Topic: General Discussion / hello

Hi and welcome...........

It seems as though your injection sites may be the culprit of your high readings. Where did you inject before you changed sites, and were do you inject now..........

If your insulin was not being absorbed then its likely you will need to go back to the beginning....so testing your background doses first then Humalog.....

Trying to stick to the recommended hypo treatment was hard at first, but you get to a point were you know over treating will give your higher readings.....

Its quite common for the liver to respond to hypos, that's its job, or one of them, at least, and it will release glucose to bring you back up, but as type 1 diabetics we cant rely on that, just in case.........

When your having these hypos, do you feel they are coming on quickly, or have they came on slowly.....

the quicker they come and the quicker you drop, the more likely the liver will help you out, which will push up your readings after a hypo, so best to catch them early, or make sure the hypos you do have can be predicted and expected, this will come in time when you get the doses fine tuned.......

Any more questions, just ask away....... Wink

Topic: General Discussion / hello

Hi
Just wanted to introduce myself, first time on DAFNE online. I am a DAFNE graduate who has had diabetes for 18 years. I am on BI Insultard currently 18u am and 16u pm and QA Humalog ratio 1-1.

I found the course extremely useful; however i am having some difficulties now in controlling my BG levels. Having read through some of the other topics in the forum, i was reassured to find others having similar difficulties. My BG levels are being wonderfully temperamental and I’m not having much fun trying to juggle everything about. Confused

I recently went back to hospital for my follow up and the nurse told me I needed to change injection sites as I had some lumps! This has proven to work and my BG levels have lowered considerably, but too much as I have had 7 hypo’s in the last 4 days!!! Crying or Very sad

I’m trying hard to treat by hypos as advised, as previously i wanted to eat anything and everything when hypoing! But does anyone find that following a hypo their BG spikes?

Me and the wife are expecting our second child in May. We went for our 20 week scan yesterday, all is well and although not 100% sure, they think its a girl, that would be my educated guess also from looking at the ultrasound.

To confirm 100% she is paying money at a private clinic who specialize in sexing unborn children, they do the 3d and 4d scans also..........

So happy news............ Laughing

Protein and fat all contribute to the glucose level, eventually, however small..............

I have seen quite a lot of folk who do this, mostly on the pump however...........

I believe is someone is on a naturally small amount of background insulin the more chance they will need to consider QA for non carb items due to the 'more insulin, last longer' principal except the less units you take, the shorter they last...............

Topic: General Discussion / Help please!

you would almost definitely benefit from a 3am test to confirm if your Lantus dose is enough, which it probably inst going by the blood glucose reading, the dawn phenomenon could be taking place also, a 3am test would also confirm this...............

Illness, as mentioned could also be contributing........

Also surprised about your 3 units correction, everyone is different but I would personally need 20 units on top of any food I was having.......

Speak to the 'professionals' as soon as you can and get that basal tested............... Laughing

Happy New Year to everyone and may 2012 be a happy, healthy year for you. While I was away over new year I ended up eating lots of food on the go as we walked around sightseeing (rather than sitting in cafes etc which I'm much more used to). I found myself worrying about how and where I was going to inject rather than enjoying my food. I often ended up sitting on benches and seats in crowded squares and streets that we were walking through and injecting (it felt to me) publically. It wasn't made any easier, or any more discrete, by the many layers of clothes I was wearing. I'd love to know how others manage to inject discretely while eating outside on the go as I just seem to end up all embarassed and awkward.

Happy New Year to all.
I too have the same problem , but have started injecting in my stomach which i am not too keen on but it get;s around the embarasment of taking off clothing to inject in my arm, i am also going to try using a pump which of course is more discreet and easier to use than an injection, have you considered a pump.

Topic: General Discussion / Driving Licence Renewal

Just to let you know - and not many people know this - the photo on a photo licence MUST be renewed every 10 years - it is invalid if the photo is more than 10 years old, and so if the photo is over 10 years old, and you renew due to having to do so due to the 3 year rule your licence is still invalid and technically you commit the offence of 'driving not in accordance with you licence' as the licence is invalid.

