Topic: Questions for HCPs / Levemir issues

Hi J,

Thank you so much for all of this. I really appreciate your help and feedback.

It's interesting that the Levemir seems to be having similar effects on you. I did a bit more research on other websites yesterday (by Googling Lantus/Levemir comparison) and, although there were plenty of people for whom Levemir was working well, I also found several posts from people saying that they'd been experiencing the same problems - unpredictability, lack of patterns and extreme highs and lows - particularly very high levels on waking. I'm just wondering if it works for a lot of people but not for some and I happen to be one of the some.

We've been using it for about the same amount of time (I started the Levemir in July 2010) and I think that 5 months is long enough to try something with no success to be honest. I've been diabetic for 22 years, so same as you again, although I didn't develop it until I was 15.

To be honest I don't find that the time of the month has too much effect on my levels but I had enormous problems during my pregnancy. I'm not sure whether the insulin resistance that you develop is caused by hormonal changes, weight gain, a combination of both or something completely different. If I am lucky enough to get pregnant again I can't for the life of me imagine being able to cope with it with the experiences that I'm having on the Levemir at the moment.

I have been in email contact with my DAFNE team but I've just changed to a new team so I haven't known them that long. Although they're very good about replying to my questions, their opinion is that I should keep trying with the Levemir and, unless someone can give me a really good reason why this is the best option for me, I'm beginnning to think that maybe I shouldn't.

Is this the CGM your waiting for, that should give you some answers...

Its either that or take it in the morning, then during the night when your most sensitive to iinsulin, the background should be on its last legs...

Chase them up, the quicker you get things sorted the better...

Topic: General Discussion / Flu jab - just curious

i have it most years though i'm a bit disorganised and sometimes forget and it's never done me any harm. Flu jab definitely doesn't last for life. You're supposed to have one every year (in october / november) as it always targets whatever specific strain of flu is about that year and it changes constantly. All diabetics are supposed to have it. M x

Topic: General Discussion / Levemir versus Lantus

Thanks Paul.

Personally I've found that my BG readings on the Levemir have been really variable and much harder to predict than they were when I was on the Lantus. I've had real problems with very high early morning readings and far more extreme highs and lows.

I was just wondering whether anyone else had experienced anything similar?

I'm really tempted just to switch back to the Lantus again but I want to get my facts straight first.

Topic: General Discussion / Levemir versus Lantus

The main difference I have seen is that people on one injection of Lantus per day who have found that the Lantus does not last the full 24 hours have benefited from 2 injections of Levemir but I would welcome any other opinions.

Just to say thanks to everyone who helped. Amy's blood sugars are now fantastic, waking at between 4 and 5 mmol.

She's now on medication for stomach acid (she'd complained of a pain in her chest/stomach and a taste of blood in her mouth) and this seems to have stopped the high levels.

Thanks again.

stick at it carol..................

a split dose could help, it means you could chop the evening dose right down so you dont hypo overnight, but can then pile on the units in the morning to ensure your covered the rest of the day...

eg.......10 units am, 6 units pm....

Keep up the good work....

Further to Simon's message, some Year 11's at a High Wycombe school are in for an unpleasant discussion with their Head Teacher in the near future. So they won't be doing it again and a warning to anyone else who thinks its clever to post abusive/racist comments, we can and will find the cuplrits and ensure they are punished.

Topic: General Discussion / Flu jab - just curious

I had the Pneumonia jab this year as well and the surgery was suprised I had not had it. yes its supposed to last for life but sometimes apparently you need a 'top' up. Better to have it than not, like the flu jab I beleive it is not a 'live' vaccine. This means it cannot give you pneumonia just as the flu jab cannot give you flu. The only illness you can get from these jabs is a reaction to the suspension ( liquid) used to deliver them. This often contains an
egg derived product and thus the potential risk of a reaction.
Go get them people its not nice to have Diabetes and flu :-(

Topic: General Discussion / Flu jab - just curious

That certainly would be a reason for me to not be offered considering I know my lungs are healthy - but the "p jab" does seem to be reccommended to diabetics but whether thats specific to a Type, its hard to tell. I can see the thread while Im replying on my phone but the name for p jab that was suggested, that looks like the words used on the leaflet I was given. Shall confirm later today. Smile
