Topic: General Discussion / Skiing

Been skiing a few times, its been a bit of trial and error tbh honest. Last time i went I reduced morning and bedtime background by 20% and did same for food at breakfast and lunch. Noy perfect by any imangination but not bad.......biggest problem was the alcohol Confused

Topic: General Discussion / Skiing

Hi,

Never been skiing, but out on the bike in cold weather I have found taking gloves off to do a blood test only to find the meter says too cold is a pain.

I am currently self funding the Freestyle Libre, this is against your skin so I am hoping as it works through clothing it won't have this problem, might be worth looking at as you can scan your arm through ski gear without taking gloves off, just an idea.

Topic: Questions for HCPs / The 2 hour check

I do it just so I can see what my 'journey' is like that day but I'm also very aware that my Novorapid likes to work it's hardest in the 5th hour so I don't correct on it. My post meal spikes can very often be 10-14 which is a concern but it usually returns to normal again before the next meal. It doesn't seem healthy so I'm now trying, where possible, to inject just a little bit earlier before my meal.

Topic: General Discussion / Skiing

Hi everyone,

I am a type 1 diabetic going in my first skiing holiday in February next year. I am looking for some advice on how best to store my insulin and blood glucose monitor whilst skiing. I have used Frio packs before but understand these are only really for keeping insulin warm?

Any other tips on skiing with diabetes appreciated!

Thanks
Sarah.

Topic: General Discussion / Persona Non Grata with Diabetes

All, I was recently asked to publicise this via my Diabetes UK Group but offered to promote it here as well. It's a book written by a T1 about life with T1. It won't give you advice about managing your diabetes, however it will show you that we ALL have the same problems in life as a Diabetic. I am happy to promote anyone who is trying to do something positive about Diabetes. You can find the authors website here:

http://www.pngwd.com/

you can download it from Amazon for the bargain price of £1.49 at the moment here: Persona Non Grata with Diabetes

I have downloaded my copy and have just started reading it. I must say I identify with a lot of what he says already.....

I was told that they only advise pregnant type 1 to do 2 hour checks..if your going to exercise then take some fast acting carbs with you and extra cp depending on what you're doing

Like other have said, exercise is the key, not changed my diet much, but have lost 20kg in about 18 months by cycling, finding an exercise/sport you enjoy makes it easier.

Topic: General Discussion / No QA Insulin with me....

Had some soup for lunch that I had with me, however I still had a 17.1 BGL when I got home from work.
With corrective measures in place, I had it sorted by time I woke the following morning.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Thanks for the tip..... I m getting better as I progress: its the Chinese takeaway which is the biggest challenge! The world wide web is a revelation: never thought I d find CHO values for Krispy Kreme doughnuts for instance, or, before going to Wetherspoons I d be on the computer seeking out meal favourites from the website for dietary info! There are still challenges: working in conjunction with a Dutch company, today got us round the office, very tasty, and luckily small cinnamon biscuits for St Nicholas Eve: had to resist too bigger handful! But overall my life is much improved: just waiting to see what the next Hb1 c brings..... Cool

Had a thought (this is way too late, but might be an idea for the future for others), meat/cheese salad or those health snacks of carrots from Boots etc...

Just as Phil says for me I'm afraid - either Carb free or no food. Or snacks that have either low GI or just a small amount of carbs so that if you're sugar levels do rise then it's not too much or for too long.

Do you have access to food (supermarket or something), get a carb free lunch (not sure what though, tinned tuna/mackerel, eggs, cheese, meat), this might be a good test of how you background works Very Happy

Hardest part is thinking of a carb free lunch! At home I would have an omelette or scrambled eggs or meat and veg, but at work it might be more difficult.

Personally I wouldn't mess with background, not sure what others think?

Topic: Questions for HCPs / No QA Insulin with me....

Hi Matt, probably a bit late now but try to avoid carbs during the day & u might need to correct tonight when u get home & have QA available. Twice daily BI can be helpful in this situation but only if you notice BI running out, not as correction. Perhaps a spare pen in the fridge at work if u have a fridge available? Hope it all works out ok!

Topic: Questions for HCPs / No QA Insulin with me....

Hi all

It seems I have forgotten to refill my QA insulin before I left for work this morning. I now have nothing to cover me for lunch or any snacking during the day. I do have my BI Insulin.
My morning BGL was 7.3, so I know I am currently within or not far from target levels.

The trip home to get it is over an hour and I still have about 5 hours of work to go.

What should I do?

Thanks

Matt

Neville COL, have you seen the Carbs & Cals app?? It's great for eating out as gives you pictures of different sized portions for common foods to help estimate how much you've had, and it will add up the carbs for you as you go along, eg pick your rice portion size, and then curry, and nann etc and it will give you a meal total. I think it costs about £1.50 but it's a small price to pay for something so useful.

Topic: General Discussion / Breaks at work

Hi Greycat regarding your breaks my daughter works in HR and specializes in employment law I have asked her about your position and this is the answer I got anyone working more than 6hours is entitled to a 20min paid break but as you are insulin dependant and have had the condition for over 12 months special rules apply and you should get breaks if required and this is usually every 4 hours hope this info helps I myself don't work anymore but when I did I was always allowed breaks when I needed them I was obviously very fortunate.
