Topic: General Discussion / Exercise

I've often had trouble with my BGs and exercise. I'm trying to get back to regular training, but I am struggling, and the BG doesn't always change how you expect. Most of the time, the BG crashes after i've finished the session, but from time to time it goes up, and that could be just a result of a false high because the actual BG is low. I would recommend anybody doing any exercise should keep a bottle of lucozade, Glucose Tablets, Jelly Beans with them just in case.

Topic: General Discussion / What are you reading?

I've been a big fan of James Herbert (Horror), and have read all the books. I'm eagerly anticipating his next book in March next year. Another author I enjoy is James Patterson, and especially liked the Women's Murder Club series (1st to Die, 2nd... up to book 9) they are all titled with the number in the series.

I used to be a big fan of comics (Batman, Superman, etc) but haven't looked at them in some time now.

I don't travel into work for as long as I used to, so don't get a chance to get into a book now, and have opted more for the audio books, as I can listen to them on the IPOD whether i'm on a train or driving.

I love reading Lee Childs. He writes a series about a Character called Jack Reacher. They are really action packed and keep you on the edge of your seat from front to back. I'm also loving anything by Jodi Piccoult, she has a really different way of writing her novels, they are a bit lighter than I usually read but I do enjoy them

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / Needlessly Repeated BG Results...

I'm using a cheap and cheerful Samsung E2100B.

I've tried only once to upload my BG results to my diary via the DAFNE Online Mobile Site and for some reason when it was trying to send the first one through, it kept being "redirected" over and over. Eventually I gave up on it and assumed that I was going to be unable to send BG results successfully through my mobile.

Once I got back on a computer however, I found out that it had posted the one BG entry 15 times over the date it was set for.
I'm not sure if this is a problem with my phone or not. I'm quite impressed that I can post on the forums fine on it at least.

Would you like me to try posting some BG results again for experimentation?
Thanks in advance for your replies!

Just to add one more thing - I'm unable to access 'My DAFNE Centre' - there is a discussion running there that I'd like to be able to see - is there another way to it?

Topic: General Discussion / What are you reading?

We spend a good lot of our time reading BG results and looking for patterns, but to come off the subject of diabetes... what books or comics do you enjoy to read? Do you have any recommendations? I'd love to know! Smile

My favourite genres tend to be horror, thriller, touch of crime and fantasy. How about you? Smile

My reads!

Novels:

I'm currently reading Julian May's Sage of the Exiles. I am currently on Book 3: The Non Born King.
It has been quite a good fantasy read - though I feel it is very slow paced. I like what is happening in the story at least so I keep reading! This series was recommended to me by my Dad after I indicated interest in reading the Lensman novels. Smile

I finished reading Andrew Neiderman's PIN not too long ago. That was quite freaky and disturbing. I found the ending to be a bit of a anti-climax, only a little bit though, because it did make sense (for this book's nature anyway lol).

I also read read my first Dean Koontz book: Demon Seed! Picked it up dirt cheap in Lidl and my golly, I absolutely loved reading about that twisted artificial mind! XD I remember being scared of the films that were related to this book when I was younger but I think I'd like to go watch them now lol.

Graphic Novels / Comics / Manga / Manhwa:

Currently reading:

Naruto Volume 2: I'm trying hard to give this popular shonen manga a chance but I'm still not convinced because the characters are hard for me to relate to. I only have so much fondness for immature and overly cocky characters...

MAOH: Juvenile Remix Volume 2: I picked this one up out of curiousity and it's been an interesting read as the main character develops his new found special ability and what it means for his world. It's marked as a Shonen, but I believe this is for more mature readers so perhaps it is a Seinen manga...

Astro Boy (Volume 1 & 2 in one book, published by Dark Horse Manga): Wasn't too familiar with Astro Boy and when I saw this - had to pick it up to satisfy my curiosity! It is delightfully charming and innocent even though the subjects the stories touch on are rather scientific or medical - but that's typical of Osamu Tezuka I suppose!

