Topic: General Discussion / The media getting it wrong "A virus that destroyed her pancreas"? Halarious! XD The pancreas does more than just produce insulin - I mean it's where the prompt comes from that triggers our glucose storage release - so GEE WHIZ I wonder how she's getting on without all it's functions!I am surprised they can get away with such misleading information but oh well, the media's not been known to be very reliable any way...! I look forward to the day when Type 1 and Type 2 are recognised properly - it's why I hate admitting to people that I have my type because I often get the "diet only" lecture in response. Ignorance. *shakes her head and sighs* |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Carb counting- Have just graduated re DAFNE - I think my problem is miscalculation of carbs- as I make and cook all my own food- including bread- I don't buy ready made stuff- I cannot find much of what I eat in the carb counting book! Had lunch yesterday- 4and half CP- BG 3.8 so rounded down to 4. Had 1 apple before walk- BG at 6pm was 23!!! In my lunch was a whole mozarella cheese- not in book so ignored! Big mistake? Rounded up CP after correcting dose of 3QA- BG at bed 10.7. All ok now! Does ANY book have counts for ALL fruits etc.? I can't be the only one that hates Enumbers etc. Have old phone- cannot afford new phone just to get APPS-all my foods might not be on there anyway. Any suggestions folks- will kepp on " guestimating" for now! |

Topic: General Discussion / BG Diary Hi Steve,A couple of questions - what is the error message which is displayed, and which web browser are you using? If you are seeing an error related to the DTD, it means the browser can't understand the XML (some versions of Internet Explorer are guilty of this). You can get around this by directly saving the link (right click on it and select 'Save Target As') and then opening it up in Excel. Regarding using Excel, are you doing things which might be useful to other users, and if so is it something we could add in to the online diary? Thanks, Simon |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE As it has been said, it takes time to get used to. You will need to get the Background Insulin at the right level, then work out what ratio is needed to calculate the level of Insulin agains the carbohydrates consumed.I took the course two years ago, and my control has improved and I detect a lot more Hypos before they are a problem. The only down side is that I have more problems with eating out or eating foods that cannot advise the carbohydrate contents. As for work not letting you take the time off paid, that is unfortunate. As for me I was out of work at the time so that wasn't a problem for me, though I would have preferred to be in work and use a holiday allowance to attend. Enjoy it, and try to give it a go. It helped me a lot, and hopefully you will have success with it too. Paul |

Topic: General Discussion / The media getting it wrong What do you think of these reports? Here is an extract from ITV News: "Every morning Rebecca Farrar's mother tests her blood sugar because Rebecca suffers from an aggressive type of Diabetes." "Rebecca had a virus that destroyed her pancreas, which normally produces insulin, so her blood sugar can drop very quickly and she can't tell when it is happening." Here is an extract from The Telegraph: "Rebecca Farrar suffers from an aggressive type of Diabetes. She had a virus that destroyed her pancreas, so her blood sugar levels can drop very quickly and she can't tell when it's happening." A quick Google search shows that most reports are along these lines, so I guess there was just one report and the rest have been copied. I think it is great that Rebecca has a dog that can detect hypos, in fact, can I have one please? ;o) My issue is with the media getting it wrong yet again. Aggressive type of Diabetes? I guess they mean Type 1 with no early hypo warning symptoms. I must have an aggressive type of Diabetes occasionally after I've had a few hypos and have loss of symptoms, I'm glad it clears up though. Saying the blood sugar drops because the pancreas has been destroyed is just ignorant and lazy reporting. I'm just thankful that she's not overweight as I'm sure they'd have blamed it on that. |

