Topic: General Discussion / Street Food I know what you are saying is true william but I can fully appreciate the fact that some of us prefer not to advertise the fact we live with diabetes...after 33 years, I am still very wary who I disclose my condition to due to a huge amount of ignorance which bores me silly. I have to feel completely at ease to inject in front of somebody and when in a public environment my aim is to be extremely discreet.Christine |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Counting veg
Do you have the same amount of carbs each day and at the same time? What do you have at 20:00pm... |

Topic: General Discussion / Street Food You have no reason to be embarrsed about your injection. You dont see asthma suffers skulking in corners, so why should you. We didnt ask for Diabetes but do have a right to live normal lives. If people dont like it they can look away. All the best for the future. |

Topic: General Discussion / Ratios & Honeymoon Period. Hi Matt, I have been type 1 for two years on the 1st of Feb this year and did my DAFNE course on March last year which was really helpful but a little of it was not completely relevant since I was in my honeymoon phase.Nearly a year on from doing my course I am still in my honeymoon phase as on < 0.5:1 at breakfast and 1:1 for meals and snacks. I am on Novorapid and Lantus at night before bed. My last appt at the diabetic clinic at hospital on Nov 11, I was advised I was still on my honeymoon phase and was advised could last months or years but as I am trying for a child my honeymoon phase will end once I am pregnant. Right now I'm just glad to have a low HbA1C of 40 (5.8 % Old school) but this will prob not last once my honeymoon phase is over so am enjoying it while I can ![]() All the best and good luck ![]() Cheers, Anele. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Counting veg Thanks for your replies, always good to hear other people's experiences - Alp147, I'm with you on this, if I have say a sunday dinner type meal with potatoes, yorkshire pud, etc. I would bolus for these, but not for carrots, peas, etc. However, if I have just veg based then i would need to take insulin to cover. If I want to have a proper carb free meal for the purposes of checking basal rates I stay away from veg and have something like a plain omelette with cheese - sadly this won't work for you though I don't suppose SJohno; isn't life difficult sometimes..! I definitely think its to do with being on very small amounts of insulin as to how tiny amounts of carbs affect you - are you on a small amount, Sjohno? |

Topic: General Discussion / SE KENT PCT DAFNE scrapped All, If anyone reads this, we need your help. The wonderful South East Kent PCT has decided to stop DAFNE in favour of BERTIE. The arguement is it is only a 4 day course and so they will be able to offer more courses. This seems more than a little unlikely. As ever I suspect its a 'done deal' but if like me you are unhappy about this change and are a graduate from South East Kent, please respond to this thread. I intend to contact the local PCT and the local MP to ask some pertinent questions, such as what ongoing support will there be for DAFNE graduates, how do they explain that BERTIE is not fully QUIPP acredited despite the PCT claiming it is.I would be happier if I believed that this was being done for the benefit of Diabetics within the PCT's area, but I suspect it is just a tick the box/cost cutting exercise. |

Topic: General Discussion / Driving Licence Renewal I was given the info by an officer I know - he wouldn't tell me how to check, the only info I can find re this is to look at section 4b on the plastic card bit and it will say when the photo/licence expires, this is fine for most people, except for us 3 year holders it doesn't help at all.The DVLA web site just states that for short term licence holders we will be told, but I wasn't. |

Topic: General Discussion / hello Do you inject in your bum and thighs? They are good spots also.............If you just get in the habit and consider those areas you will be good...... As your doses now need reevaluating, its likely you will have hypos like these where its a quick drop, unlike me where it would be a slower drop due to a mis-calculation of carbs, extra activity etc...........so the quick drop if panicking your body [good hypo warnings] and then the pancreas releases glucagon, which drives up blood glucose and insulin resistance, resulting in higher readings.............. So the quicker you test your background needs the better, if the hypos are getting bad, chop a few units of your BI dose straight away.......... I would contact your team also if you need to, as my experience wont necessarily reflect others....... |

Topic: General Discussion / hello Thanks for quick response![]() My recent hypos have been coming on very quickly but i am fortunate that i have good warning signs, but i have found that i tend to go higher at the next BG read. |

Topic: General Discussion / hello Hi and welcome...........It seems as though your injection sites may be the culprit of your high readings. Where did you inject before you changed sites, and were do you inject now.......... If your insulin was not being absorbed then its likely you will need to go back to the beginning....so testing your background doses first then Humalog..... Trying to stick to the recommended hypo treatment was hard at first, but you get to a point were you know over treating will give your higher readings..... Its quite common for the liver to respond to hypos, that's its job, or one of them, at least, and it will release glucose to bring you back up, but as type 1 diabetics we cant rely on that, just in case......... When your having these hypos, do you feel they are coming on quickly, or have they came on slowly..... the quicker they come and the quicker you drop, the more likely the liver will help you out, which will push up your readings after a hypo, so best to catch them early, or make sure the hypos you do have can be predicted and expected, this will come in time when you get the doses fine tuned....... Any more questions, just ask away....... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / hello HiJust wanted to introduce myself, first time on DAFNE online. I am a DAFNE graduate who has had diabetes for 18 years. I am on BI Insultard currently 18u am and 16u pm and QA Humalog ratio 1-1. I found the course extremely useful; however i am having some difficulties now in controlling my BG levels. Having read through some of the other topics in the forum, i was reassured to find others having similar difficulties. My BG levels are being wonderfully temperamental and I’m not having much fun trying to juggle everything about. ![]() I recently went back to hospital for my follow up and the nurse told me I needed to change injection sites as I had some lumps! This has proven to work and my BG levels have lowered considerably, but too much as I have had 7 hypo’s in the last 4 days!!! ![]() I’m trying hard to treat by hypos as advised, as previously i wanted to eat anything and everything when hypoing! But does anyone find that following a hypo their BG spikes? |

Topic: General Discussion / Exciting news............ Me and the wife are expecting our second child in May. We went for our 20 week scan yesterday, all is well and although not 100% sure, they think its a girl, that would be my educated guess also from looking at the ultrasound. To confirm 100% she is paying money at a private clinic who specialize in sexing unborn children, they do the 3d and 4d scans also.......... So happy news............ ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Counting veg Protein and fat all contribute to the glucose level, eventually, however small..............I have seen quite a lot of folk who do this, mostly on the pump however........... I believe is someone is on a naturally small amount of background insulin the more chance they will need to consider QA for non carb items due to the 'more insulin, last longer' principal except the less units you take, the shorter they last............... |

Topic: General Discussion / Help please! you would almost definitely benefit from a 3am test to confirm if your Lantus dose is enough, which it probably inst going by the blood glucose reading, the dawn phenomenon could be taking place also, a 3am test would also confirm this...............Illness, as mentioned could also be contributing........ Also surprised about your 3 units correction, everyone is different but I would personally need 20 units on top of any food I was having....... Speak to the 'professionals' as soon as you can and get that basal tested............... ![]() |