The DVLA have not taken the step of reminding those whose photo is due to expire or is already out of date, they feel it is down to the holder to sort out. There are many many people in the UK now driving with an invalid licence as the photo licence has been available for over 10 years now and this minor detail is not widely know about, or is ignored.

There are ways to tell - on the licence, whether the photo is less than 10 years old, however, most police officers do not know either, but most traffic officers do know - if you get stopped by them have your excuses ready but don't expect them to be believed.

Hi Simon, I'm a bit confused by your response. Your GP does DAFNE ? Generally DAFNE is run at DAFNE Centres which are hospitals like the one you did your course at. Hence my confusion by your reference to your GP doing it. Do you mean they do something similiar to DAFNE or that they actually run courses under the umbrella of one of the DAFNE Centres ? Where is the GP in the UK ? Just curious Smile

Marke

My GP is also a Diabetic specialist (part time) at a hospital, she runs the diabetic group at the surgery, and was very pleased I had done the Dafne course prior to my arrival at the surgery as she believes in its philosophy. The surgery itself does not run Dafne courses. Sorry for the confusion

Hi Yokel, I think the 3am test is the way forward, but the comment marke made very valid as adjustment of 3 units gets you back in range. Have you been poorly recently or feel you coming down with something. As I had an chest infection recently and really struggled to shake it and found I was waking up high but dropping down in range over course of morning while recovering. Just an idea maybe. hope you get sorted soon! Dean

I hate to suggest it, but a 3am test might be useful. It might help pin-point what is happening. You 'could' be hypo-ing but I would suspect that is unlikely. It could be 'dawn phenomenon' but it has been suggested to me that usually you have this from day one rather than it just starting to be an issue. However we are all different and there is no 100% guaranteed solution that works for everyone. It seems unlikely that your BI is not enough since you are on a single dose and if it was going to run out it would be in the evening and not the morning, also Lantus is supposed to be a 24hr insulin. It also seems odd that just 3 units brings you back in range. For most of us if we are that far over it would take a lot more than 3 units to get us back in range. You really do need to talk to your Diabetes team I suspect to help work out what is going on.

I would be really grateful for some advice - I am struggling to get hold of my diabetes team and wondered if anyone here could help me.
My results first thing in the morning are sky high every morning. This morning is was 26.1! Each morning I then add a correction of approx 3 units which then brings back to an acceptable level by lunchtime, where it stays fine for the rest of the day.
I wondered if I was going hypo in the night which was then swinging my sugar up but this morning I decided that 26.1 was too high for that.
I have lantus at bedtime and humalog through the day.
Thanks for your help and advice!

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios & Honeymoon Period.

I believe mine lasted a few years, however I have no details as I was diagnosed at the age of 10....33 years ago, however I found this short comment on a website I often use.

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/blood-glucose/honeymoon-phase.html

How long does the honeymoon period last?

There is no hard and fast rule for how long the honeymoon phase lasts amongst people with type 1 diabetes. The diabetes honeymoon phase can last for weeks, months or in some cases years.

Take care Christine

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Counting veg

If i eat a completely free carb meal i have totake insulin for non carb foods. i tend to count 0.5u to a portion of veg up to about 3 or 4 u, but i have done this over time to work out what i need. If i eat the non carb foods with carbs i dont tend to count them as it doesnt seem make much difference. Strange really Confused

With regard to JWo's problems with theHTC Sensation, I had the same problems with my Dell Streak, and still do. When running the app on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 however I do not have these problems. The two devices run different versions of Android and I had put it down to this but Marke has a point, it may not simply be the Android version but what each device does with it.

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Counting veg

Whilst there is some carbohydrate in most vegetables I find that it makes little difference most of the time. I am intrigued by what sjohno says though. As insulin works on carbs, and there are no carbs in meat or fish, why would he need insulin to counteract these?

I have a blackberry bold and would be happy to test. The thought of inputting blood sugars on the tube etc sounds too good to be true.