I know I've a lot of comics and what not but please - don't be afraid to show your current or even favourite reads! Very Happy

To add - you also cannot adjust your person BG target ranges due to the form not being present when the page loads. Sad

Topic: General Discussion / think I am getting there

I understand... Before DAFNE, I used to have okay control I suppose, but it reached a point where what I did stopped working. My guess work understandings had changed and I felt so lost. I was pointed at DAFNE and it has helped me understand things again ten fold than I did before. Removing the guesswork has been such a god send - even if my results aren't always perfect.

It can be hard - trust me, I did the over correcting jazz due to my highs phobia for quite some time after doing my course - and eventually I found out that my BI wasn't even working 24 hours so that was causing highs in the afternoon! Argh!

On that note, I have changed my BI to Levemir recently and if I didn't have DAFNE, I don't know where I'd be. In the past week alone - I've learnt that even a common cold and stress can completely throw me out (see my posted results above - note the ketones!)

If you ever have any moments where you feel lost, be sure to keep referencing your DAFNE guidebook and (as you already are) be in contact with your team. Smile If they're on this site, it might be worth finding out their usernames and sharing your BG diary with them so they can see your results sooner than the week run with the monitor.

I know I didn't end up using that monitor but I do remember sending a set of results to my diabetes specialist so he could evaluate. This was pre-DAFNE! XD

D'oh you're right - the fact the during night BGs are at the front of the result diary confuses me! Sorry. My bad! XD

You've done well to put your BI down as a result though. As for the highs - they're a result of the boomeranging. Let's see how you get on with stopping the corrections at meals within 24 hours of any hypos. Smile

Good luck!

Ah! I've edited my response, but thanks for clarifying what the monitor was. Smile I was offered that once too - didn't end up taking it up though!

I'll paste my edited response here so you see it:

The reason I said about not ruling out the possibility of a over night hypo is - all your blood tests are being done when you've taken more QA insulin.
You have not done any during night tests to prove you have not hypo'd during the night.

If you do a check during the night when only your BI is working you'll get a better picture of what your BI does - if you hypo, you know for definite that it's too much and highs after a over night hypo do not necessarily show up when you wake up first thing.

Aim to resolve the hypoing problem first and see how you go with results. You're correcting way too often to be getting a good idea of patterns because of the hypos in response to the corrections.

In short, your BGs are "boomeranging" up and down. You need to stop this. I know it's a hard habit to break but it's worth it - seriously!

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Levemir issues

I can't actually input multiple BG results but I will see about putting them in one at a time after this post...

I believe that whatever the illness was (probably a cold), I think it has gone now because I've had two days now of no ketones! However, I keep getting to an hour or so before my lunchtime and I've been having some serious hypos. I initially put this down to the adrenaline from the bike training, but after speaking to my DAFNE nurse again, it seems to be quite apparent that because the illness has gone, my body is now returning to 'normal' and in turn, there's too much BI on board during the day. I''m having to treat the lunchtime-eque hypos more than once so I'll be putting my morning BI down by 2 units tomorrow morning and then see how I go!

Shall post my results up now so you can see what I mean. Blinkin' illness!

Topic: General Discussion / think I am getting there

Thank you JWo I have been writing everything down and everything that I eat as well so that I can show them when I go back to get the Continous Glucose Monitor fitted on the 3rd Dec. Dont think that it was a hypo in the night as when I went to bed I was 8.0 andat 6.30 was 8.2 7.30 8.9 then had breakfast. That was branflakes 30g milk and 1 slice of multigrain bread toasted 44g so worked it out as 4.5 CP and I am on 2:1 ratio so had 9 QA Have been tacking BGs 2 hours after and thats when it was 21.9 at 9.30 I was high all day. Sorry about the poast as I cannot do much on a computer and it takes me ages. But I will keep at it. I am botherd about droping my BI as low as it is because when I was on DAFNE and told to drop it thats when my BGs were high all the time and I was very ill with it I never had bad controle before never high like I have been having and I dont like it.

Yep - looking to add ketones + other health measures to the online diary first - need to make sure this supports the measures first then we can get them in the iPhone app.

I've modified the keyboard for dosage/bg entry to counter the problems you've all mentioned, this should be hitting the app store very soon!

As an update - we've managed to upgrade our software, after a bit of a struggle. There are a few teething problems so if you see any error messages, they will be sent to us and the problems will be fixed over the weekend.

Thanks all for your patience!
