why as I'm now in my panic

4. I would now get a dessert (if wanted) and do a second injection for the amount of carbs in this
--- didn't have any dessert

the problem is what would you do if you wanted to pick at anything during the evening / afternoon ie cocktail sausage rolls / vol-au-vents etc?
--- didn't really pick at anything

Roast Dinner

I know we're all different but just wondered how much QA/bolus would you have for:
meat
roast potatoes 3/4 small
broccoli
cauuliflower
gravy

according to my carbs and cals book it's 25g cho for my usual portion size of potatoes so I would sometimes do 3u QA and sometimes 4u QA on a 1:10 ratio.

Topic: General Discussion / Chinese Takeaway

I very often only eat half a tray of chicken/prawn curry and half a tray of the rice then maybe in a bit /sometimes I want to eat a bit more ie maybe the other half.

Is it ok when on MDI and because of the high carb and fat content and also maybe if I'm eating in 2 instalments to split twice which would then mean 4 injections!

Topic: General Discussion / Ratio - have I calculated this right?

Maybe the ratio should've been 2:10 (or 2:1). But then I'd be frightened of going hypo. I had 2 pieces of toast with 1 poached egg for breakfast when my BG was 14.1.
