Topic: General Discussion / My BGs - lots of drops here
I have had a good bout of readings lately as I am on the slimming world diet with the misses, so less insulin going in, at least 20 units a day, but the carbs have been just as much though, 200-250g, so I don't know why really......the slimming world is a lot less fat and probably much slower digested/absorbed foods |

Topic: General Discussion / Welfare? I read about this............it was terrible........I don't believe his dying of ketoacidosis was down to him not having money, it was because he didn't take his insulin.... its very likely that he stopped taking it because he didn't want to go low with no food, but if he was on MDI, then he wouldn't have had to stop his insulin, but I also believe he wouldn't have been on MDI but a mixed twice a day one....... so was it down to the welfare system, no, it was down to the healthcare professionals not giving him the support he needed, or was it? did he attend clinics? did he take care of himself.....? I have been exactly in this situation, still employed but my situation meant I had literally no money for any food for a few months, I stopped my mix insulin and lost a lot of weight and was ill....... there is a lot of unknowns in this case, but ultimately it is very sad and not a nice way to go that's for sure..... |

Topic: General Discussion / Welfare? Hope nobody minds me posting this:http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/killed-benefits-cuts-starving-soldier-3923771 I don't know all the facts, but I wondered if anyone has any thoughts because this is hardly the first time I've read about people dying on the welfare state. I'm not wanting to generate divisive political rants, but it seems to me that if you are disabled or have a long term condition then you're up against it if you lose your job. As someone with type 1, this isn't a great prospect. |

Wednesday and Thursday look quite good. If that keeps looking stable, then you may want to stay as you are. By the way, could you change your notation a little, so that if for example, you are high at dinner time, and are taking 4 units to cover the evening meal, and a couple of units to bring down the high BGs, you write 4+2 in the QA field? And if you are only taking a corrective dose and not having any carbs, then something like 0+2 is good. It just helps to see what you were taking for any carbs, and what you were taking for corrections. Thanks. |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / sports massage for pump user I might be totally ignorant of the effects of massage but I wouldn't assume that anything would happen to the BG level........Obviously circulation is going to be affected and there maybe some additional hormone releases..........but what affect will that have on your levels, who knows........ Have you had this done before......? |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Dvla insulin pump Neither did I............All they are concerned about is that your are on insulin, same applies for folk on MDI and Type 2s on insulin, and any other type that's on insulin..... ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Grapes/fruit generally high in sugar in low in carbs........that sounds strange saying that, as they are the same, NO?I think the glucose from grapes can hit the bloodstream faster when more ripe maybe....... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Pizza, chinese, indian.... When I was injecting, between 30 minutes and an hour usually seen me OK, most of the time, but then there were some times were it just didn't work.........I only really found the need to split with pizzas etc, Indians and Chinese never really needed it, as long as I got my insulin in about 30-45 minutes before hand I was OK....... but as we all know, you need to ascertain your own personal strategy for foods like these..... ![]() |

Topic: General Discussion / Pizza, chinese, indian.... Hi,I think for these kind of food you might need to adjust your QA insulin rather than the BI. Some Indian's curries/ sauces are high in sugar. I am usually high after an Indian meal such as the butter chicken. |

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin and power loss Thanks for info.I was aware of the "30 day" rule, but my case was slightly different in that the insulin would have warmed up to some extent then been chilled again before use. Suppose its similar to the labels on food that say it mustn't be refrozen after thawing out. |

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin and power loss Previous post about broken pens, I asked about carrying spare cartridges, someone said that Insulin as long as it doesn't get too hot or cold can be out of the fridge for 30 days, I have had a spare and one in my pen for days at room temp (I always worry when in hot countries about this). |

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin and power loss If the door was shut ,and the room was at normal temperature I would think that your insulin would be fine.A fridge will usually stay cool for hours. I have carried a pen in my pocket for a day before now with no bad effects. If the insulin is still showing as clear in the syringe you should be fine |

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin and power loss Due to a power loss when away, my insulin (Novarapid & Levemir) were left in the fridge with no power for up to 24 hrs. Door wasn't opened during this time. I've since just left in the fridge to cool down again. Unsure how hot the kitchen was (North East Scotland so not extreme) but over 60F.Anyone think if this insulin may have been affected by this warming up? Thanks. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Grapes/fruit generally Hi,Grapes are high in sugar but low in carbs and I try to avoid eating them but when I do I inject QA accordingly. I think it is a good idea to refer to DAFNE carbs counting booklet and check the grapes to see how much QA you need. |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / Low Carb Cookbooks Hi,I'm also following low carbs diet and finding it just great as I inject less insulin. I started this five months ago and lost 7kg, even though my weight was always within the standard, but i feel healthier. ![]() |

Topic: Carbohydrate Counting / totally lost with nutritional info If you use the per 100g section, you need to weigh the portion you have then calculate the amount of carbs in your portion, then the amount of insulin depending on you ratios at that time of day. Personally, if it gives individual (such as a slice of bread) I use that.I also use the carbsandcals app when out and about to aid carb counting/guessing. I also use at home if I haven't weighed the food e.g jacket potato! Am sure no one gets it right 100% of the time, we can only do our best and diabetes plays it own game so what you do for a specific food one day may not be the same the next time you eat that food. Don't beat yourself up when it goes wrong tho! ![]() |

Topic: Questions for HCPs / Dvla insulin pump I didn't tell them when changed to a pump from MDI last year...the rules for driving 'under influence of insulin' are the same. The form doesn't give option for insulin pump anyway, just insulin injection. |

Hi I have recently started pumping and I am going for a sports massage to help with sports injuries, will my blood glucose go up or down? will I need a temp basil? or does it just vary from person to person? |
