Topic: General Discussion / For Warwick Hello again,I have shared my diary with you - look at the shared diaries link to the top right of this page. I often learn better from examples than from theory. You can take a look at how I am recording my readings, and then use it to decide what readings you need to record. Cheers, Warwick. |

Topic: General Discussion / For Warwick Cool. Thanks for that. I should have told you that before bed readings are important too. Sorry about that. If you can start recording those too, that would be excellent. I'll take a look at this overnight and see if I can see any patterns.Readings to record: Before breakfast, lunch, dinner and bed. Hypos, and the amount of carb taken to correct (usually 2.5-3 CPs) Before exercise and after exercise, and if you can put in the notes column the duration and intensity of the exercise, that would be great. Also the amount of carb taken before, during and after exercise. I often have a 750 ml bottle of make-your-own-from-powder Gatorade during running which for me works out to be 4.5 CPs. Any snacks between meals that are more than 1.5 CP. Any correctional doses between meals - e.g say you feel a bit odd, you take a reading, find you are in the twenties - record the amount of QA insulin you take to correct this. Cheers, Warwick. |

Topic: General Discussion / For Warwick WarwickAs promised here are my BG diary entires-not been keeping them as up to date as I'd hoped but it gives you an idea of what I am doing and BG results Any guidance much appreciated!! I find I tend to go low after HIIT exercise or long distance walking-need to readjust for this as I then have extra to relieve the hypo then go high-you can see I yo-yo a fair bit |

Thanks for that Helen that is really interesting. I didn't realise that there were such differeing views on the test. If it is based on the 2 week thing then with my readings of 8.5 and 7.6, I would have expected the latter one to be higher, as 2 weeks prior to that I had an operation (having said that my readings weren't wildly up and down). Oh well! But thanks for that, that is really enlightening. I will stop panicking now. |

Diane, I tried to find a document (or 2) to support my understanding that the previous two weeks can radically effect HbA1cs. Wikipedia (HbA1C) cites the Hemoglobin A1c Fact Sheet from Michigan Diabetes Research & Training Center (26/12/2007) "some researchers state that the major proportion of its (HbA1c) value is weighted towards the most recent 2-4 weeks." Further "internet" research came up with support for it being a guide and many sites indicate that it is an assessment of the glycated haemoglobin over a period lasting anything from 6-12 weeks. Some sites are very dogmatic and state without qualification that it is the average over 12 weeks. Most are not as absolute. My experience came from two episodes where I was quite sick and had BGs all over the place just prior to my regular blood test and Endocrinologist appointment As my HbA1c's are usually boringly consistent I was astonished when it came back... I was then told (by the Endocrinologist) not to worry but to have it done again in 6 weeks. It was then back to its usual value. Similarly, last Nov when I came back from overseas with a bacterial infection in the blood! Helen |

Interesting..not an exact science, but a 90 day average...just didnt think 2 weeks could provide such differing results. Will bear in mind for any similar future occasion. |

Topic: General Discussion / Bedtime / Morning BS Yes i would definitely do 3am tests. Waking up at levels of 2 and 3 suggest too much BI overnight. |

Topic: General Discussion / Bedtime / Morning BS I would definitely recommend, 3am test.......Have you considered doing any? Waking up at those levels means there it too much insulin in the system.......!! So your plan to move timings might not be the best strategy to solve the problem.... |

Topic: General Discussion / Bedtime / Morning BS I'm now in the process of bringing BI to a morning dose instead of night time (10.00pm). Going to do it backwards so did it 1 hour earlier (9.00pm). Will leave it at this time for 4/5 days before altering again. Hope this is the right way of doing it rather than doing it in one big jump missing a night time dose and having to watch out for a high BS the next morning. |

Topic: General Discussion / T1 Diabetes cured in dogs, study suggests I think the research does mean something, however applying it to people AND ensuring its safe and doesn't have side-effects is sadly a long slow process. Eventually they will have a 'cure' for Type 1, but will it be in our life time ? Who knows, we can only hope. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Bread I've not noticed any difference on the odd occasion when I've eaten wholemeal personally.Saying that, I've sometimes found things like rolls to be seemingly wrong before - always best to weigh them out and doing the math with the 100g label before preparing to eat them in a lot of cases. I also never assume any more that one brand's medium slice is the same as another brand's medium slice.... they can vary so much. Pain in the bum eh! Edit: Just to add, half a unit of CP or QA difference can mean a lot to me so I'm very fussy with my checking of numbers and doing calculations. |

Topic: General Discussion / 7-day waking average Oooh I hate it when that happens but sometimes it's a necessary evil I suppose... you can't live in 100% fear... a miscalculated deep-pan pizza has taken me to 32 BG before while we're confessing...! ;_; |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Bread Does anyone else have completely different responses to different breads? I normally have wholemeal or granary which work fine for me, but when I allow myself white sliced (bacon and egg sandwich on Sunday mornings) or white crusty rolls things seem to go haywire and I end up with much higher BGs than the carbs would suggest. (I have a similar problem with fresh pasta vs. dried)Stew |
