I expect with a GP letter airports should be fine, I'm not a pumper, but I assume they let pumps through Very Happy

I don't suppose anyone has gone through airport security with a Libre yet??

I was having a general conversation about airports with someone and suddenly wondered what they would make of the sensor?!

If nobody else reports before August I shall find out myself :-)

Mark, I remain convinced that you are testing equipment which will be standard in a few years time. It's as big a change as the move from urine testing to blood glucose monitoring and as such it will take time for the cost to reduce, for the technology to improve and for the likes of the DVLA to "accept" the readings. On the latter point, when I get one (no if in this sentence) then I will not be testing with a monitor before driving and will be happy to argue the case with the DVLA. In my opinion its clear that knowledge of the rate and direction of change in BG gives far more useful information than a slightly more accurate single reading with no information about direction of change.

Anyway, please continue with the updates, even though they're making me jealous javascript:emoticon('Laughing')

In terms of questions, do Abbott give any advice on injecting in the same arm as the sensor is attached?

Hi Peter, at my DAFNE refresher we were told that it is now recommended to NOT inject in the arm. They are saying to use stomach, thighs and bum. Might be worth checking with your DAFNE rep.

Topic: General Discussion / Help with Blood Sugars

I don't know if this will help. I think it is a very individual thing. I have had Type 1 now for nearly 21 years and have always had reasonable control with Hba1C readings in the right range. I never counted carbs in vegetables.

Following an illness this year I now have to take steroids. As we all know this plays havoc with BG control. I have just managed to regain some control but I now have to count my vegetables, root vegs, squashes, peas, even tomatoes.

I think we all have to act on our individual experiences. If you show a trend following certain foods then I think action should be taken.

Derek, I expect you have weighing scales, I would establish the carb content of your vegetables and would start by increasing insulin for half that amount, and then carry on increasing until desired BG is achieved. Good Luck

What happens with your BGs when you have a less veg heavy breakfast for comparison?

I agree with stephen that the release is too slow to bother counting, though I think it may matter with a large amount. I'm not sure what the amount is exactly though, sorry. Sad

Most of the time I do not worry about veg, especially if having with other carbohydrates as well. I exercise eating with carbs for protein after reading Ginger Vieira's "Your Diabetes Science Experiment" . I will rarely eat meat foods on their own now because I don't know how much insulin I'll need to take (because it apparently converts into carbs), but if I stick to low amounts of veg, I don't worry.

Body's are complicated things and it's definitely within the realms of possibility that our body's will all have different needs. Hope y'all can find yours sooner rather than later.

Topic: General Discussion / BG Control

Welcome mins.

Have you done the DAFNE course?

How often do you go as high as 20BG after lunch? 20BG is very high at the 3 hour insulin working mark (you've not stated what insulins you take so I'm going to assume your QA is one that can work 2-5 hours).

If you are still very high despite a correction mid-QA working time, you may have to up your lunchtime ratio to 1.5QA:1CP and see what that does for a couple of days. However, another thing to factor in is your carbohydrate counting - how sure were you of your total? Was it guesswork?

How confident are you in your BI? Does it hold you steady?

Sorry about all the questions. Hope you're doing okay.

Hi derekh1967,
I may be wrong about this but my impression is that if the CHO count from the vegetables is reasonably low one can ignore it. I think that 85 g CHO may be a fairly hefty amount and it is possible that you may need to count the vegetables in your CHO if more than say 30G but perhaps at 30-50% of their true value. I.e 85g as if they were 30-40 G. I have had type 1 diabetes for 47 years and have been carbohydrate counting all that time but my experience has been that I do have to count some items which in theory one should be able to ignore but it depends on the amount. Thus if I have one or two vegetarian(soya) sausages I can disregard it but if I were to have 3 or 4 at one meal I may need to allow a little insulin bolus increment to cover it. I do realise that everyone is different and what works for me may not work for you. I think DAFNE rules are very helpful in general but may need a bit of tweaking for individual cases ( I do hope this is not regrded as heretical ! ).
Interesting to see what others think.
All the best
sb

Hi All,
Happy Christmas to you all.
I have a question and some advice about injecting for vegetables.
I follow the dafne rules of not injecting for vegetables but my BS always goes high.
Today breakfast at 8:45 my BS was 8.7 and I just checked at 13:10 and my BS was at 13.5. 4.5hrs later, using the 3-5hr duration I would think the insulin would have ran out.

Hi
I am finding it difficult lately in controlling my blood glucose and intake of insulin combined.

My BG readings are very irregular eg. 7am readings from low as 3.4 and sometimes 12.4

I take BI - (am) 8units - (pm) 7units
QA - variance

even during the day I get various readings from 1.9 - 10.3?

Topic: General Discussion / WARNING - ensure you have a valid medical exemption certificate

Hi, I collected my prescription yesterday, and as normal, ticked the box to say i have a valid exemption certificate. The pharmacist told me that they have to tick a box on the prescription if they havent seen proof of exemption, and presumably this is then checked by the NHS Business Services Authority. Luckily I found mine hidden away in the depths of my handbag, and its valid until 2019. She also gave me a helpful booklet entitled "claiming free prescriptions?"
You also need to be aware if you have a child/young adult!, who is diabetic, who is going to be 19 shortly, as they will need to apply for an exemption certificate as well.

Topic: DAFNE Online Mobile / How to upload diary from app to website

Hi Catsalice,

If you have Diary Upload turned on in the settings and have put the right username and password in then the app will automatically upload new entries when you save them, you don't need to do anything else.

Thanks,

Simon

For the life of me I cannot work out how to upload readings from the app to the online site from my iPhone 5s. I have Diary Upload to on and am on the online website on my laptop and my phone. I'm not tech savvy and this is bugging me so all help gratefully received.

The Optium meter only plays up when the battery gets cold. Try to keep in close to you and it should be fine. It will warm up when you stop in a nice warm restaurant for lunch! Enjoy yourself.

Topic: General Discussion / qa ratio

Take whatever ratio needed john m. But make changes as part of a controlled long-term evolution based upon your findings over the weeks and months to come.
My lunch ratio is currently 2.5:1 and I report it as 2.5. On this basis, your ratios for Friday would be 2, 0.5 and 1.
Your text implies that you are using 1.5:1 for lunch which would normally be reported as 1.5 but has been reported as 0.5-1.
We need to get in as much information as possible entered correctly. The database you are creating, does lots of clever stuff in the background, which you will become familiar with. Smile

Topic: General Discussion / Skiing

My usual set-up for a day's skiing is: insulin and food and drink in a rucksack, blood test kit in an inside jacket pocket.

In my experience, a rucksack on the back is warm enough not to risk freezing insulin, but too cold for a blood test kit to work. If I didn't have a rucksack, I'd keep my insulin in a (zipped) outside jacket pocket.

I've previously used a 'bum bag' for everything. That worked well - insulin was fine and blood test kit worked.
