Topic: General Discussion / Some advice please

Its definetly something to discuss with your team.....but they may just offer another background insulin that has a longer duration..................if you can prove with results how long it is actually lasting that would help.........

See how the higher dose of 24 goes, I suspect you may need to still go further, also the more units you put in, the longer its active duration, they may have told you this in the course...........so theoretically you could end up on 30 units and it may also last past the time when the hormones kick in...........

Keep up th good work........... Very Happy

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Jacket Potato

So a jacket potato behaves like pasta and rice? How weird!

I do remember my DAFNE team saying about how it's cooked effects it's out come... didn't click in my head that it was like pasta and rice though (probably because most potato doesn't change due to water, but in a way, for a jacket to behave differently to say chips, does make some sense when you think about it).

Topic: General Discussion / Some advice please

Not very good BS this morning at 11.2. Bedtime was at 11.7, had 1 cp and 4+7 QA along with my 22 BI.
That is me tried the 22 BI for 2 days so will try 24 tonight.

With regards to a cp free bedtime snack. I used to always have a cp free snack and it was only because the HC told me that was why I was going high.
With no carbs the brain was telling the liver to pump out glucose as it needed it.

Withy my BI being isophane and the duration being 8-14 hrs and I suspect it only lasts 89 hrs, would I better taking it 3x daily? 1 in the morning 8am another 1 at 4 or 5pm and then at bedtime. I know there is a risk of them overlapping but the morning one has ran out by 5 or 6pm.

If it lasted 14 hrs for me 2 a day would be fine. When first put on isophane, 15 yrs ago, was told take it at dinnertime which is ok if it lasted the full duration.
However, if it only lasted 10 hrs that would explain why I was always high in the morning. Take it at 5pm, 10 hrs later at 3am it has ran out so nothing to cover the dawn phenomenon which, incidentally I was never told about.

Thanks for all the help your giving me it is very much appreciated.

Best regards

Derek
ps they told me the metformin stops the liver producing glucose.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Jacket Potato

Hi guys,

Interesting discussion and strangely enough (contrary to what health professionals previously believed / understood / advised), jacket potatoes have a relatively fast absorption rate, so the CPs get into your blood stream pretty quickly.

We know from experience that different cooking methods (eg oven baked; microwaved; cooked in foil) appear to make a difference to the CP value of a potato once it's cooked, most likely due to how much water is lost in the cooking process, however the 'validated' nutritional text books give the 3CPs per 100g value which is what's stated in the DAFNE CP List.

Many DAFNE Educators suggest, where possible, to weigh the potato while it's raw, to get a more accurate value (based on 1.5 CPs per 100g) then it doesn't matter how it's cooked.

The other thing to consider is whether or not you eat the skin..... you may lose up to 1CP if you leave the skin Very Happy

Hope this helps the discussion?

Carolin

Topic: General Discussion / OneTouch users beware

Thanks for your replys all - my doctors surgery gave me a meter to tide me over but it turned out to be broken with expired test strips. So I went to the late night pharmacy (a different boots) and bought a new meter, whilst I was there I asked them if they had any OneTouch Ultra strips and they said... Yes! No supply problem or anything. So today I went into the original Boots to complain and tell them they had to refund me for the meter purchase - after going away to consult with the area manager they said they'd refund the meter, get my OneTouch strips in for tomorrow and also gave me a £10 gift card for the trouble. Guess they don't like being exposed as liars....

Anyway, the new meter I got is an AccuCheck Aviva Nano, and I much prefer it to the old OneTouch Ultra, so today I went into the docs and got my prescription changed to the Aviva strips/lancets.

The moral of the story - don't trust what the pharmacist tells you!

Hey Daniel, I"m from Melbourne too. Sounds like you're pretty level headed about having Diabetes only 10 months down the track, as I sure wasn't ! I only wished I'd heard about this forum before I'd done the Dafne course as it's extremely informative & supportive.

All the best.

A couple of weeks ago when I went to my local Morrison's pharmacy, I had the same problem. They too said there's a shortage, but gave me my prescription back so I could try elsewhere. Fortunately, another local pharmacy had plenty in stock!

I will be putting in a prescription again soon... hopefully no problems will come up (I go to a Lloyds/Co-Op usually).

I've only used a Boots once, can't say it was the most reliable service but sometimes it's good to know there is a 24 hour pharmacy option somewhere. Smile

Keep going with the 22 units and try and have a carb free night, I know this may be hard to do, but its worth it in the end, and it means you can change your dose confidently............

The main use of metformin is to help your body process insulin better, so dropping your resistance to it, used commonly in type 2 patients, whose main problem is resistance...............but as you have experienced it can upset the stomach, sometimes referred to as metfartin..........this in turn I would imagine lower your appetite and contribute to loss of weight.......

Resistance is also helped by activity, the more your muscles works, the more doors they create to let fuel in, and so absorb insulin much faster............but I am sure you have been hassled from the HCPs about that............ Laughing

Not sure about the healthcare side of things - still got much to look into. As for jobs - they are absolutely screaming out for nurses in western australia and prospects are much better than they are here in the UK.

Anyway as I said still much to look into etc.

Hi

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I increased my BI to 22 last night and it is better. This morning BS was 9.7 but I suspect my BI is only lasting maybe 9 hrs. The duration is 8-14 hrs. Took it last night at 11.30, 8.30 this morning was 9.7 but by 9.15 when I had breakfast was up to 11. I hope | understand it correctly.

As for metformin. Was on that for years. At first 2 x 500mg then upped to 2 x twice a day. They never told me what it actually done or any side effects just that it can help with weight loss.
I used to have severe problems with my bowels. When I needed to go, I needed to go.

I never suspected it would have anything to do with the metformin but it wasn't until late last year I was in hospital for a suspected DVT ( it wasn't a DVT it was phlebitis) and the doc there asked about medications I was on and if I ever had any problems with my bowels!!
She told me the metformin would be causing the bowel problems I was having so I stopped taking the metformin ad have been fine ever since.

Been and done.
I was glad of the emotional type questions as I have suffered the "Diabetic Blues" in the past.
This is a term not often heard of but I have and still do suffer periods of depression regarding my diabetes.
Therefore I was very glad that someone has actually asked how I feel about my diabetes.

I agree, I dont think the pharmaceutical side of things is there top priority, which is very surprising as they are most commonly known for this service.........

I use a local pharmacy, Rowland's its called, I email my surgery and 2 days later its in the pharmacy bagged up and ready, the wee woman behind the counter knows my name and my wife and sons, and goes straight for the order as soon as she sees me coming in........ fantastic, sorry if that upsets anyone, as I know some of the service you can get is utter pants........

I use the Optium Xceed meter and never ever had an issue with any prescriptions. I will say though that I find Boots very unreliable both in a personal and professional way.
They frequently tell me that there are supply issues with other prescription items yet when I go to another pharmacy there is no issue.

My personal advice is stay away from Boots.

Im very strict at recording my results i have everything on my pc,i have a program called co pilot,as for adjusting my doses im getting better its just hard when eating out.

We all find it hard eating out, but I suppose the more you do it the better you become, and if its only on special occasions, then hey, its OK to let loose every so often..........

It seems you are in the best position you could be in without DAFNE training............

Any help on readings or problem areas just ask...........
