Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Stacking Insulin stacking is taking further QA, when the previous QA taken on board is not yet all used up. It makes it a little more difficult to predict where your BGs will end up when all the QA injected has finished acting. It isn't really something to be scared of, but just be aware that the margin for error is a bit higher as a result of multiple injections within the action period of the QA.If you test several times afterwards, around the peak action period of the QA (usually about 90 minutes after the injection), and every 20 minutes after that until the QA runs out, then you should be able to catch any major swings up or down, and take corrective action. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Hand wipes Best way would be to buy a pack, test after wiping with them, then wash your hands with soap and water, and try again. If the results aren't markedly different, then you should be fine. |

Given that your readings look OK previous to this, I suggest that you follow the sick day rules in your DAFNE manual. It looks much more like sickness than Dawn Phenomenon, although if it stays like this for a while, then as Allan says, you may want to try a 3 am test to check. If your 3 am test is within range, but your morning BGs are high, then that would indicate dawn phenomenon. |

Have you tried the dreaded 3 am test to see if you get the morning rise? If you are ill and if it was me I'd up my BI by 1u just while I'm ill and I'd also follow the sickness stepwise thing. You could try 1u of QA if high before bed and no CP. Keep locazade handy though just in case. There is also the DAFNE team from SWE center. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / High Morning Blood Sugar Hi there,I completed the DAFNE course just under 2 weeks ago, I have been following the adjustments accordingly but on the last three mornings my readings are extremely high like 20 and 23, And I then spend the rest of the day trying to bring them back to normal. I am not sure if it's because I don't feel too good, but my BI has been checked and is fine, so I was not adjusting that, it just seems to go up in the night after doing my Background Insulin! Do you have any suggestions what I can do to alleviate this? |

Topic: General Discussion / Coeliac&Type 1 I have had type 1 Diabetes for 34 years, was diagnosed with Coeliac 1 year ago. You can still eat Pasta, Spaghetti, Bread, Rolls as long as it's Coeliac, I also found it a bit daunting at first, but you will get it eventually, it seems to be coming up quite a lot now in the market, so I think it is being better recognised. If you look closely at packets, it doesn't always have to say Coeliac, I.e. Bisto Best Gravy is fine, so is Kellogg's Rice Crispies Multi Cereal Shapes as long as you are okay with oats, this is the one on the advert where the little girl dresses up as a fish!Hope this helps. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Low Carb Cookbooks Ta Warwick! DAFNE was a real revelation to me: 42 years a diabetic, started on glass syringes and urine testing: about ten min injection training with an orange, and away you go. Diet sheet was so basic! Even when I was taken off animal insulin and put on Humalog, no further instruction! I only found out the ten second injection after a run of particularly bad blood tests! As for injecting for what you eat,the DAFNE method has introduced some reason for the blood tests, and as I noted more disciplined eating! Even tonight with quite a high CHO meal, injection was 7 units less than pre DAFNE! Only thing now is to get a little bit of gym work in to complete the good work.....![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Continuous glucose monitoring I was chatting to Jackie, one of the DAFNE Doctors at Sheffield this morning and she told me about this upcoming system for continuous glucose monitoring. I was lucky to have a go with the Freestyle Navigator continuous monitoring system a month or so ago, and it seems this new system, the Freestyle Libre, is an evolution of the navigator. I for one found it really useful to get a continuous view of my blood glucose, to see how my body responds to food and insulin in (near) real time. If you're interested to learn more, there is an information and sign up page here: https://changeglucosemonitoring.co.uk/ |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Low Carb Cookbooks Hey Neville,I'm finding that focusing on getting protein every meal is really cutting own on my desire for carbs. When I have sweet treats (caramel slices, sigh), I don't actually feel full afterwards and I keep wanting more. But with a meal of eggs, or lentil soup, or beans, I stay full until the next meal time. Because I am eating less carbs, I need less insulin and it is far easier to avoid the highs and lows I was experiencing previously. Al the best with your A1c. Warwick. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Low Carb Cookbooks I was very impressed with my DAFNE course, completed in April, and have achieved a much more stable set of blood test results: my aim is to get my Hb1c down below 8 (old money), and looking at my records it may be possible! I m on a lot less insulin, for more or less similar amounts of food. At last after 40 odd years of diabetes I m achieving some kind of consistent control! I ve given up the crafty trips to the sweetie machine at work, so hopefully some weight loss will follow.....! I also recommend the course to any type 1 diabetics I meet, its been so good for me! Glad to know its worked for others as well!![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / sensitivity The season/temperature can change your insulin sensitivity. Your level of hydration too. Have you only just started walking the dog or is this something that you have been doing a long time? Often an increase in activity will lead to lows if basal insulin is not adjusted for that. |

Topic: General Discussion / sensitivity I suppose insulin sensitivity can be described as how well/efficiently the cells of your body take up the glucose in the blood stream..........it has been illustrated somewhere that each cell in the body has a door on it which takes in the glucose, on the door is a key hole, the key is the insulin. As the body increases its activity and the muscles start to become more active, the number of doors which let in the glucose are increased in order to get more fuel in quicker....... its a crude picture I am painting but over time at least, extra activity will mean that your body will need less insulin to get the same amount of glucose in a previously needed, this means you will have extra insulin swimming about which will send you low...... this effect though is different from a short term increase in activity, like a walk where the increased activity means the stores of fuel in your muscles are used up, and then the muscles try to replenish their stores, which again, takes glucose from the blood and send you low, then and possibly later in the day..... it sound to me though, that you may need to adjust your insulin, do a basal check as your basal needs can change and will change all the time.....if that dose is good, you can change your bolus doses....... |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Low Carb Cookbooks Wow. Your stories beat mine :-)And congratulations on the excellent weight, HbA1c and reduced pain. My mum suffered from RA, and I know from that how debilitating it can be. I'm very pro-DAFNE too. I recommend it to every type 1 I meet. Certainly the amount of knowledge I have compared to pre-course is vast. And so helpful in knowing how to beat high or low BGs. Take care, Warwick. |
