Topic: General Discussion / BI back down? Only do so after discussion with your team..............i was just pointing out the mechanics of the two insulins and why you may be getting problems....Its definetly worth trying to compensate with QA if you are not up for another injection, but in my own opinion, getting the BI bang on and the QA as low as possoble will give the most benefits............ Keep us posted on the results of your 16 units...... ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Jacket Potato No problem mate, only do what you are comfortable with...........as long as you know you dont need to be low 3 hours later, or high for dinner time......it just takes some experimenting and recording, you might not even need to split, might be a case of jagging up after you have finised eating............the cheese for sure will slow digestion even more, you should experiment with different toppings if you do find yourself eating them all the time....... |

Topic: General Discussion / BI back down? HiThanks for the reply. No I've not tried Levemir, I'm really reluctant to have another injection on a regular basis. I wonder if I go back to BI 16 tonight, keep an eye on my reuslts then think about upping my QA ratio. If I can't work it out I'll try Levemir but only as a last resort! Michelle |

Topic: General Discussion / Paper Diary http://www.dafneonline.co.uk/forums/1/topics/93Do what it says on this link, it works and is very quick, I got mine last week. If the link doesn't work it's the sticky in the general discussion bit on the forum. |

Topic: General Discussion / OneTouch users beware My normal meter is a OneTouch ultra... After putting in my prescription a week ago, and a couple of visits to the pharmacy, Boots told me this evening that there's a national supply problem with the OneTouch strips - I'm wondering if there any other users out there who've found this, or if Boots are fobbing me off. Also if this is the case I thought I'd warn others as they may need to make other plans - I was down to 2 strips so had to press the doctors for a spare meter, which they did give me, only to get home and find the strips expired in January 2009! Back to the pharmacy then... |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Jacket Potato I tend to be boring with the tatties actually, just cheese. And yes am talking about a lunch at 12 or 12.30 and having BG's in the 7's and it being in the low 3's by 3pm (so 3 to 3.5hr's later)...but again only on the Jacket Potato's so it does seem to be digestion causing it.Think I'll probably just carry on using an exception to my ratio for it. Least that way I avoid the hypo and any raises can be picked up at dinner any how or simply burnt off during the day due to how long it's taking. Thanks for the advice. |

Topic: General Discussion / Paper Diary Think you have to either get them from your DSN or buy them, from who I dont know, but I think the diary you are provided with has information on the back.........I personally use a home made spreadsheet, printed out onto A4, 6 days on each A4 sheet, 12 spaces for BG results.......which suits me better as I test a lot, maybe too much............ ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Hello G'day Daniel,I'm from Australia also. Welcome to this forum. I believe your priority ought to be to find a Dafne course. It is worth making the time. The carb counting etc is most useful in the context of Dafne, Once I did Dafne things began to fall into place. Helen |

Topic: General Discussion / Hello Hi Daniel, and welcome to the forum...............If you have any specific questions then fire away, dont think anyone who uses the forum could go through the whole curriculum though......... There is a free online carb counting course offered by Bournemouth Diabetes and Endocrine Center HERE..........that can get you up to speed with the main points, and then if you want you can come back and ask some more specific questions about your control you can.......... Being only 10 months diagnosed your pancreas may still be producing some insulin, so keep that in mind, you may only need small doses........... What insulin regime are you on and what are your doses................. ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Jacket Potato A jacket potatoe would generally take longer to digest, also the digestion depends on what topping you have, a cheese and beans one would take even longer...........When is your hypo...........? I would expect to see your insulin drop you low maybe 1.5-2.5 hours post meal............its really a case of trying to match up your insulin action to the digestive action.......... At lunch time I inject 30 -40 minutes before eating, this is because the digestion is faster than my insulin, so I need the insulin in and working long before I start eating, with your situation and for others where the food is either starchy, high in fat, or both its sometimes worth splitting your meal time injection, say 50% before you eat and 50% after you eat.............. This 50:50 split can be experimented with, maybe changing to 60:40 and so on, and also the time of the after meal dose can be moved to 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes, its all about experimenting and testing to see how it effects you personally......... Good luck with it................ ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Jacket Potato Ok, I did the counting only last week and still armed with the books...all good on paper. BUT every time I have a jacket tattie for lunch, I can guarantee a hypo...even by under valuing the CP's slightly on it. Anything else, pretty much isn't an issue, but a jacket potato never seems to come out on the same 1:1 ratio I'm on using the carb values from the books. This got me thinking, does a jacket tattie take quiet a while to break down? and thus it's over a longer period of time and as such the QA has already lowered the BG far to fast for the potato to balance? Otherwise it makes no sense at all that I would need a 1:1 ratio for all food, except a jacket potato which would have it's own 1:0.3 ratio. ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / BI back down? There have been a few people describing similar behaviors with there BGs and BI (Lantus).....If your having lots of hypos with the 17 units, then you need to put it down, however this means you may have to over compensate throughout the day with your QA insulin as this now lower dose, the 16, is not sufficient throughout the rest of the day......this can be managed with great difficulty......... It all boils down to the flexibility of Lantus, which for the majority of people is not enough. The next logical step would be to think about Levemir, and a split dose, you can establish a safe dose to keep you steady during the night, then you could give yourself a heavier, more accurate dose during the day to keep your numbers down and your ratios...... Have you tried Levemir.........? If you have and didn't get on with it, the Lantus can also be split, but changing doses and seeing an effect can take days, unlike Levemir..... |

Topic: General Discussion / Levemir versus Lantus I have had some success, I have found that getting single figures at 6:45 when I wake does depend on what food I have eaten as a before bed snack, delayed digestion seems to push numbers up, or it may even be too quick a digestion, pushing me down through the night then up in a response to the low.......for the most part it has been successful....... |
