I also would not disclose my diabetes to a prospective employer - however once employed I would let maybe the OH&S manager, First Aid Officer, Direct Manager know in case of an emergency. That way you are not being judges against but you are not putting yourself at risk.

Hi all,

The latest update (1.3) is now out, with the long awaited carbohydrate portion list. You can search by name or category in for the food/drink you are looking for.

Try it out and let us know what you think.

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise

That's one odd thing explained to me.
I had the expectation that exercise would always decrease my BG.
I have always meant to ask why post-early morning exercises my BG normally goes up. On occasion when getting up with a morning BG say at 12 or 13....I have gone pedalling like merry **ll around the park only to come back and find my BG at 14 and wondered....how does that work!
Thank you Alan... perfectly logical ...another diabetic life mystery explained.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Red Wine

Red wine sends my BG levels up realy high,I have tested around 3am to ensure that I am not having a hypo.I do not count for any CPs when drinking it.
Does anyone else have any problems or can offer any advice.

Andy - as Novorapidboi says, you shouldn't normally have QA before exercise - but it depends. When I go for my early morning swim, my BG goes up by 3 or 4 mmol. My diabetic consultant told me that it is because of an 'adrenalin rush' when I go to the pool, which triggers the release of glucagon from the liver. What I do if my BG is over 7.5 is to give myself 1 unit of QA and this stops it going too high. This doesn't happen when I go on my exercise-bike at home: my BG goes down by about 4, so I make sure it's not less than 8 before I start. It may depend on where you take your exercise - if you go to a gym, then you may get the 'adrenalin rush' like I do when I go to the swimming baths.
But everyone is different, Andy - if your BG goes up by 6 mmol consistently you my need 1 or 2 units of QA before. Try 1 at first and take it from there. Remember: good decisions depend on information, so make sure you make the necessary entries in your diary.

OK update!
I saw the plastic surgeon today and have referrals to have both a sinogram and an ultrasound (probably on Monday or Tuesday next week). The sinogram involves putting dye into the "hole" and seeing how far it travels. The ultrasound tells the surgeon the nature of the surrounding tissue so that he can plan the surgery. Another appointment next Friday and then surgery probably before Christmas. Helen

Topic: General Discussion / Exercise

You need to test your blood before you excercise to make sure its nots high as it will climb further......

But if your saying it shot up to 6 then I would of said it was at an acceptable level.........

Did you have something to eat in the hour previous, this rise may be the glucose release from food that is not getting used up straight away from the activity.....

And no, I wouldnt have QA before excercise but everyone is different....

Topic: General Discussion / BI Changes

My understanding is that BI should keep your BG constant in the absence of any carbs i.e fasting. It is supposed to handle your bodies background requirements for insulin. Although your requirements may change this would happen over months not days. Once your BI is about right you should only need to vary your QA, I agree with others the effect of changing your BI can take days to become apparent so if you
keep changing it day after day you are not seeing the true effect of the change. I would try sticking to say 19 (half-way) for at least 3-4 days and then considering a change if you are high or low, its also worth missing a meal and seeing what your BG does this will give a better idea of if you BI is right.

Topic: Site Development / DAFNE Online iPhone application - help with content/design needed

Hi Thunderbolt,

I think an update to the site we rolled out recently may have restricted the connections from the app. We've got rid of this update, so try again and let me know if your connection problems persist.

Also - for the Fasting entry, use Other for now and we'll look to add Fasting as an option in the future.

Nice one Simon... Looking forward to having a dabble with the counter especially.

I'm having a few connection probe at the moment, only being able to save one result at a time. More than likely all the bumph on my iPod but just wondered. Also I've been doing a fasting test run today and wondered if the "other" category is the eight one to use. If not, any chance it could be added?!?

Great work as ever. Cheers fella!

Topic: General Discussion / BI Changes

I don't adjust my BI, as it takes several days for any adjustment to take effect (Lantus)

During the training, we were advised of this so I wouldn't recommend changing the BI unless there is a pattern of constant highs or lows first thing in the morning (based on the BI injection being taken in the evening).
At some point there has been discussions on this site about splitting the BI as some people have found that helps, and prior to DAFNE I split my BI as I was advised it might help my control.

