Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter)

Sorry to hear of your problems with obtaining it, Tom. I've been on the system for over 3 weeks and have found it an enormous help and well worth the expense. I recently ordered my next month's supply which took almost 1 week to arrive but there was no problem with getting the order accepted even though I have not signed up to an ongoing subscription yet; I felt I should give it a fair trial before commiting myself to 12 months subscription. I do hope Sarah will be able to shed light on the current situation.
Every good wish, SB

Hi Tom

Sorry to hear, that you are having trouble will getting your order I have been using the kit for 3 weeks now, and still finding it very good, I was thinking of doing there subscription, so I will see what they say when I phone tomorrow, I will let you know if I can order more. I wonder if the kit has proved more popular than they thought

Hi Guys,

A huge thanks to all of those who have provided in-depth reviews on your experiences with the Freestyle Libre monitor. It's been very helpful (so helpful that I am in the process of trying to get one myself!) However, when I've tried to purchase my Abbott Freestyle Libre starter pack it is telling me that because I'm not an existing customer I won't be able to order one until the new year Sad

I am just wondering if anybody knows a way around this, or if this has been the case for other people, as I am dying to get started!

Thank you.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / The Art of Diabetes Biomedical Science.

Hi,

I am artist with T1DM looking to make artworks in response to diabetic biomedical science and I am looking for a HCP institution to collaborate with me on the project.

You can see examples of my work on my website where there is short animation I have made about diabetes, blood tests and carbohydrate counting using the round protective lancet caps from blood test kits amassed over several years of tests.

Animation: http://garethwmorgan.com/?page_id=1669

There is also an outline of my artworks in response to diabetic biomedical science proposal. If you'd like to help me on this or have an any suggestions how I can get the project up and running please let me know.

Many thanks,
Gareth

Topic: General Discussion / Insulin Pumps

I started on Omnipod last week after >40 years of injections. Still learning about it and adjusting basal and bolus levels but initial feedback is very positive. I've seen a 30% decrease in insulin usage (TDD), so that will counter some of the additional costs, and having to dispose of any unused insulin every 3 days when the pod is changed. On that subject I expect to reduce the amount I fill the pod with, once I have a clearer idea of amount I'm using in 3 days.

The only problems I'd mention are:
  • integral meter in PDM uses original Abbott Freestyle (not Lite) strips. As far as I can see it's no longer possible to buy a standalone meter that uses these strips, so any fallback (which was advised in my training) requires carrying another meter and strips
  • no means of recording correction carbs due to hypo
  • no means of adding text comments to any entries. As a result I'm still using dafneonline app to record bolus, BS and carb data with comments
  • no access to data stored in PDM except through provided PC software and pdf format export

Is it worth having? Yes so far. The real test will be with HBA1c readings and improved hypo awareness in future.

Maybe we need to start a campaign to make personal data available in useable formats? I just started with an OmniPod last week and one complaint I have so far is that their fancy software which displays the data on a PC will only export to pdf. Whilst their graphs and reports are pretty good, the other thing you can easily do is to record comments about what's been eaten, what exercise taken etc. I'm still doing that in the dafneonline app, but am struggling to combine that data which can be exported in csv format, with the pdf from the pump.

To my mind the data gathered by these devices belongs to the user not the manufacturer and should therefore be made readily available outside of their applications.

I have had problems with high and low blood glucose, can this cause problems with sleep even hours after correction?

Is it just recommended for take-away type foods or are there others I should be watching out for?

It can be different for all diabetics but a lot of diabetics struggle to get pizza in particular right- I seem to have all other take away foods ok but pizza is my nemesis. I'd just say if u hit a particular high or low when eating certain foods when u eat them next time just check for a pattern so u know what works for you. Dafne really did change my whole outlook on being diabetic and I'm now 5 months pregnant with a hba1c that is spot on & for the first time,I feel in control.

Hope that helps x

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / iOS 8 health integration

Hi,

An update to the app (now version 2.1.1) will be hitting the App Store later today. With this update I've added in the Apple Health integration for Blood Glucose and Carbohydrates. For carbs it will take your CP intake when you save an entry and multiply by 10 to get the carb intake in grams. For the Blood Glucose these are saved in mmol/l however whilst they are currently being saved into Health they are not visible due to Apple removing this facility in a recent update. They will be fixing this soon so that you can see your Glucose in the Health app. For more info on this issue see here

As always feedback is encouraged - you can post on the forums or get in touch with me via email

If I remember right, for anything more than 1cp you should inject. I'm on the same ratio all day so not sure which ratio you would use though. There is a link to the course handbook top right on this page if you want to be sure.

Topic: General Discussion / Cyborg Times (new BG meter)

I have just played with the software for the first time so thought I'd do another update.

I wasn't expecting much from it really but it's pretty swish, easy to use, some interesting reports and they're nicely presented. They can be easily saved as pdf files to email, or print and show your HCP.

As previously stated, you can only view the reports with the reader connected and cannot save the historical data in the software. However,I'm very pleased to say you CAN export the data to a text file and open it up in Excel. I was desperate to see this option as I wanted to be able to do my own analysis but to be honest now I've seen the software I'm not sure how much value I can add.

On a personal note, the best thing I saw was the estimated HbA1c figure at the top of the page. I've had problems with my mental health and even when feeling well I have really struggled not to hide from my glucose levels. This machine has come along at the perfect time for me, as I get back to work and something approaching a routine and began trying to remember what I'm supposed to be doing! Anyway, the cold hard facts are that my last HbA1c was 13%, yes that's right 13% Shocked According to these reports, after 8 days of properly monitoring, it's estimating 7.1% Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy . I know this is due to me getting my a@#$ in gear and doing all my injections etc. and not just getting a new monitor but I really do think the Libre has been a massive catalyst and has made me feel more in control of my diabetes than I ever have been.