Topic: General Discussion / What are you reading? That is a very good observation Brum_Taffy! The only publications I know of are the sorts of books I got from Diabetes UK (does any one remember that Diabetes Duck character? Often dressed somewhat super hero-ish)...However, upon doing a search online for "stories with fictional diabetic"... this site had some ideas on offer: http://diabetickidsbooks.com/Teenbooks/ Don't know much about the Fiction books suggested on this page either: Fiction: Needles by Andie Dominick Between A Rock And A Hard Place by Alden R Carter My Aunt Ruth by Iris Rosofsky Next To Strangers by Sheri C Sinykin The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois Bujold (this is not about diabetes, but approaches the idea of dealing with a medical condition) Perhaps we should all hunt them down and give them a read? |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE I definitely agree with vic demain about going to it with an open mind. It is very common for people to expect perfect results straight off (I know I did to an extent so it was very frustrating at times!) but you have to remember that you'll be learning what your body needs for all sorts of situations and as an eventual result - much better control overall! The hard work is worth it in the end - I can't imagine living without DAFNE now! All the guesswork I used to do - it's so not worth going back to that! |

Topic: General Discussion / TYPE 1 PREGNANCY This is such an important area. Good luck to you in making your choice, Vicky. Above all, planning and taking time preparing are the keys to lowering risks to both you and your baby. Until you are sure and prepared, make sure your contraception is sound. Some information leaflets, which apply to types 1 and 2 diabetes, as well diabetes in pregnancy (gestational diabetes) can be found at http://www.pi.nhs.uk/diabetes/projects/leaflets/leaflets.htm A few of these are more type 1 specific. Which drugs can be used is very important- ramipril and statins in particular, need to be stopped; high-dose folic acid is recommended- 5mg, not the lower 400mcg. Of course no amount of leaflets/on-line material will substitute for a personal discussion with your medical team. Has this forum had any babies yet? |

Topic: General Discussion / What are you reading? Great topic! I have moved on from the Millennium series (re-read, audio books, films, what a nerd, eh?), to discover The Discworld... boy, I am engrossed!Just thinking, I don't recall reading any novels that feature a character living with a 'long-term condition', like diabetes. Unless you count Nobby Nobbs, from the Guards series, who seems to have every infectious disease known on the disc! Any works of fiction out there featuring people with diabetes or any other LTC? |

Topic: General Discussion / DAFNE Hi Neil, go with an open mind, be prepared to learn more about the condition than you ever have before. Take it on board and try it, you will have good days and also frustrating days. I am over a year on from the course, my control is better but that is because I check more regularly and work harder at it. Would I have been able to do this without DAFNE? Possibly but my knowledge would never have been as good. Don't expect miracles because they wont happen. I now have more hypos than ever, that is a worry, but I avoid that awful running high and all the associated problems that go with it. Enjoy the course.Vic. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / BG rise at end of Lantus Hi, I think it is a case of Lantus running out, but like others I'm not a HCP so its just personal opinion. Given the scenario you originally described your QA should have stopped working ( 6 hours after lunch, it generally should only last 4-5 hours) and you then need your BI to keep your levels steady. If it has also reduced in effectiveness ( it should 'tail' off gradually between 12 and 24 hours according to its profile) your BG will start to rise. The only sure way is to take your BI and not eat anything all day, if your BI is right then your BG should stay at similiar levels. This is not an easy thing to do I know but that is the theory anyway. Although slighting your BI dose does mean you have two lots of BI acting at the same time, they should again in theory be reducing and increasing in tandem and so not be acting totally at the same time.I think most of us do find a split dose better, but as ever we are all different. If your control is quite good now it may be you can see more effect if you split your dose. It may be worth a try however it doesn't sound like your consultant would support it, so you really need a DAFNE educator to support you otherwsise its going to be hard to do on yuor own. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Blood Glucose range whilst pregnant Hi, Thanks for your reply. You dont happen to know what the bg should be before bed do you? As you can see from my readings they are a little up and down... not sure if the ups are an effect from the lows, however I have adjusted accordingly. I have seen the diabetic doctor at the hospital when I first became aware I was pregnant and he adjusted both QA and BI insulins. After numerous hypos I have decreased ratios and BIs where possible. I spoke to him again last Monday but was not happy to increase evening ratios. My BG was raising late evening with no QA in my system only BI, however still found I was experiencing night time hypos.. Strange.. but no one can explain this, not even him. I am trying desparately to keep my levels under 10 and eat a balanced diet. Im due to have a dafne course review next week... perhaps they will have some answers :-/ Thanks caroline |