Everyone reacts differently, and I no doubt expect there are times when my body needs less or more BI, but generally I think it is at the correct level at the moment.

Apologies if I've opened a can of worms.

I completely agree - I have never and will never disclose my diabetes to employers through the recruitment process. As to whether diabetes is a disability - I don't consider it to be - but the leglislation is designed in such a way that the decision is an individual one. From a purist legal view the condition does fit the criteria - but that's a different debate altogether!

As to whether or not medicals are required that very much depends on the organisation you work for - my organisation uses Occupational Health for health clearances for ALL posts. This will change in the new legislation. - As to what medics will disclose its what the individual will allow to be released and rightly so.

As to what can be disclosed in references that very much depends on your organisation - the absoloutely critical thing is that recruiting managers do not have health information throughout the decision making process irrespective of condition or health background

But... what can employers ask for from referees? I am often asked to provide references for people that I have previously managed, and it is standard practice to be asked about health and sickness records. Is this something I should be declining to answer?

Topic: General Discussion / BI Changes

The BI dose as I understand it deals with your livers release of glucose throughout the day, probably a bit more complicated than that as I expect it to tackle other forms of sugars from other sources too......

I will also assume that the livers release of glucose will and does change with the body as more or less hormones are released throughout our life.......therefor so does the BI requirement..

In the long term your BI dose will change and the short term but nothing to drastic I would imagine....

My daytime dose seems to be fine, and any unexpectant results can be compensated with the quick acting insulin, but overall your doses should stay the same.......

I babbled on a bit there.......

How often do you change your dose?

What insulin are you on, as the effects of a Lantus change only takes place a few days later.....?

Have you done overnight BI tests, if so what was the outcome?

Topic: General Discussion / BI Changes

Hi All,

A bit confused here so maybe somebody will know the answer.
Should my BI be fixed i.e. should I get to a final BI that is the one that I use and only alter due to circumstances like a big day of exercise, or does everyone jsut keep constantly changing their BI and that is how it is supposed to be?
I thought we would get a fixed one eventrually throught the step -wise approach but checked the handbook and it doesn't actually specifically say that. I constantly move my BI from 14 at its lowest daytime to 24 at its highest and form 0 to 6 at night. There is a range and a pattern to this but things are only right for a short time when up at 24 or down at 14 and the slow migration between is not so good as everything is off then.

Thanks,

Helen

Totally agree with Marke; I would never openly tell any interviewee about my diabetes, unless asked outright, and then wouldn't lie. Quite honestly it has nothing to do with the job recruitment process. Surely they are asking about your skills, expertise and knowledge to fulfil the role? I also don't acknowledge that diabetes is a disability; it is a condition which we all manage and aim to control.
In the past, 1980's, I have had to have a doctor's medical prior to starting employment, but this was before I was diagnosed with diabetes. Does this still happen? If so, what can a doctor disclose to your prospective employer?

sorry but I would like to meet the person who is completely honest in the recruitment process. OK so its a question of degrees of honesty but having been both the interviewee and interviewer many times, people say what they think you want to hear not necessarily what is completely 100% accurate. I would never declare my diabetes it is none of the prospective companies business, unless they explicitly ask and it turns out the cannot you have not been dishonest by not telling them.
Good luck with the job hunting, the most important thing is to stay positive and believe something will come along. I'm sure it will.

This aspect of the new legislation hasn't been widley publicised and I do have to be a bit of an anorak when it comes to leglistatiion :-)

you are correct- absence relating to a declared disability should not be held against people and in the majority of organisations this is adhered to. Re stats, it might be useful to know that where employers are showing the two tick symbol (two ticks in a circular type logo) candidates who declare a disability are guaranteed an interview if the meet the essential criteria on the person spec. The two tick symbol is most prevalent in large organisations - especially the public sector.

Forgot to say before - very best of luck with your job hunting!
